I’ve been going to Hamilton to visit family since 1963. It was very nice then. Now the downtown looks like a post apocalyptic movie set.

There are some places that are rougher than others. There is a large number of people in Hamilton, changing it slowly. The buildings and infrastructure take longer to catch up, it will get better!

Most of the places you talked about are not on Barton St. Barton St doesnt run to McMaster. It also doesnt run to Battlefield park.

You are right, the idea is to show the character of the neighbourhoods around Barton St and on the opposite ends.

I am moving back to the Hammer after 50 years of absence. I grew up on Westdale and went to McMaster. I shopped very hard and found a house in the Gibson district at a very good price. It is between Barton and Cannon streets and there are bus stops at both ends. Yes, parts of Barton street can be ragged and does deserve some of the bad rap but when looking closely I have found some great cafes and shops, plus proximity to Sherman and the event centres there. I am loving it! My little enclave has many citizens from Poland, Ukraine and other parts of Europe and the little deli is amazing. The Ukrainian Catholic church is 3 blocks away. I really enjoy the diversity. Great price (450K), easy access to transportation, including GO to Pearson airport..

I lived in Hamilton….Grew up there….You are looking at Hamilton with rose colored glasses. Hamilton, unfortunately has really gone downhill. The homeless downtown and all around Whitehern is a crime….also how dirty the majority of the city is including Hess Village (dump) is such a disappointment. West Hamilton use to be beautiful….no longer….all those beautiful homes they have torn down years ago in order to expand the university remain barren land still after all these years is just plain bad city planning. Hamilton is not what it use to be, and I am afraid it never wil be again. Not to mention the ridiculous housing market which is unattainable for most people.

I agree with a number of your points. As Hamilton diversifies its image, people moving in from the GTA, foreign investment and new development many patterns and habits are being disrupted for those that have been here for many years. With additional tax revenue, better social programs can be funded and that many of these challenges may be addressed effectively. It will be interesting to see how Hamilton and surrounding suburbs change into the future.

I was a student at Mac for four years in the 90s. Loved living in Westdale. You could have mentioned Cootes Paradise. The Durand neighborhood is also very nice.

I also went to Mac and lived 2 houses down from the Tally Ho. Cootes Paradise is a great suggestion and was made for quite enjoyable bike rides when time should have been spent studying for exams 😉 Perhaps Cootes will highlighted in a future video, much appreciated!

Barton doesn't have worst roads. It's only 1 street. In Montreal all roads are like that.

I always loved the Hess Village, Queen and George Street areas (not necessarily the crowds and traffic).. But half of Hess Village is eerily abandoned now- which I've never seen before the COVID era.. I mean, I've never known Hess Village to have *ANY* abandoned buildings; People just packed up and left between 2020-22..💔 That would be interesting if you could investigate that for a future video.. Just a suggestion. Thank-You

Just took our first drive to Hamilton! Absolutelty shocking any Canadian city can look this terrible. I would parralell it to be equal in appearance of the slums of detroit. We had to go to their hospital there. I was actually kinda scared. Clearly no one has invested in good road planning, your hit with 4 lane one way streets which makes it difficult to get back out of the city the way you came. Barton street area,is so gross,,seen homeless encampments in the childrens playground. I wouldnt move to hamilton if someone paid me! An embarrassement to Ontario and Canada.

Certain parts are in need of repair and there are people with personal struggles out and about. This city grows on you and people are very direct and open in expressing themselves. There are great areas you are yet to experience that will change your mind! Thank you for sharing your opinion!

I'm sorry Ahmad, but I think you're a little confused. You should probably visit and drive around Hamilton a little more. Your facts are way off. The areas you're talking about such as Hess Village, McMaster U, Westdale are not even close to Barton St. Barton (to the west) ends at Dundurn St. It doesn't even go near Mac or Westdale. Going east, you showed King St businesses in Stoney Creek, not Barton. Again, the two streets are miles apart. I've lived here 40 years and worked for the Spectator for 15 years. I kinda know the area. Please visit us so you can get your facts straight! Thank you.
