This one brought up a lot of emotion for me. Always had to exist in spaces with what we had or could get due to living in remote areas pre internet. No room has felt decorated since I was a teen. Parents and ex didn’t want to decorate so every room was depressing to me. You’ve changed my outlook and made me realise I deserve a house that expresses my personality and can change it up as I wish within my budget. ❤

I lived off grid in the Amazon. I did decorate because I was raising 4 children and realized it would be their childhood memories. I had to be creative because everything had to fit in a canoe or small Cessna plane😂

@@RitaVernoy Oh wow. So glad you did that for you and your family, that’s called intentional decorating in the extreme! We were on the grid but in a small mining town in one of the hottest and most remote areas in WA, Australia for 13yrs. Freight costs were awful but was grateful for freight trucks and planes from 1600km away in any direction (or more). Then I moved to the Northern Territory (Aust), still remote but so many more shops. Hello from Australia!

Thank you for giving me permission to give forward my inherited mother's and grandmother's silver pieces, tea cup collections, & various collections. I have felt so guilty that I just don't want to display them no matter how hard I try. Their styles are not my style just like my 28 yr old daughter's style is beautiful but different than mine - and I won't be "saving" things for her unless she volunteers that she wants something. With your help I'm making my home the way I've always dreamed of. Love watching your videos and then transforming my spaces to suit me. This video is enlightening along with the fun we all have with you, Jack, and Louie.

I found the Swedish death cleaning technique gave me the permission to get rid of things and not feel guilty about saying no to taking on other people’s stuff. I also don’t save things for my kids but asked them if they wanted something before donating it. It helps a lot with decluttering decisions.

When it comes to color, I've noticed that how I decorate has a lot to do with the landscape and environment I'm in. When I was in Los Angeles, there was so much stimulation, excitement, and stress all around me, I needed a neutral, minimalist haven to come home and collapse into. But now I've retired to a remote area in the northern Midwest and the winters are long and stark... now I need color and patterns and plants, because for over half the year, there's nothing out there but snow. And I'm bored. Bring on the wallpaper.

I think it takes the talented eye of a great designer in most cases to mix pattern, color and texture in such a way that it is pleasing, melds beautifully, is sophisticated and not at all busy, distracting or overdone. Far easier to just stick with solids and neutrals on all counts; speaking for myself at least.

People need to know what they can "live" in and what they can "vacation" in. Maybe you need a more calming neutral place to live but love to vacation out loud or vice versa. People also should know that you don't have to purchase everything you like, you might just find that you can't live with it. I personally love color and pattern but I can't live with too much of it. I love neutral but if it's too neutral, it's boring to me. So, find your balance.

Love you two! Jack lives rent free in my head😂. Agree with not having to use what you had all in the past. We recently downsized our house, went down to 1/2 size home- empty nesters now-and we were trying to fit all our furniture in the living room. Finally told my husband we had more furniture than the house can handle. Tough decision as we’ve always bought quality pieces that cost a little more.

Love Louis! I am drawn to loud, bold, colors BUT I only decorate my home with neutral colors. I used to pack my house and paint walls with color but I quickly learned all that color gets old and tiring and can be expensive and a lot of work to change everything. Now everything is neutral (off white, beige, black) with colorful accessories. It works well in my home.

You are so right. We are all different! How we decorate our homes should enhance our lives, not someone else's. And, the only way we can make that happen is by taking the time to get to know ourselves and the ones who live with us. I suspect that many of us live pretty hectic lives and need to balance that out with a quiet environment to prevent stress. Others may want a more exuberant atmosphere. Colors, textures, to match or not are personal considerations. Studying trends can help train our eye, but trends are short lived and blindly following them will leave us with decor that doesn't reflect us and soon looks dated. Authenic decorating will bring us joy in the present and save us money in the future, because we have chosen well.

Hi Valentina & Jack😊. Fun video for a slow Sunday night here. I agree with you that a lot of stuff we have sometimes doesn't work for our spaces, so we must decide whether to edit it or keep it and love it anyway and work with it in some NEW imaginative modern times kind of way that a lot of us may crave. I have so many things my husband and I bought and collected that I still treasure even though some may not be considered "in-style" today--whatever that means. Most of the pieces we purchased have clean lines and were purchased as heirloom pieces that we hope will transend the ever changing styles du jour(aka hopefully classic😮). I also inherited many of my Grandparent's antiques and nearly antiques that they so meticulously used but did not abuse as Grandma would often say. So, a lot of different decades in my furnishings can make for an eclectic living space. Therefore, I am joyfully challenged with balancing my treasures into a contemporary design aesthetic that I/we treasure! Over the years, I fortunately have adopted an evolving love and sensibility for 'vintage and mod' as I call it. Balancing out the beauty of the new and old and having an eye for the relationship they create in a space is simply aMaZing - if done well. Creating a home with my family's heirlooms and our life journey treasures is simply priceless. I hope everyone here who shares the same level of design enthusiasm for their home is able to understand *themselves* enough to achieve their ideal home and NOT just "copy" someone elses design but instead be INspirEd by their ideas and their thinking processes and achieve for themselves a truly unique and original space that speaks the language of their soul and their families' soul. And Jack, my HubZ is your age and is an IT specialist, and he calls it a 'hamburger'🍔. He never has used 'stack' along with it, though. Silly words that make us giggle😅. Must be called a hamburger cuz it kinda looks like... bun burger bun😅😊😅 hense the 'stack'! Goodnight and sweet design 😴 dreams to all. ❤❤❤

I love colour in my own space, but I look at it like that fashion quote - take off one accessory before you leave the house. My furniture is all neutral and most of my colours are either plain or closer to texture than pattern - and in two colours (green and purple) rather than an explosion. I don't think you'd like it (also most of my furniture is thrifted) - and that's OK - like you, I respect different people's styles and learn a lot from you.

A friend of ours was moving and gave us his entire living room set, rug included. He has good, clean taste, so we got lucky. Cream white everything. Large rug, matching tables. It was amazing! It was so unexpected. But if you want something new, keep an open mind and be open to good stuff coming to you from unexpected sources. You don’t always need to buy brand new things if what you currently have doesn’t suit you. Just be clear about what you want, keep putting it out there and when the opportunity comes - jump on it!

When I studied colour and materials, one of the major "ahah" moments for me was when we learned that the more complicated a persons life is, the less busy they need their home to be and neutrals give off that calm, restful vibe that people need in their sanctuary. This is why young adults with no responsibilities love colour, texture, and pattern. Then, as jobs become more complicated, people get married and possibly have kids, and parents age - colour, pattern and texture start to become too much amidst the chaos of life. Later in life as retirement sets in, kids have left home, parents are gone and life settles into a more simple routine - colour, etc. starts to make a stronger appearance again. Clearly I am accidentally saying, based on your design choices, your life appears to be very complex.

I don’t think you’re rebelling it’s just not you. My style is quite different from my mothers. I used to think I needed her approval, she has a strong personality and hasn’t a problem with pointing out what she does or doesn’t like. I don’t need her approval anymore,I like my style it makes me comfortable and my husband. I’m frequently complimented and asked for my advice in their homes. I didn’t mind when I was little that my mom decorated my room without my input. I liked it because my friends rooms were bland and boring and I thought it showed that at least she cared about our surroundings.

I usually dont leave comments but I have to say a BIG thank you for what you said, especially about matching things. There are certainly many rules that establish a good interior design but non matchy-matchy approach is not one of them! Obviously is not trendy, but we can't downgrade every interior that has matching bed and bedside table etc. It is just silly. This obsession on every single interior chanel or blog "how to avoid matchy matchy" is unhealthy and annoying beyond anything. Thanks for being natural, yourself and so refreshing.

I like the neutral colors that will stand the test of time. My kitchen, living room and hallway connect but have different texture walls. I painted them a Valspar Dusty Rose which is similar to Benjamin Moore’s Rose Bisque. My bedroom is the same color. One bedroom is painted a dark gray. I plan to paint my bathroom a light taupe color but have not settled on an exact color. I do have an inspiration piece. The next room will be my hobby room. It will not be white. It will be a color that is soothing and reflects light. If pieces don’t work I will repurpose or get rid of it.

I pretty much have the same colour palette in my home as yours but the way I do “pops of colour” 😆in my home is with gold/brass accessories which I think look great amongst all the black, grey, cream, wood and black metal that composes my home.

like you said. Understand and know yourself. Your place must reflect who you are and feel happy when you sit down with a cup of tea/coffee at the end of the day. my best friend loves color, her place is very colorful love to spend time in her place. But I could not live with all these colors. love my neutral color place. (I know she thinks it is a bit boring 😂) I just embrace the difference. what would be boring is that we all have the same decor.

I agree. I like symmetry and “easy on the eyes” decorating. I get anxious if there’s too many things that clash. Watching your channel or any interior decorating when you help clients or viewers with their home styles I often see that people either put too much furniture and knickknacks in their rooms or not enough, like just a sofa, recliner and a giant TV. What always surprises me is how often I see area rugs that are way too small for the space.

Trying to put everything in one house. Like you guys, I’ve had places in different areas. Savannah condo is different than the Palm Desert place. My coastal home is different still. Every place has a vibe. I like to design with inspiration from the place. Some things had to go. Lots of neutrals. I like more color than Valentina. For me, each pice needs its space. My primary home is different than a vacation home. My vacation home is a place for a week. Don’t want that vibe everyday. It’s not an everyday house. It’s a retreat from the humidity.

I redid my color scheme at home this year in neutrals because being at home with 4 kids and all of their shoes and things strewn about in combination with color everywhere was totally stressing me out. I am SO attracted to color and pattern so I had to really change the way I shop and now I just save that for my wardrobe because I def prefer color in that department.

I have the same problem. I can’t stand all of my kids’ brightly colored things clashing with my decor, so I try to make sure all of my decor is neutral. Maybe once the kids are out of the house I’ll add an accent color or 2 😂

I love your color palette but not sure why the art work needs to be so neutral. Colors in nature, landscapes for instance are bringing nature into your home too.

I do not like neutral walls in the sense of whites creams.. I need an actual color. Not Skittle but pigment. I also think it’s a balance for most. Nothing too jarring or offensive. I have more energizing colors in the living spaces and calmer still color in the resting spaces. I do love symmetry.. it just makes sense. I definitely like clean and tidy. Nothing with too much going on .. also like each item to be noticeable. Not lost in the sauce with a bunch of other things.

My living room walls are your nightmare. They are covered in colorful wall arts. I choose which colors however so there is a pattern to what I see. I had changed my curtains to yellow tones and I had to put my old dark blue back on. Yellow was way too much and I couldn't rest. My walls however are neutral. My bedroom is neutral with calming wall arts (such as sage type colors and neutral walls).

Matching sets of furniture is like matching sets of jewelry .... very boring and unimaginative. It is nice when they share a commonality like "cousins" but they don't need to be "sisters." By the way, your dog is hilarious!

Yes! I’m going to update my sofa myself (lower the back cushions and replace the seat cushions), have painted the lounge and bedroom, changed the trim, created my own decor and made my own Photoshopped artwork. Doing a lot of free or cheap changes outside with what I have to make it easier to maintain.
