This episode has to be the best recap ever made, instead of just old scenes, they re-make them from the perspective of the other side of the conflict and let the cast react to the representation, plus it forces them to face the worse case scenario, an end in which they fail
It's a pretty widespread fan belief that the reason why Toph is played by an absolute beast of a man is because all the people the playwright interviewed were too embarrassed to admit that they got their butts whooped by a little girl, so they just all claimed that the Earthbender that beat them was a big and strong man.

Another way to look at it is that since it´s also a propaganda play, she is envisioned as a monsterlike figure. Throughout history that method has been used to dehumanize the enemy. Fear is a great tool to maipulate soldiers and society.

Their reputation is all by word of mouth. Most people only hear that there's a blind Earthbender named Toph who travels with them, who is probably the best bender anyone's ever seen, and is a loud mouth. When people hear of this, they would immediately think of some really strong looking guy who screams in the way that a lot of Earthbenders do. People have to remember they live in a proto-industrial world without reliable sources of information and no photographs. All the rumours about Toph would result in what we end up seeing.
Getting closer to one of the most satisfying endings ever.

Facts
I just noticed now that even the side conversations in between the play recap info that isn’t covered. Toph’s reminds us of her and Uncle’s conversation about Zuko and Aang reminds us that he locked his chakras.

The playwright’s sources included the cabbage merchant, the pirates, some POWs, and the singing nomads (secret tunnels!). Sonce it wasn’t said that was all the sources I assume there were others. Soldiers, workers, and civilains probably Play Zuko was voiced by Dante Basco’s brother! The creators confirmed that Jet did die
Little trivia, the reason a girl is playing Aang in the play wasn't because they portrayed him as feminine or something like that but because there used to be a Peter Pan play where Peter Pan was played by an older woman.

It’s really common for adult women to play younger boys in plays (especially pantomime) - but even more common in animation w voice actors so I always thought it was a nod to people thinking an adult woman voiced Aang (which I thought initially watching it cause he’s such a good actor)

Yeah I'm sure that's the explanation the creators where going with. Ember Island play Aang is based on Peter Pan. Both stories are about a boy who can fly. Not because the Fire Nation was made homphobic by the awful TLOK comics.

The "older woman" you speak of; her name wouldn't happen to be Mary Martin now, would it? If so, then I know EXACTLY which Peter Pan play you're referring to!
This episode is the best recap episode I have ever seen of any show, usually recap episodes are cheap montages and people end up skipping them because they are boring, but this ended up being one of my favorite episodes of the whole show.
Everyone’s (especially Toph’s) reaction to the actors playing them is priceless, LOL

I always liked the implication that Toph's Ember Island actor was because nobody would admit they got beat up by a little girl.

@@saberstrike000 LOL, OMG YES that is now my personal head canon, except I think it’s more that she’s blind and not so much that she’s a girl, after all Katara, June, Tai Lee, Mei, Azula, The Kyoshi Warriors, Hama the Puppetmaster, all kicked as much butt as Toph, but they ain’t all muscllely dudes, but who knows, LMAO!!!

@@oliverfischer289 You're not wrong about history, but the fact is, the Gaang isn't painted as particularly villainous in the play. Caricatures, yes, but they're still the protagonists and their heroic actions are still presented more or less without spin. Obviously that was a device to set up for the twist at the play's finale, but I still feel the "inaccuracies" are meant to be a combination of unreliable sources and flanderization by the playwrite rather than deliberate propaganda (again, until the final act, which is a very heavy tonal shift.)

@@saberstrike000 Also, I think it was a nod by the creators to what could've been. Originally, Toph was gonna be a guy until the creators decided to change it. Greatest decision made btw.
This play is better then the entire last air bender movie 😂😂😂

And cost a fraction of the whole movie did
imo, the best comedic episode in the series. also Toph and Zuko's dynamic is really underrated i think,
Remember the part where everyone in audience is cheering the Fire Lord winning it'll be important for later.
Appas side gig. Selling the tails of his travels
Still more accurate than the film
Very crafty to put the sponsored ad into the video during the first act break in the episode
The writing on this show is just amazing
The only people I've seen catch who they got the information for the play from
One of my favourite episodes
While not one of my favourite episodes I do think this one is the most clever. It's basically a series recap but done in a really smart and creative way.
FYI…..pretty sure they obtained most of the details from the “knowledgeable merchant of cabbage 🥬“ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

The best season of two of my favorite shows MHA and ATLA
Where can I put in a request for what to react to next?
YES SPONSORSHIPPPP 👏👏👏👏👏
my favorite episode of ATLA is a filler episode in fact it's two filler episodes cuz I can't choose between them this one and tales of Ba Sing Se
they cast a man to play Toph because nobody would admit to being beat by a little girl. That's my theory anyways
Lmao I thought y’all finished this show already damn.
If Azula saw this. . .well I don't even wanna imagine.
Jake the Dog is play Toph and that makes me so happy
This episode is a comedy.
You do know that Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dimartino are bringing back the animation series for a continuation??? Because they are 🤷🏾♂️
YOU HAVE A SPONSOR!!!
11:15 they all know they shut brothas down w lines like that that’s why they dead 🤕😂😂😂
This episode was really matter both a recap at a screw you to the show at the same time ,KZread you trust me you thought things were crazy before this was just straight up hilarious and this wasn't even supposed to happen they just needed extra money so they gave him this so they can have some fun.
At least it’s better than the last airbender movie.

Movie? What movie? There is no The Last Airbender movie in these walls, here we are safe, here we are free.
Absolutely best episode! Korra tries to have a recap episode like this but it just isn't as good. And the Avatar not reading the room when someone is "confused" seems to be a thing...
You guys gotta react to Korra next, then Dragon Prince (includes some of the same writers).
Toph was cast as a man because it's joke referencing what the creators were going to do originally. So glad they made the change.
Cary 👏 😲 what you've been up to?
There's a season 2 of One punch man, I case that you didn't know
Full of meta inside jokes: Nickelodeon didn´t wanna acknowlege deaths, specially of a teenager (Jet), so they were subtle, because he definately officialy dead, that´s why the stakes are* high. Also I think that last comment was refering to the live action movie that must not be named.

Nick is wierd. They can't say Jet dies directly but showing a fraternal murder-suicide (Tarrlok killing Amon) is perfectly fine. Both shows had the same rating.
