The part of this review that spoke to me the most is how Avril's image is actually quite different than what most of her first album sounds like, and in fact that's why I love Let Go so much, it is a genuinely good album, and if it wasn't for that variety it wouldn't be half as good as it is. Don't get me wrong, I love Sk8er Boi as much as the next person, but you never hear anyone talking about Mobile, Tomorrow, Anything But Ordinary, Things I'll Never Say, etc. All those songs, along with the better known classics like Sk8er Boi and I'm With You, etc, are what makes Let Go such an enjoyable listen to me, even after all these years. And sadly, it's like you said, this new album feels like forcing something that isn't even what genuinely made that first record so good to begin with.

This album feels like Travis Barker and his ghostwriter bois cashing in on the pop punk revival once again but using Avril as the poster girl this time. That being said, It definitely is a fun listen and I'm happy Avril's back. Tbh now that trap has faded away I wouldn't mind pop punk being the next generic radio wave.

You saying Avril Lavigne or ALL women in rock for that matter can't do anything themselves like write songs so it takes a man to make a woman become successful? What a backwards conservative mind set you have, your attitude towards women would fit right in with the Taliban. Avril was successful in pop punk before she ever met Travis Barker and too many she is the face of 2000's pop punk.

There’s that stupid buzzword I keep seeing everywhere again: “cashing in”. This album isn’t perfect, but it isn’t “cashing in” on anything! This whole new wave pop punk thing is just a trend in alt/rock music right now that a bunch of artists are thinking is cool. @Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me I mean that's not even an unfair opinion but I still come back to that album regularly and still love it so it hasn't aged worse than *I* remember haha. For me the non-singles still hold up. As soon as I hear Unwanted I'm instantly into the groove of the song, I think Naked is a great album closer, and even My World is a bit goofy but it's a great and authentic bit of goofy. You've definitely got me on Nobody's Fool though, that song is hilariously bad. For me personally the album still contains a captivating charm all the way through and think the songwriting is way better than most of the other music in that same space, on par with early Kelly Clarkson (though Avril helped there too).

@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me Hahaha gotta be honest I never expected Flyleaf to come up in a Fantano comments section, u rite though Paramore was and still is quality. I still disagree with your assessment of Breakaway and Let Go as just vessels for singles, I just finished relistening to Let Go and I still love the journey of the album and Breakaway is all winners outside of the bonus tracks. Both artists with great singles fer sher but I would categorize them as album artists still (even if their later output fell off).

I absolutely love Avril and her music (even stuff from her last few albums), but I am kind of disappointed in the album. There are a bunch of songs that I enjoy, but it just doesn't feel authentic in the same way that her old music did. It just feels too much like she is giving into the Barker/MGK sound that seems to plague any popular pop punk music that we hear nowadays. It obviously wouldn't exactly work to write in the exact same way that she did on her first few albums, but I just wish that she would've stayed more true to her own brand and style of pop punk and singer-songwriter stuff that she used to do. It's still like a strong 6/10 for me, but I think she could've made a much more interesting and meaningful return to this style of music than she did.

I feel exact the same way. I love her first two albums. even though she was so young, there's something so insightful and wise in the lyrics, the way she articulated her experiences with love and heartbreak. It seems to me like a lot of people think that pop punk is inherently immature (and, admittedly, a lot of it is) but to me this new album doesn't seem like her trying to go back to her roots, it's more like a facade, shallow, cheap and inauthentic. I really look up to young Avril because she did a great job of putting how I felt into words but the way she sings about "love" now is something I'd never want for myself. maybe she has been in too many unhealthy toxic relationships and that has warped her perception and made her think genuine and healthy love doesn't exist, and if that's the case that makes me really sad for her... I understand this new album is supposed to have a more lighthearted and playful tone but honestly just not for me. Watching her recent interviews she seems off to me, I don't remember her ever having spoken so childlike. She looks like she's wearing a costume. Maybe she just needs new songwriters lol

She was stuck at home for a few years, being sick, and when she came back, she released a lame, grown-ups album Head above water, which seriously doesn't fit her, but this album is fun, brings me back to my teenage times. Yes, the lyrics are silly, but we need songs like those too :) and Analanche is quite depressing, on the contrary. Avril is kind of on and off for me. The first album shows maturity and promise, two things which continued on Under My Skin. From there, it's pretty much downhill, since she leans harder and harder into the immature 'pop-punk princess' vibe which becomes ever more inauthentic with time. I have a soft spot for Goodbye Lullaby, which is for the most part a solid and more reflective effort. The self-titled album is okay in places and utter trash in others. On Head Above Water, she doesn't even sound like herself, putting on a generic voice that I assume was popular at the time... and then there's this new one, which is honestly almost unlistenable. She doesn't need autotune yet the whole thing is drowned in it. The message is insincere and desperate; at 37, she should be way past this phase now. And the features are just dire. Love Sux reminds me a lot of Limp Bizkit's last album, not only in the title (Still Sucks), but also the way both bands have gone all-in on a perceived idea of what their band is 'supposed' to sound like, rather than just... you know... making good music. As a fan of her early work, this LP is embarrassing. 4/10 is generous.

yes, the songs felt very paint by numbers. Her early work was very soulful and sonically well constructed. The lyrics are bratty and immature, which is a little weird coming from a grown adult woman. I am forever obsessed with her early work, but this album is not it. It's a shame because her voice did sound amazing on Luv Sux. Just the concepts and songs are very commercialized and tacky.

I was so excited for this album. I was a huge Avril fan during her first two albums (Let Go, and Under My Skin) with Under My Skin being my absolute favorite. I think she does alternative rock amazingly well. Her "pop punk" songs are Ok, but not at the top for me. More recently, I really loved the song "Burn" that she did with Mod Sun. Before Love Sucks was released, Avril said in an interview that this was going to be her most alternative album ever, from front-to-back, so I was like FUCK YEAH! Unfortunately, by "alternative" she meant "pop-punk." I don't hate the album; I think it's fun, and I really like Bite Me and a few other songs, but I'm underwhelmed overall. The lyrics are especially juvenile, which they always sort of have been, but I guess I was expecting them to be a bit deeper now that she's in her 30's. Oh well, at least I can love her style and just be glad that she's doing rock music again, and not whatever she was doing during her last album.

I went to high school in southern Ontario when Avril started popping off, which meant that every once in a while, we'd be at a party with someone who went to school with her. Not once have I ever heard any of them say ANYthing nice about her. Unrelated, Sucktano is what people are gonna start calling him when they strongly disagree
