Short explanation She was supposed to be a country singer, I think. She was offered to record in NY She didn't want to do that, went back to Canada and then went to LA in 2000. Somewhere during that time LA reid gave her the chance to write her own stuff.

She was originally signed as a folk/country artist. The label wanted her to sing a bunch of folk songs written by other artists, but she didn't want to do that. They had paired her with a bunch of folk producers but she wanted to record songs she'd written that were more guitar-heavy, and the label was on the verge of dropping her because they couldn't figure out what to do with her. This song was released on her promo album in 2001, but you can tell from the sound that this was probably recorded during the 2000-2001 era where she was trying to transition away from the folksy sound the label had originally wanted her to sing.
