Avi is a basso profoundo trained in opera, now doing folk country the music he grew up with. He struggles with anxiety and his mom fought cancer for a few yrs, the main reasons he left Pentatonix. He has slowed down and now working at his own pace. Musically, he is brilliant worth listening to : )

@@st4rpt_603 he's just very well trained, with a solid 3 octaves sans head voice or chest voice. He would be a decent tenor, just because of his vocal control, but he has true power carrying the low Octaves and can hit the low G, which is rare even among basses. I listen to all of the great bass singers and he would be probably in the top 3 performing today, and could walk into any opera house and be hired if that was his passion.

Avi Kaplan is amazing! When he was with Pentatonix, he did something called overtone singing in some of the songs, which is basically where you're singing 2 notes at one time (usually a drone note on the low end, and then manipulating the resonances to bring out one of the overtones above the drone). It's a really cool technique, and not something you commonly hear. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any of his solo work where he's used this technique, but you can hear it in a couple of Pentatonix's performances on The Sing Off (E.T. and Dog Days Are Over) and in their covers of Starships and A-ha.

He was "borrrrrrn in California Raiiiiised up by the trees. Caaaaaame down from the mountain. Heeeaaarrrrt's a followin' the breeze." Anyway, yes. Please investigate his music more. =D The song I quoted is "Born in California", the first song on his set list on his recent (and first) solo tour; it's a good introduction to what he sounds like when he performs live. For something similar to "Change on the Rise" (but audio-only), I recommend Avi's most recent release, "Get Down". For something with a contrasting mood, check out Avi's "Otherside".

They did of a cover of Johnny Cash Ring of Fire featuring Avi Kaplan which is fricken amazing! Another favorite of mine is Home Free’s cover of Man of Constant Sorrow from the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Yes everything that Home Free does is strictly a Capella zero instruments including their beat boxer Adam who in Man of Constant Sorrow makes a sound like a true harmonica! @@BowsersreactionPit I saw Avi in concert this summer and ran into a group of metal heads at his St. Louis show. After the show they were making plans to go see him in Dallas. He is rapidly leaving PTX behind. He has only been solo for a couple of years but everytime he comes out with something new he just gets better and better. You can't really tell from his releases how powerful the live music is. He just blows the roof off. He's just turned 30 and has a massive musical background so I think 3 more years and he's going to be golden. Just as a side note, he did all the bass and overtones for the sound score for Blade Runner 2049.

Bowser’s reaction Pit oh I love metal too, however it’s interesting to step outside of the metal box to experience something that is amazing but may have never been something you’d try on your own. Trust me I have taken several metal heads to see Home Free live and they were mind blown in their first song! Lots of people are sometimes too afraid to try something new but you might miss out on something special if you don’t try it first. They’re on fire right now with people who love all different genres that would’ve never given them a chance before but because someone asked for it they now are hooked on them!

Metalheads + Avi Kaplan?! Finally! I feel less alone 🤘😁 I don't know who requested this to you but he/she did right. Avi is a talented vocalist. He's a bass with a beautiful tone and a great voice control. He can also sing overtones! (I'll leave a link down if you're intrigued...) 9:03 Nope! That was him in background as well doing all the layering. He sang the bassline too (heard the descending bass during the chorus? HIM) 4:30 you've mentioned Asaf Avidan which is fantastic (saw him live 2 times). Completely different voices but pretty similar style. Same for LP. Great artists for sure. Years ago, I saw a forum post from Avi’s high school chorus teacher who spoke of completely overhauling his curriculum to highlight Avi from his first day as a freshman in school, he was that obviously remarkable. He brought in a very well-known bass singer in the acapella world to give a day-long seminar to his kids, and arranged for the guy to give Avi specific instruction on how a bass singer should use the microphone. (That bass singer is now with the group Manhattan Transfer, but before joining them, he ran sound for a Pentatonix concert tour.)

So follow him and Pentatonix yourselves. They are worth listening too. First, do their Pentatonix cover of Mary Did you KNow; Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, or "Come Along". They all become big from the NBC show The Sing-Off Thrid season. They won by the way, but the label dropped them, went to KZread VIdeos to promote themselves and now are in their 8th year by doing a World Tour.

When they light the torches, I can almost hear someone saying "We're heading to the Frankenstein place". Or perhaps they are heading to the longboat to set it ablaze with the body of a fallen viking comrade. When I saw that this had been suggested to a pair of metalheads, I was concerned that you might not like it, as it's definitely not metal. I'm glad that you liked it, and I agree that Avi's voice is awesome. Most of his work does NOT sound like this. He has a wonderful voice but you have to pick and choose between his songs because he tends toward a bit of flower child. When he gets it right though, the ladies adore what that deep voice does to the internal organs. If you don't mind a Christmas song or two take a look at Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies and God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen by Pentatonix. Avi Kaplan is great in those.

Yeah, his live performances from this summers tour are a lot more powerful than his videos. Probably still trying to find his way solo. He's been posting short clips with just him singing and playing the guitar. Those things are him at his best. I hope he's headed in that direction.
