This is absolutely ridiculous. You did your best to ask for the price before getting the job done, it’s not your fault Harry. The man had other plans from the start. In Sri Lanka, price of a pair of shoes will be around RS 3000. There are some people trying to scam foreigners. Even some times they scam Sri Lankan people too. If you are buying some thing or hiring taxi, first thing you have to do is ask for price. If he doesn’t say, better thing is to leave him. Since you are a full time traveller, getting caught on those scammers is very low compared to other foreigners. But, some foreigners get caught on those scammers. There are alot of genuine sellers. But this is definitely disgusting.

I am in Canada but as a S.Lankan I got upset too especially to a nice guy like you. There are some tourists who try their best to get something at the lowest price as possible, and get upset with the vendors and unlike you guys they don't even give anything extra after.

If someone works or lives near bambalapitiya find this man and show this video (he works somewhere around station road - in front of Majestic city) he not only destroyed Harry’s shoes but also hospitality of Sri Lankan people as well.

OMG 😱 Rs.3000??? I feel shame as a Sri Lankan and Sorry for the incident. And if I meet him, I will explain to him how to do the business honestly.

No matter what part of the world you guys go there will always be honest and scrupulous people take this as a learning lesson . You guys are doing a great job highlighting places most people heard about but may never see in person .

1. It was totally clear at the first glance that if somebody is not agreeing to tell the price beforehand, that alone is a sign right off the bat that you were going to get hit with a hefty fee. You should've just walked away if he refused to give the price upfront 2. Past performance does not indicate the future, especially when it comes to getting scammed. Just because you found honest ppl for 2 weeks, it does not mean that you were not going to get scammed 3. That shoes looked as old as it could get. Should've just bought a new pair from a store where they clearly display the prices in bold font. So yeah, this one is on you Sire~

That was disgusting. I would've been so angry, but you guys kept your calm, well done. Him not giving you a price was a massive red flag. Never agree to anything without confirming the price first, that goes for everything, in any country. I guess you trusted him easily because, like you said, you've had only good experiences with Sri Lankans prior to that. Tbh, I would've got away from him as soon as he touched your shoes without your permission - that was another red flag for me. The part about him having 35 years of experience cleaning shoes is probably fake because he clearly didn't clean your shoes properly. Thank you for giving the shoes away instead of binning them

This is unfortunately widespread in Sri Lanka. Tuk-tuk riding can also be annoying. Even when you agree on a price, you may find yourself in an unpleasant situation. Higher prices for tourists is a standard. A smile on people's faces means trouble very often. The solicitation attempts take place on the train, beach, shops, tuk-tuk, name it yourself. It's a pity it looks like that. Non-trade people are very nice and friendly. Watch out for the scams.

Here after please ask price before you buy or give bro... There are some few people like this in every where. Thanks you for publish this kind of video because this location is very famous and people get to know about this crazy man. This will be good attention for relevant department.
