"Thank you for waking me, Einar" The many meanings of Waking up Thorfin - physically, emotional and mentally Mama Einar teaching his little baby Thorfin how to live in the world. Also, that sequence in Thorfin's dream right before the old lady from hi past shows up is the same exact sequence from when Thorfin stormed the wall in Normandy to take the captains head

I love seeing Torfinn slowly start to get more emotional, start thinking about things he hadn't thought about before. It's really cool.

We have a lot of emotional attachment to Thorfinn but it's good when the author reminds us how he was for a long time like a plague that left only death and destruction in its wake. We know he went through a lot of difficulties but for those who were murdered, that doesn't change anything.

The man behind all the best storyboards (and by extension best episodes) this season is Atsushi Koboyashi. His storyboards are so deliberate, powerful, and emotional. Every episode he touches is destined to become a masterpiece. This season, he had a hand in episodes 4, 9, 17, and 23. I can't get enough of his creations and I hope he returns to work on future episodes!

I don't think Einar is saying Thorfinn was spoiled but rather that Thorfinn is acting in a spoiled manner in not recognizing the sacrifices made by others to keep him alive. Einar's father died so his family could live, then in a way, his sister did too, trying to get the vikings to release them both. He's not going to let their massive sacrifices go to waste by letting someone end his life. Thorfinn on the other hand, while Einar likely knows little about Thorfinn's backstory, is willing to give up his life just like that because he doesn't care about it anymore. Einar likely felt that Thorfinn was likely just giving up his life without a fight for no reason because he felt that what was happening wasn't right, in a way by not caring that much about what happens to himself Thorfinn, in Einar's mind, is being selfish by not caring about what others gave to get Thorfinn to that point alive.

In my opinion, one of the themes portrayed with absolute precision in the Vinland Saga (especially Season 2) is the warrior's atonement for murder. Death is a mysterious phenomenon, whether one dies naturally or is killed for no reason, one must experience the trauma of death. This phenomenon sometimes gets so severe, that one would get nightmare, and in extreme case, PTSD.

This is my favorite episode in Vinland Saga S2. It tends to get overshadowed by a few of the later eps, particularly 2x9 and 2x23 (and don’t get me wrong, those are also fantastic in their own right) but THIS episode woke something in me as well. I felt thematically there were so many moments that gracefully foreshadowed a monumental change in Thorfinn’s character arc, and it also had a cinematic flair that deeply appealed to my tastes. The musical score near the end with the choir when Canute is revealed is just… it’s my favorite in the whole series (the track name is called “Itself” if you’re curious to listen to it in its entirety, I promise you won’t regret it). I would even venture so far as to say this is one of the greatest anime episodes ever written. I wish I could erase my memory and watch it again for the first time.

"this is one of the greatest anime episodes ever written" I think undersells Vinland Saga. This episode and episode 9 and 23 (I'd also add the Arnheid story conclusion episodes) that you mentioned are some of the best written TV, period. Anime or live action. Elite story telling. This is the best season of any show I have ever watched.

@@maizeman90 I wouldn’t go so far as to say it is hands down the greatest season ever. It might be to you personally but the general consensus doesn’t indicate that, especially when shows like The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, True Detective etc. have near perfect seasons. However, I do agree that Vinland Saga as a show overall has some of the best writing I’ve witnessed in a series, anime or otherwise.

Every time I rewatch this or see reactions to it, I can feel my eyes start to well up. This story is so beautiful, I love the characters and the growth they go through. I usually hate most anime but this is a story I’d love to see HBO do a live action of. And lastly, the OST is magnificent throughout, it really captures the mood and the emotional impact of what the characters are feeling. I can’t help but cry when I watch this. I hope that you love this season as much as I do.

Einar meant that compared to many many people who are just straight up killed at their world, Thorfinn and Einar were lucky enough that people kept them alive. Even though they ended up suffering in different way and becoming slaves. Einar sees this lucky because he remembers his mothers words.

Einar is a great contrast to Thorfinn and just another example of how good the writing is. He too has that rage in him just as Thorfinn had, but Einar was an adult when it happened. He can remember a good life, good people, and the sacrifices they made for him. So he knows letting that rage consume him would be the worst thing he could do. Thorfinn, as a child, never had the self-awareness or experiences behind him to make that choice. I think it's a big part of why Einar is so well suited to helping Thorfinn, even if neither of them really knows why.

@@certifiedboylover8829 I wouldn't call him a war criminal...... He was more of a child soldier. He was only 6 years old when he started all this. A war criminal is what Askeladd made him. His motive for killing was revenge, but it was actually more about survival than anything else. If he couldn't make himself useful to Askeladd, he would be abandoned, sold into slavery, or even killed.

@@Camellia_1999 askeladd never made thorfinn a a war criminal. everything thorfinn committed was his decision since he had the choice to just go back to iceland since askeladd swore that he wouldn’t harm anyone on the boat in season 1. Yukimura sensei made it very clear that thorfinns actions were all his choices to make and acted out in revenge. Literally at the age of 6, he was committed war crime after war crime😭😭 (not hating btw thorfinn is my favorite mc)

  • @-Zikade-

    @-Zikade-

@@Camellia_1999 Don't belittle Thorfinn's guilt. Thorfinn was driven by his own rage and hunger for revenge. Askeladd might have been a catalyst and an enabler who used that rage but he never forced Thorfinn. He didn't kidnap the kid nor did he ever say stuff like "Go to war or I'll do something that hurts you" (a.k.a actual blackmail). Thorfinn himself made the choice to follow him and kept following him out of his own free will, even when explicitly given chances not to. Even while being fully aware he left his mother & sister behind and that Thors would not approve. In fact his journey was full of choices because his interactions with Askeladd basically went "Hey, go do this thing will you?" "Nope." "I'll duel you after." "I'm already on my way!" Askeladd understood how Thorfinn's mind worked, how he was a slave to his need for revenge, and thus he dangled those duels like treats. He wasn't keeping Thorfinn on a leash, forcefully dragging him to war, Thorfinn leashed HIMSELF to Askeladd caring for nothing else except his revenge. Askeladd had no issues to use this for his own goals but at the end of the season he voiced his disappointment at Thorfinn's development, or more accurately: the lack of it. He never seemed to learn anything and just mindlessly chased after those treats. So yeah, while Askeladd had a role in sending him down that violent rabbithole (and then later pulling him out of it) Thorfinn wasn't forced. He wasn't unaware of other paths. Even his own mind (visions of Thors) was telling him otherwise, yet he ignored it. And this is why his guilt runs so very deep and why this season hits so hard. It'd be downright offensive to him if someone was like: "Not your fault. You had no choice. You were just surviving." No he wasn't and he himself knows this very well.

Spoiled in the sense that he has the opportunity to be alive regardless of his circumstances. Yes, being a slave wouldn’t be great but it is reminder that both of them are slaves who have the opportunity to free themselves. This is a lesson for us that regardless of our circumstances we are truly blessed and spoiled for the fact that we are alive. Being alive is something we don’t appreciate enough, as many take for granted being alive.
