Average (arithmetic mean): GRE / GMAT Math
A quick video covering my favourite trick for averages, a topic that comes up all the time on the GRE and the GMAT. You know the formula for average: sum of terms divided by number of terms, but I think of it a different way...

The GRE and GMAT are two of most used graduate exams for those seeking to study a Masters Degree or Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree. The Graduate Record Exam and Graduate Management Admissions Test have been taken for over 50 years and are taken by approximately 600,000 and 300,000 people worldwide annually, respectively. These exams are typically taken between the ages of 18-40, by those who have completed, or are about to complete, their Bachelors Degree.
Enquiries: philip@gretutorlondon.com If you’re now ready to get into your dream MBA program, my former student, Angel, is offering virtual private Admissions coaching. She was admitted into Harvard Business School, The Wharton School of Business, and Columbia Business School (accepted into every school she interviewed for) after graduating from UCLA with a degree in Communication. She also got 3 perfect scores on the GRE’s Analytical Writing Assessment (99th percentile).

Hi Philip, at first thank you for your efforts (you are the best). For the community could be very helpful if you explain how to attack the totally underlined sentence corrections. Wish you the best, have a nice day!

Useful man❤
Thank you!
the last problem is so tricky for me 😅
Good bro
For the last question, say x equals 40, then y would equal 53. Since both x and y are variables, why can't we assign 40 and 53? If we do it this way, then a,b,c,d and e are all correct.
Hey Philip. could u please make a tutorial on sequences? and combinations i want to know a standard way or trick to solve all those tricky qs. thanks

Greetings! Your videos are very helpful. I am currently preparing for the GMAT. I've come across a question involving the arithmetic mean similar to what you just explained. However, it is harder and more confusing. Would it be possible to ask for your approach or insight about it? Thank you!

Loved the trick, but couldn't understand what you did in the last problem after the equation x+y= 93. Please clarify. Thanks.

I mean, if the middle number was 35, highest number would have been 58 and still the average would have been 37.

Hi Philip, I’m a sophomore in college and I would like to know where do I begin to start studying for the GRE? Is it best to take a practice test without studying at all to see where I need to focus on and start there. Can you list books, websites, and programs you think is great to study off please?

34. Four students contributed to a charity drive, and the average (arithmetic mean) amount contributed by each student was $20. If no student gave more than $25, what is the minimum amount that any student could have contributed?
@TheTestedTutor
3 жыл бұрын
You follow the trick I showed, so multiply the average to get a total of $80. We want minimum for 1 student so we maximise the others, that's 3 x max of 25 = 75. Leaving $5 for the minimum. :)

@@TheTestedTutor OOh thanks Philip! I use your average x number of "items"= sum formula and the weighted average trick for all of my practice problems on this topic and it works! but I always get stuck on the ones like this with a min/max possible stuff..i would not have thought to max the 3 students ( 25 x 3) I instead I was trying to find the sum , 3 x20 which is 60 then i didn't know what to do with it haha

Please explain how we got $5?
why isn't F, 77 correct? X would be less than Y, and the average equals 37. Do you mind elaborating on this one please?

Since it says "could be" why is the answer not C, D or E? It doesn't seem to ask for the absolute highest value it could be but rather of the choices which are possible scenarios? And C, D, and E all seem to fit?

Thanks for the tips. However, in question 1, the wordings are not clear. The average was 500 in the first 3 tests (so the total is 1500). In the 4th test, the average increased to 550. But when you multiply 550 by 4, it means she attempted 4 new attempts!
