Away Team Setups Made Easy | Star Trek Online

Ойындар

Hello everyone! Ground builds are annoying to many, but having to worry about and optimize your bridge officers in ground combat can be even more annoying. Today's video goes over my personal suggestions so that your bridge officers -- with little effort on your part -- can carry you through any elite-level difficulty story mission in STO.
This is a video serving as a prerequisite to an upcoming video talking about the various battlezones in Star Trek Online, so it was time for me to talk about outfitting your various bridge officers in the game (as some of the battlezones are ground-based, with some of them having bridge officer come along to help you).

    @@Blackinterceptor999 If I recorded this video today, it would actually end up about the same. We have received some new lobi ground items, but it isn't worth the cost for ground officers that have poor weapon AI. There are some cool new ground barbie options for sure, but that doesn't make ground any easier (it already is easy with the stuff in this video). Ground builds for player captains have changed a little with the re-rollable summer event kit frames & new lobi stuff as of late, but unfortunately not for bridge officers. I'll do an update video when something substantive is added for bridge officers in ground combat.

Personally, I don't care, he seems to have very good information which is well-researched, and that's what I'm interested in when I'm looking for information, not a stupid voice and a 10 minute video compressing too much information, or stretching out something simple to hit the golden 601 second mark.

    Also, your active ground doff affects your boffs too. So with my KDF eng, I tend to carry 2 eng boff for the extra mortars the doff will provide. 9 mortars on your enemies are no joke. 2 scie boff for my Scie captain because of the doff that triggers the anomaly for the gravimetric field and with my tac captain I carry 2 tacs for the extra bonuses provided by her active ground doffs. Put the newest Rainbow Tribble that gives 2.5% CritH on you and your bridge officer ground team. It stacks with you and others in your team (captains or bridge officers), so everyone gets a total of 12.5% CritH (2.5% x 5 tribbles) in total. Just about the best tribble in-game besides the Gambling Device from the exchange. The risian kit frame is nice for your captain for budget ground (as noted in the Risian Science Vessel video).

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    Жыл бұрын

    It's overkill on science officers, that already have 3 good heals already available to them. It's ok on engineering officers if you don't have Sabotage from the exchange to train on them. It's probably most worthwhile if you are transforming a tactical officer into a medic, as they don't have any "good" heals inherent in their standard bridge officer abilities. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oX2n0K6Rk7PfdNI.html is the section of the two MW abilities I consider the decent ones. Edit: Don't worry about the upgrade tokens for bridge officers either. These builds still work on elite ground mission content in the game just fine, even 3 years later. It's a little sad that Cryptic is trying to convince players to pay extra money to enhance bridge officers in ground combat, when they are already sufficient on the hardest difficulty.

    I just right click on all the BO abilities so they shoot instead of using abilities. For me it's the horrific delay as the BO shifts between firing and ability use. It's like three seconds wasted to pull off an ability they very often misuse. Disable all abilities and their combat effectiveness increases dramatically. Will try one of your away team set ups because disabling those every time I beam down is a pain and I'd be happy to get rid of that.

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    I'm not necessarily an expert in all of the bridge officer abilities in this game, I've just figured out a couple of them that are strong together and can put on your officers to carry you through missions on elite difficulty if you choose to venture there (that are so good you can leave their equipment at mk 12 VR and it's still fine). There are probably many other combinations to do it as well, as ground combat is fairly easy vs the rest of STO (as players typically don't want to invest as much time there). If Cryptic ever gives us a ground TFO in which we get to bring a bridge officer with us, the STO Reddit forums will talk about this more seriously. The intel ability for an extra decoy isn't that strong unfortunately. It's fine on normal difficulty, but get defeated super quickly on higher difficulties. As for having more men on the battlefield in general, that is only good if those extra men are actually strong & effective (either in damage or durability). In general, the bridge officer basic attack AI is quite bad, so having them have "fool-proof" AoE abilities that hit and control everything (or heal) is the recommended way that I suggest to go. Most of the summon-able allies rely on basic attacks as well to be effective, and with poor AI in that realm I don't typically rely on it.

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    4 жыл бұрын

    It all depends on why you want to get a promo pack starship. Some promo starships are more for the looks, while others are objectively the best starship at the moment for their role. Many non-promo starships are fantastic platforms as well, as basically any T6 starship will work for advanced content in the game (and quite few people play elite content frankly). If you can afford a promo ship, I'd just go for what starship you like the looks of the most. As for pure performance, here are a few popular ones: Torpedo DPS -- Tzenkethi Tzen-tar (nothing is close for pure torpedoes, and torp's are the meta right now in ISE) Sci-Torpedo -- not in promo packs (Legendary Crossfield or Lobi Store Edoulg) Energy DPS -- Vaadwaur Juggernaut for pure performance, FED/KDF MW Flight-Deck Carrier if you want a nicer-looking starship for your energy damage Any other playstyle -- there are starships outside of promo packs that perform equally or better to the ones inside it.

    Not sure what to take away from this as there's a lot of info. It definitely throws the spaceprincess ground build on its head, but I'm still unsure what your "annihilate everything in whatever mode" go-to setup is. Are we to assume the Easy Mode setup 29:47 of 3 sci officers and an engineer is what you've found to be optimum for easily clearing all content? Rewinding back to your equipment recommendations, how have you setup their gear? One Lukari 3 piece on the sci with most heals, one gamma, one Omega and the other Temporal/Competitive 2-piece? Also, which boffs specifically did you use with regards to race/traits? Great video :)

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    5 жыл бұрын

    (1) My go-to setup is typically the "unrestricted" 2 sci, 1 eng, 1 tac setup for the roleplaying reasons of the random banter that bridge officers have in some missions in the game. *ANY* of the setups in this video that aren't the leveling setup can handle elite-level difficulty missions in the game. The Easy 3-science setup is just the one that is never at risk of dying in any of the missions in the game, while the others (especially the 3-tac one) might have times where a bridge officer may go down from time-to-time, but can still finish any combat situation without them all going down. (2) For a standard 2 sci, 1 eng, 1 tac setup, I have the Gamma set on the tac officer, Omega set on the engie officer, Lukari on my "healer" officer, and Temp/Comp 2-piece on the other science officer. On my science captains/healer tanks on my accounts (where I use part of the lukari set on my captain), I change it a little and put the "survivor" set on the healer officer. I wasn't talking about captain ground builds here, so I didn't talk about it. On the 3 sci-officer build, I have the Omega set on the 3rd science/CMD officer but keep the general setup otherwise the same. (3) Previously on the channel I did a video going over my personal rankings on the best bridge officer traits [also a ranked list of the captain races based on it]. The absolute best traits are in the A-tier list, specifically Veteran and the traits that enhance kit modules (Creativity, Flux, Stasis Specialist & Telekinetic). The end of the video goes over some suggested bridge officers available in-game, assuming a 2 sci, 1 eng, 1 tac setup. TL;DW notes for the ground part of that video is ground below: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fnZpmbZrc7Cqeaw.html (3a) If you spend money on bridge officers, make sure they have Superior Creativity available on them (or you are going for a theme build). It is the most widely-available strong trait in the game for bridge officers. (3b) Tactical -- Sarish Minna & Kira Nerys are the absolute best tactical officers by far in the game. Sarish can be found off the exchange for around 600k EC typically (as many don't realize how OP she actually is), though Kira needs a STLV 2018 code to access. They have the same traits. Veteran + Superior Creativity is a potent trait combo. (3c) Science -- Fleet VR Romulan Science Officers are the best reliable science officers for ground in the game, with both Superior Creativity & Superior Stasis Specialist guaranteed on them. Fleet Krenim officers can RNG into slightly better healer sci officers if you can RNG Superior Creativity on its already guaranteed Flux trait (it isn't guaranteed like to STO Wiki claims, which is sad). Self-rez officers are nice as well here, like Nelen Exil & 0178. For a cheap option, one of the alien science officer options from the KDF First City's officer vender has Creative & Telekinetic for just 200 dilithium each -- making them the best reliable science option outside of the fleet. (3d) Engineering -- there isn't anything really clear-cut for the most effective here. My last suggested combo in that video had the lifetime engie officer just by trait numbers, though it is as effective as other engies that have Superior Creativity available. Technically a fleet Krenim engie officer is stronger with Superior Creativity & Flux, but again your have to RNG it.

    @@CounterYoloGaming This is an excellent layout of equipment and ability choices. I must admit, I too tended to default to the recommendations of the spaceprincess ground build, but, as you say, that guide was formulated a long time ago. The game has moved on, with new boffs, new equipment sets and new specializations available. While I use Seismic on my sci captain for the reasons you have stated, it never occurred to me to use it on my sci boffs for the cc value. Engineering boff: again I did slot a mortar, usually quantum II and mixed it up with Support Drone II as needed, but never considered a Photon in the ensign slot, for those pesky stuck in the wall mobs especially. Sabotage is a great ability, don't know why I haven't used it sooner. The race and trait combinations are spot on. I'm lucky enough to have Kira and actually use her already, but never considered a Krenim Sci. I have two already, both of whom I lucked out with and have Superior Creativity. I'm also a lifer and actually use the engie android already. I think a few people watching this video will be re-thinking their ground builds. I know I will :) Thanks for taking the time to do this.

    hey what do you do with sabotage 2 and cold fusion flash 3 because they are hard to find on the exchange

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the exchange supply of these abilities (on the PC version at least) has dwindled quite a bit since this video went up for some reason... TL;DR of these abilities -- they are designed to stop enemies from attacking at all. If you can't use abilities like these, I would suggest going for abilities that lower the damage output of enemies or additional healing to withstand that damage from enemies. Sabotage is extremely strong for engineers to disable enemy ranged weapons in an AoE fashion (so they can be silly and go after the wrong person and still affect who you need them to in a fight). Higher ranks in Sabotage increases the duration of the weapon disable, and on elite difficulty Sabotage 2 is more than sufficient in duration in my testing (sabotage 1 or 3 is still fine as well). When you combine Sabotage with other AoE abilities from your officers (like Cold Fusion Flash, Seismic Agitation Field, Paradox Bomb, and/or Frictionless Particle Grenade) that stop them from engaging in melee with you -- most enemies can't really do that much against you. There are enemies that still have ranged abilities independent of weapons, but it is still strong vs most enemies in-game. Cold Fusion Flash can be easily replaced with something else, though Sabotage isn't as easily replaced honestly -- as Weapon Malfunction for officers isn't quite in the same realm of effectiveness. Without Sabotage, I go for things like Chronometric Diffusion to lower the damage output of enemies -- which is why you see this in my version without lockbox abilities.

It's between 300-700 each for your officers (depending on rank) and 1,000 each for your captain kit module option . The captain ones are bound-to-character on pickup (so make sure to buy it with the captain you will use it on), while the bridge officer ones are trade-able until used. As for earning EC, search KZread or Reddit for "STO Tour of the Galaxy." That daily mission is how many of us in STO that don't buy master keys & promo packs make EC in the game. How do you train the skills onto your Officer. I picked up all the training manuals but I can't seem to train any of my officers in that skill.

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    4 жыл бұрын

    (1) Your officers need to be of the rank of the ability or higher to use a particular skill. For instance, to train Medical Tricorder 2 on a science officer in the Lieutenant ability slot, they need to be promoted to Lieutenant to be able to be trained in it. I would suggest checking and making sure all of your officers that you will use for ground combat are trained up to maximum rank to not run into that issue. (*) You also need some experience to use to train them, so also check to see that you aren't running out of experience. If you are lower than level 40, you might have run out of experience to train them. If you are lower than level 30, you won't be able to train them in all of the higher-level officer abilities. Not to worry though; the game doesn't start spiking in difficulty until level 30 -- so you should be able to manage if this is your situation. (2) If you are wanting to use the specialist abilities (like Command, Intel, or Temporal), you need to not only train your officers up to their maximum rank, but also need to use an appropriate training specialist qualification to give them the ability to see and train in those specialist abilities. (3) If you are still running into issues, you might be trying to train at Starfleet Academy or on/orbiting Earth Spacedock. There is an error that I run into occasionally that doesn't allow me to train my officers there after buying training manuals & specialist manuals from the exchange. In that situation, (after verifying steps 1 & 2 here), I go to Deep Space Nine and I can train them there. Let me know if these helped solve your issues.

    The TOS weapons aren't craftable, but they are available in a few locations: (1) The cheapest option is playing the missions "Everything Old is New" from the Skirmish mission arc. The TOS beam array from that mission has the same visuals as Twin Phaser Beam Arrays (they might have even changed the name recently, but I'm not in game currently to confirm this). This mission arc isn't in the regular mission journal anymore, but is still available in the mission replay section. (2) A non-grindy option is to just buy the TOS Connie from the C-Store for 500 Zen. It gives you 2 Twin Phaser Beam Arrays, but you can pull off its weapons, and dismiss/reacquire the ship as many times as you need. to get the amount of beam arrays you need for your build. (3) Another option to acquire them are on the TOS ESD (23c FED captains prior to going to modern STO), as well as from your fleet's K-13 fleet holding if you holding is high enough to use fleet credits & dilithium to acquire them. (4) The only option to get the weapons to be transferable across characters on your account is to acquire them via lockboxes (or the exchange). The most expensive option to be sure though.

    It is for bridge officers (I have different videos for captain ground builds). If you want a much cheaper option that is accessible earlier than mission & reputations, go with the Sompek Shield & Sompek Blast Assault. It is unlockable for you entire account through just using an uncommon & rare Phoenix Pack token to get them -- and then can be claimed for free for all of your officers through the Event ground reclaim section. sto.gamepedia.com/Sompek_Arena_Warrior

    It's too bad the foundry system got taken away because it was a great, honest way to gauge one's aweigh team because there aren't any ground battlezones(yet)that aren't nerfed down to certain levels i.e. Nimbus III at level 23, Voth Spire BZ, Kobali Prime BZ at their levels restrictions and aweigh team number. We need a BZ with no level restrictions to approximate the old unlimited foundry sets with full aweigh team.

    Glad you enjoyed it! I'm not really considering making a new video at the moment, as my suggestions still work in 2024 STO for ground combat on elite difficulty; you don't need to get kit frames for bridge officers (via elite bridge officer upgrade so they can use them, which is just a cash grab & waste of in-game currency honestly) nor upgrading to mk 15 weaponry for bridge officers, as their AI is still bad for using them. I technically could do an update video for ground captain builds -- as that has changed a bit with more power options for them the past few years -- but others in the STO scene have covered that quite well honestly.

    If you are wanting dps from your away team, focusing on kit performance & kit readiness + their good AoE damaging abilities is the way to go. Focusing in crit is great for your captain if you want to be weapon-based (as you control him/her at all times), but is really bad for bridge officers -- as their weapon AI in ground combat is still really bad. An update could be made for the current meta suggestions for captains in ground combat, but the suggestions for your away team remain the same as it was back when this video was made a few years ago.

    Ground combat is a different beast entirely from space combat; in ground, it is like you and your 4 bridge officers are all separate & work independently, while in space you are all together as one entity. For space, it is all part of your starship build, so there isn't one generalized layout, as it depends on the specific starship you are using and the playstyle you are going for. I can give my general guidelines on what I look for for bridge officer ability options for tanking in the upcoming Best Tanks 2021 video, but it really just depends on the starship & your playstyle.

    Ok, gotcha -- you are doing a DEW-Sci build. In your case & preferences, the Fleet Nautilus would probably be the best choice for an upgrade to use temporal powers (or the Lukari Dranuur Scout Ship if you have a Tier 5 colony -- though it isn't a full-spec temporal ship). I'm not a dps captain, but here's my suggestions for the fleet nautilus as a dew-sci platform to get started: Cmdr Sci/TO Cmdr -- Gravity Well 3 [Tyken's Rift conflicts with Gravity well for cooldowns; with gravity well at global, using tyken's rifts delays usage of your next gravity well] LtCmdr -- Timeline Collapse 1 (entropy consumer, the best dps option from temporal & synergizes with gravity well) Lt -- Chronometric Inversion Field 1 (entropy builder that helps you survive a little easier) Ens -- [bridge officer ability of choice to proc secondary deflector, depends on your secondary deflector] LtCmdr Uni (Sci) LtCmdr -- Very Cold in Space 3 Lt -- Photonic Officer 1 -- alongside using the Arrest trait (earnable from 15 pts in constable specialization) or Improved Photonic Officer trait (not free) mostly covers your cooldowns; use PO2 & flip with very cold in space if you want things completely at global. Ens -- Subspace Vortex 1 LtCmdr Tac LtCmdr -- Beam Overload 3 (since you are broadsiding with beams, this should be at max rank; traditional sci-torp builds will have torpedo spread 3 or torpedo high yield 3 here) Lt -- Cannon Scatter Volley 1 or Attack Pattern Beta 1 Ens -- Torpedo Spread 1 (this would be Beam overload 1 on a traditional sci-torp ship with the morphogenic set) Lt Eng/TO Lt -- Emergency Power to Weapons 2 or TO entropy builder of choice (see the STO wiki if you want to read up on options: sto.fandom.com/wiki/Bridge_officer_and_kit_abilities) Ens -- Emergency Power to Auxiliary 1 Ens Tac Ens -- Tactical Team 1 (tactical team is always nice to have for survival ; if you have a good tank you trust, you can replace this with some other filler for more dmg) If you have access to the Lukari Dranuur Scout Ship, you can just copy from the dps league on suggested bridge officer abilities (granted, it is a little old -- modifying a little to get more dew-based enhancements in your build): www.sto-league.com/science-ships-in-the-current-century/

    @@Ken19700 To be honest, I didn't realize there was a level 3 of that ability when I made the video. I have been able able to have my bridge officers carry my weaker captains on elite missions just fine without the more powerful version without difficulty; if you can afford medical generator 3 or want to craft it yourself, then by all means use that instead. Medical Generator 2 can be obtained from the bridge officer trainer, so it is super cheap.

  • @CounterYoloGaming

    @CounterYoloGaming

    5 жыл бұрын

    As I have alluded to in other videos, there is no raw "tanking" in PvP; what you have instead is a tank/healer hybrid. When you build tanky enough for PvP, enemy players learn they can't kill you (and end up ignoring you and focusing your teammates instead); when that happens, you put all of your survival abilities & clickies on others to keep them alive. As I haven't been active in competitive PvP in over a year, I would have to go theoretical talk on the channel for the build for it to even being close to competitive in today's STO. If you think that would be desirable, I am happy to give a few theoretical example builds for that -- but cannot guarantee how effective in practice it would actually be.

    This setup is decent against most normal enemies in-game that rely on weapons; however, against enemies that rely more on their raw innate abilities and kit modules (NPC equivalents here) than on their weapons [or even lack weapons], that ground setup won't be quite as effective against and can run into some issues on elite content. Still should be workable on all non-elite content. I typically don't recommend the Herald staff to players for their ground away teams as lobi is a bit too valuable/expensive for most players to use them on their bridge officers (instead probably should be for equipment for their starship or their captain to get the most mileage out of the purchase).

    works for me ; ) I have done everything in game on advanced using this method, if you mean setting to elite on missions or tfo's, then I can't say as I don't do elite, it's kinda silly...I should add that my engineers all use paradox bombs and mortars and turrets. I should add that I can play all ground content just with my captain, so away teams are not really needed ( level 15 gold everything : )

    @@dilsnikdilznik Yep, elite difficulty for missions and TFO's is a little silly -- as there aren't any real incentives to do so in the game. I tested the ground setups of bridge officers for this video in a few of the toughest ground missions on elite difficulty to ensure they work: if they can work brainlessly there in those circumstances, they should work for anyone just about anywhere else. Edit: these were testing with my captains just running around doing nothing -- the setups of the bridge officers & abilities are meant and designed for your captain to do literally nothing (and officers with mk 12 VR set items, as received from reputations or endgame missions). With a proper captain setup for elite TFO's, I completely agree that bridge officers in story missions are unnecessary -- even at elite difficulty [just a little more time-consuming].
