Avro Vulcan HOWL during taxi and engine run from cockpit, underneath and front - March 2023

Hear the Bristol Siddeley Olympus 200-series turbojets howl! Welcome to XH558 who is operated by the Vulcan of the Sky trust! Here she is doing an engine run including the famous howl, operating the air brakes and lighting. Filmed from the outside, underneath and in the cockpit in March 2023 at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Thanks for watching everyone! These aircraft are incredibly expensive to maintain so if you can, please consider donating to help support the trust: vulcantothesky.org/donate/ And my detailed tour video is coming so make sure you are subscribed. I'm filming at Duxford, Tolour and Speyer so it might be a bit of a wait, though. :)

Thanks so much for posting this, Paul. In 1965 and 1966, I was a student at Wilmslow County Grammar School (now Wilmslow High School) in Wilmslow, Cheshire. There was a British Air Force base somewhere near Wilmslow, and I well remember the first time I saw an Avro Vulcan roaring through a turn just to the east of the school. While the other boys went about their usual outdoor school activities, I stood there motionless, gazing up in wonder at the magnificent Vulcan. With a brother-in-law who'd been in the US Air Force and a father who flew all over the world in his work, I'd seen and flown on innumerable military and civilian aircraft, but I'd never before seen anything like the Vulcan. To me, it was inconceivable that a delta-wing airplane could be so large yet so graceful. Your video is the next best thing to experiencing one in person.

Thank you for the inside scoop. I've been a fan and had the privilege of watching a departure close up at Aviano AB in 1982. I was working EOR (end of runway, we were the crew chiefs that pulled the last couple of safety pins just prior to departure for live range fire) and was some 100 meters away during its departure from the Brit area of the base. Something I'll never forget. It was also one of those moments, owing to its size, it looked as if it would fall out of the sky. When compared to our F4d's (Torrejon AB "TJ") and the Italian and German F 104's.

Thanks for uploading this video Paul. I live about 3 miles from where the Vulcan was made (and many other iconic aircraft). This is now, sadly closed, and is becoming a large housing estate. There is however the Avro museum, with an example of the cockpit and a full plane in the outside area. Unfortunately you can’t go in the main exhibit. In the 60s I lived near to a military airfield where they were sometimes based so they were a regular sight. Iconic design and brilliant to see in flight. Hopefully they may get this one flying again in the future. Guy Martin did a great documentary on a restoration of this Vulcan some years ago in preparation for its final UK flight.

Across the pond, here in the US, it’s easy to see why the Vulcan is loved. This is a beautiful aircraft. While I am sure it’s very expensive to keep an airplane of this type flying, how unfortunate that all Vulcans have been retired. Seems to me if some Spitfires and Lancasters are still flying, why not a Vulcan? Circa 2003 I attended an air show featuring US WW II planes. The one which really caught my attention was the B-29, as it was much larger than any warbird there. I asked the pilot how much did it cost to operate “Fifi.” He said probably about $5,000 per hour. The cost has probably tripled since then. Seeing “Fifi” airborne is an unbelievable experience.

Thanks for uploading the video, this aircraft should still be flying. As an ex RAF dog handler based at RAF SCampton & Waddington during the Vulcans stationed there I have very fond memories of these fantastic aircraft, it was so sad to see them broken up at Scampton. I grew up below Waddington when the planes were painted white, loved the sound as they took off.

it would have still been flying for another 3 years right now if it wasnt for bae systems and rolls royce no longer wanting to certify the required maintenance on the engines etc due to liability if anything was to go wrong it was politics that grounded 558 it still had another 8-10 years on the airframe left so no it defo wont fly again as it will never be given another airworthy certificate cause of bae systems and rolls no longer willing to support it. i miss xh558 last year i decided that would be my last big airshow a eurofighter typhoon is like watching paint dry compared to this beauty 😢.
