Been ages since I even listened to any metal these days. When i heard AVOW it sucked me right into it. True masterpiece. The opening track is just mind-bending with those Shepard tone style riffs.. Really something from another world.

Solid review man. I finally pulled my finger out and got these two albums this week and played them back to back in a dark room with headphones on to fully immerse myself in them. And if you've got the time I highly recommend doing exactly that cos they are f*cking amazing!!

Personally I thought that these albums were pretty okay, there's some interesting things to be found on both projects but overall I just found them to be very repetitive and bordering on monotonous. Great review as always

I am a Death Metal session guitarist. And I can play this easily (you need a 9 sting to do it). Great review and I would agree with your score. It was a disappointment. You did not talk about the vocals. (He had the feedback that he needed to be more visceral). And guess what - He did it.

Why not just tune down a 7 string? 9 strings I just don't see them being useful and I play in Standard an octive down with a 6 string Jackson v with emg81.

So, this band comes from the land down under. Whether that be Australia or Hell is up for you to decide, but I'm leaning towards the latter. With the Halloween season upon us, I figured I would dive into one of metal's most frightening bands of the modern era, Portal. An avant-garde death metal band with members whose identities are completely ambiguous, they've garnered the attention of the likes of Pitchfork (sadly) and even The New York Times due to their terrifying brew of extreme music. It's not for everyone, but I've enjoyed all their output up to this point. Swarth, Vexovoid, and Ion in particular are fantastic dissonant records in my book. Both of these stand as the weakest in their discography for me. Avow, while definitely not without its moments, felt very par for the course for the band and repetitive. Hagbulbia has that problem worse so, even more since dark ambient tends to make me very distracted more often than not. Interesting as an experiment for sure, but unfortunately they don't do a hell of a lot for me, especially considering it feels like I've heard them do these many times before, and much better. Avow: 3/5 Hagbulbia: 2.5/5

These are my least favorite Portal albums. They are not bad at all though. There is no bad Portal album. But Avow just takes some time to grow on you. And it sure has for me quite a bit but yeah I do agree that it’s majorly bloated. 3.5/5. Hagbulbia is haunting for sure but WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE 80 GODDAMN MINUTES!!!!!You could have cut off atleast 20 minutes and the record would lose nothing. It does have its moments that are genuinely haunting but it does get tiresome halfway through the album 3/5. I definitely was a little disappointed since Portal from Swarth-Ion saw them making some of my favorite death Metal ever. But still these are objectively decent albums who knows it might really grow on me. Anyway Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

No way!! I only heard Avow and it's super boring! Yes there is atmosphere, buzzing guitars, fast drums but none of it adds up to a coherent song. Like, what is the point of all this? All the songs sound the same, not one differentiating riff, and the production is trash. There is no a-ha moment that makes you understand what the song is about. So, why is this band good? What should I be paying attention to when I listen to them?

This is a cliche answer, but its truth: Portal is one of those bands you either love or hate. For a long I didnt really even care about them myself until I heard "Ion" and then everything clicked for me.

Their music is more liken to a horror soundscape that dips and weaves kind of like an avante garde cinematic movie score... but for a lynchian surreal horror flick. It's mean to have a droning unnerving gut wrenching effect. It's meant to suck you in and immerse you with nauseating tones and phrasings. So it sounds like it's just not your thing. A-ha moments are so cliche. The A-ha moment is the entirety of the experience.
