Avoiding Fast Jets in Wales | Gamston to Caernarfon Flight Vlog
In this video I'm joined by my son Sam as we take the Piper Arrow for a beautiful flight from Gamston across to Caernarfon in North Wales. The approach to Caernarfon is stunning, as you fly low along the Menai Strait to avoid fast jets training from nearby RAF Valley.

Awe, Sam is just adoreable. I love him and I love the relatonship you two have 🤗
Noel I flew with my father on Viscounts in Scotland and the last time I did it was from Dunsfold to St Athan in a P.A44 in September 93 always enjoyed it ,I am sure Sam gets a thrill every time he flies with you and it is something he will always remember I know I do .
Enjoyed the flight with you, your son is very well behaved and didn’t distract as much as I thought he would.

Haha thanks Mark, he's pretty good and will sit quiet when he can sense I'm busy.
Definitely some beautiful scenery in North Wales! Thanks for sharing the trip as always! ✈️
Been watching your Videos for couple years now Noel, Big fan of your work! Its great to see you pave the way for the next generation of pilots. Great stuff, keep up the great work!
Love flying into Caernarfon! Beautiful approaches 😍

As someone from Nottingham its great to see local facilities in use!
I was so engrossed in this video, was such a shame that it ended. Really relaxing and nice to watch you and Sam together.
I certainly enjoyed this vlog with you and Sam. He's a cutie and I love ypur interaction. He certainly looks up to you as his role model Thanks for sharing.
You guys are adorable together!
That truly is a father and a son bonding time flying together
So nice to see some very well produced UK flying, not a lot to find really. Great flying :)

The drive from Birmingham to Caernarfon is beautiful too. Our favourite castle to go to when we visit family in the UK is Caernarfon Castle. Might have to fly next time
Great video Noel and Sam 🏴🇬🇧
Great video Noel Sam is A adorable aviator he is top class
Excellent video - used to stop off there for breakfast bacon rolls in the '90s !
"Next time I'll try not to take the roofs off all the caravans on landing" Great video, thank you.
Enjoyable indeed Neil - thanks. Visited Valley many times in our Gnats (if you remember me from previous posts on your videos) We went just a tad faster ! Ha! Good Stuff !
It's so cool watching you fly and your son enjoying it and wanting to be a pilot be insane in the next ten years if he wants to fly Boeing 737s or another and you get on the flight and Sams the pilot
great video noel
Great video
Sam(erick) is so lovely! He makes a great FO.
Great video! You must of passed right over me in Rhostyllen, Wrexham from the look of the map! Hawarden also have a great cafe (Chocks Away) by the way and quite a bit of GA going on if you even drop in there!!
Wow , Caernarfon Airport I go to Caernarfon all the time on holiday , North Wales has a beautiful coastline , Especially by the Menai
Hey Noel you have a good kid.

We do manage to hit it occasionally, but now he's nearly a teenager the cute button is slowly becoming more inoperable!
As if you flew over my home city of Stoke on Trent. You're attempt at a Welsh accent made me chuckle
Some very good childhood memories of visiting Fort Belan, which is very close to the airport. Great trip. I wonder if it’s “too late” to learn to fly.

It's never too late! Often see older PPLs, I think the record at Gamston is someone in their late 70s!
Wonderful flight...never seen this part of the UK, beautiful...so nice to take your son!
Wow watched you for ages and somehow I missed that you are a pilot too... Who'd a funk it 😎
Didn't realise you flew from Gamston! I'm currently training for my PPL there
You can fly in to Hawarden. Nice cafeteria there. Called chocks away.
Awesome
Hello sam and his dad! 👋
Flying like a pro
Good video Noel. Lovely trip been there a few times myself from Tollerton. By the way, the cross wind was about 5kts. Wind 220/10, 30 degrees off using the sixth rule 3/6 x 10= 5kts. Are you a Stags fan like myself? Happy landings. Brian Payne
Nice vid. I’ve landed there too. Love that the QFE is the same as the QNH

You flew right over my neck of the woods (Wrexham/Chester). I’d have waved if I’d have known 👋🏻
You actually fly !! Well I never guessed
Hey Noel! Not sure what you’re allowed to do with the licenses and ratings that you have, but what about crossing the channel/north sea in the PA28 and visiting the Netherlands? Would be absolutely lovely!
As a north walian I despair at your attempts at a Welsh accent 😂

3:06 I might have seen you fly over my house as you flew over stoke :D
Sam: What does the fuel pump do?" Noel: "Pumps fuel!"........Come on Dad you can do better than that!!! :-)
Morning Noel, A great video, some wonderful father and son bonding. Keep flying my friend. Is the aircraft yours? Kind regards DS

I had the the same experience on my first trip into Caernarfon, fighting that crosswind above the caravan park! Worth it though

It’s certainly a fun approach, crazy how quick it comes up to meet you right at the end of the runway. Looks like an amazing place to stay though!
The "blue quarry" at 4:17 is Hoffman Quarry, part of Harpur Hill Quarry near Buxton. The blue coloration is due to the presence of Calcium Carbonate in the water, which gives it a pH of around 11. It's a bit of a tourist attraction, despite the local Council trying to discourage same by dying it black in 2013, 2016, and early 2020.

Hope to see your son fly like you
Great Vid. What bluetooth gps do you use?
hi noel you should challenge your self take over the pond with family or solo to US on rental Cessna citation or learjet be interesting to see you take on these flight conditions
I also fly out of Gamston having recently got my PPL and just started to venture further out so finding your videos quite helpful. Do you have a Instrument rating (R)? I think the the Arrow is out of service at the moment?
How cool would it be for noel to become a flight instructor 🔥👍✅
Really lovely video Noel. Are you flying to the Halfpenny green fly in July 15th?

Thanks Roger, I'm gutted that I'm not in the country over the summer. We have the summer in Georgia this year so can't make it.
I live in Chesterfield you probably flew right over 🤣
Nice video. What happened to your earlier plane G-GALB?
@FlyWithNoelPhilips

Thanks! LB is still there, but I will tend to use it more on the shorter flights. They use it for training too meaning its often fullly booked, whereas YT has a lot more availability.
TNT Beacon, is that near Ashbourne?
10:13 What is that white thing sucker mounted to the cockpit window?
Sam looks like a young version of my younger brother also called sam

You probably passed over me near Rhyl
Why did you go into IMC while flying VFR?
Most important question - did you lean the mixture? :-P

Does that app work on airliners ie on flight safe mode??
@FlyWithNoelPhilips

It does indeed! I actually use it (and Foreflight) on commercial flights.
You descended a bit quick, it happens 🤣🤣
Hi Noel, noticed you flying through cloud. Think you have your ifr rating but wasn’t this a vfr flight and should not be close to clouds. Not being critical, just interested to know. Thanks Tony
@FlyWithNoelPhilips

Hi Tony, in the UK you can fly VFR into IMC outside of controlled airspace as long as you have your rating. If you're inside controlled airspace you need to advise the controller you wish to switch to IFR and they give you a clearance.

Had the same question. Whilst legal, still wonder if that might be courting a mid-air collision in the future. Presumably, ATC is just providing traffic advisories but NOT responsible for traffic separation as one would be if IFR. PS love the Dad-son venture.
As a North Walian, please don't do that accent again! 😂
As a welsh person, that welsh accent could have been worse 🙂

Sounded pretty bad to me 😂😂😂😂
I thought if you were a VFR pilot you couldn't fly through cloud, but you clearly are
Methinks a budding pilot
This can't be a real Noel Philips video... You didn't do a typical moan: "I can't believe that I am flying in this 50 year-old bag of old spanners. It makes such a noise that I can hardly hear myself think. The cabin service is just bloody awful and there is this passenger next to me who insists on asking questions about fuel pumps. I mean, what the hell does he expect me to know about fuel pumps, I'm not a bloody engineer!"
