Avenul de sub Vârful Grind (Grind Pit) -769m Piatra Craiului

Following the last 2 explorations trips in November and December 2019, Avenul de sub Vârful Grind (Grind Pit) reached -769m, a new depth record for a cave in Romania. The cave is located in Piatra Craiului Mountains, near the main ridge, at an altitude of 1922m .
The previous minimum point was reached in 1995, at ~ -544m, where a large boulder choke, made of tectonic breccia, blocked the explorations. Across the years, various attempts were made to pass it and finally in the September 2019 camp, there was a breakthrough and new parts were explored downto -581m where another major boulder choke stand in our way. In November, the boulder choke was passed and 4 new pitches were explored to ~ -650m. In the next exploration trip in December, 5 new pitches were descended and the current -769m depth was reached.
The latest discoveries are the result of the work of over 200 people from several generations and various speleo clubs, who worked in Grind Pit in the last 34 years and dreamed of further exploring the depths of Piatra Craiului.
