AVID Listening: Why the Pellar is a Great New Phono Stage for Aspiring Analogue Addicts

Музыка

Digital fans look away now! This week's episode sees the guys audition a new 'affordable audiophile' phono stage made from the ground up in Huntingdon, Cambridge, by turntable specialist AVID. Mike and David agree that it's a most effective performer, and easily as good as anything else around at the price.
This episode also shows best practice by David on how to put a record in and out of a sleeve correctly, and a true confession of when he proposed to Propaganda's Claudia Brücken.
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Business executive Mike has a wealth of knowledge from previous hi-fi retail experience, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET, he's picked up a few things along the way.
So relax and enjoy some one-take hi-fi riffing - and please leave your comments below. And don’t forget to hit the Subscribe button, this one goes up to eleven!
The eighties-tastic title tune is called ‘UFO/Mike’s Jumper’, and used with the express permission of our old pal and rights holder Simon Lythe.

I'm another viewer who loves phonostage reviews and the language employed to describe what they do and do not do. Like to say no vinyl was harmed in the making of this video...

Oh boy, this David Sylvian album is crazy good on every level, with Holger Czukay from CAN making these bakground noise, short waves radio samples, etc, etc. I can't help but play this record for those who don't know David Sylvian universe. The more time fly the better it seems to get. I'd love to try this phono stage for sure. Great review guys!

I’ve had my Pellar for about 4 months now. Upgraded my tt and cartridge from an mm to an mc. Was concerned how the Pellar would handle it. There was no need - it sounds amazing and scaled up really, really well. I’d highly recommend this phono stage.

Radium was once used to make watches luminous, now replaced by less hazardous tritium. Another informative and highly entertaining riff chaps 👍 Good to talk to you Mike in the corridor at the Heathrow show. We discussed the new £8k ls 3/5a’s and Dave’s extravagant car purchase to get him home from the north of England! 😂

Hey fellas. I’ve really enjoyed your recent riffs… that calculator amp (can’t remember the name) was intriguing. You said there weren’t any phono stages around in the 80’s but I have a Lentek phono stage from I think 70’s-80’s. I assumed you would have heard of or even had one yourselves? I recently bought a Rega Fono something or other phono stage for around £110 to connect my LP12 and Willsenton R8. MM only but really excellent little device that to my ears is totally neutral. Anyway… keep up the good work 🎶🎵👊🏻

I use the Arcam Rphono myself and think it's a very good phono stage. Especially as I purchased it second hand at £200. Duran Duran - Notorious. Fantastic album (not that I'm biased Duranie or anything). Power Station and Arcadia were before this.

It wasn't easy in the 80's to get a phono stage but one option and the first I bought was the Hart of Oswestry, Shropshire K1500 kit based on the Linsley Hood design but you had to soldier it (or buy pints for someone that could!) They certainly can make a huge difference as I found running the Pro-ject dsc3b here outdoing a Rotel seperate one from the early 90's.

Chaps, it's good to see you do your usual thing! An entertaining video for sure! Even if the quality of semiconductors has improved considerably in the last few decades, very few manufacturers seem to care about integrating a really great phono stage into their preamps and integrated amplifiers. So, the Avid is a compelling proposition. Still, there are a few makes that still do a fanstastic job integrating really great phono stages in their amplifiers. However, they are few and far in between. Regarding the luminous record, if it glows in pitch black darkness without first being exposed to a light source, then it is indeed radioactive! The actual paint was known under many names but in all instances, it was a mixture of radium (a radio isotope) and phosphor. Radium itself doesn't glow but it does provide the phosphor with what it needs to glow - energy. Apart from toxicity, the mixture is rather frail and tends to disintegrate with age. Needless to say, inhaling the dust or leaving it on your fingers is not a good thing. The 'insidious' thing about it is that the radiating energy from the radium actually breaks down the phosphor. To put it simply, it can still be highly radioactive and not glow at all! I'd try to find out as much as possible about the record. It'd be really ridiculous if the record was radioactive but you never know. During the Cold War, they would paint the insides of armoured vehicles, tanks, bunkers and even civilian nuclear shelters. In the end, the occupants didn't fall ill from the H-bombs, they were poisoned by the paint! Ain't that a cheerful comment!! Cheers!
