I didn't like this episode as a kid but in retrospect it does have a whole lot to it. I appreciate the hell out of Huu's speech about the oneness of the world. it's such an incredibly lasting message

Idk why it’s so hard for some people to accept that there are filler episodes in this show. That doesn’t make it bad. Without filler episodes, TV shows get redundant and desensitize you to subtler plot points.

The Earthbender is actually a character we never meet. You were close in that it was Bryke's original idea for Aang's master, but Ehasz and others on the writing team created Toph instead.

That's right folks! All the elements that took this show from good to great (Iroh as a wise kind uncle figure instead of a harsh mentor; Katara being a badass and not just Aang's love interest; Toph being a girl and blind, not some hulking man who was basically a nice Boulder as Aang earthbending mentor; Sokka being Sokka aka clever and sarcastic instead of just comic relief; the very indepth, wellresearched eastern philosophy and folklore woven in; etc, etc) was the brainchild of Aaron Ehasz and his writing team, NOT Bryke.

If you've ever heard how Bryke talks about their own characters in interviews, and noticed how strangely OOC the Gaang can be in the comics and in TLoK, that's Bryke w/o Ehasz's writing coming through. Ehasz had a lot more nuanced understanding of not only the characters, but the philosophy they were using for the story than Bryke did. (Which is why Bryke apparently thought Katara would be ok with being a housewife and Aang's treatment of their children - his Tenzin preference - and forgot that she was an amazing war hero and freedom fighter and never gave her a statue in LOK even tho every other member of the Gaang got one, even the CABBAGE MAN got one (hahaha I'm not bitter, what??). Not to mention they completely unraveled Aang's character development of unlocking his crown chakra - a chakra which CANNOT EVER be opened thru physical means as it is an entirely mental and spiritual chakra - by just slapping in a conveniently placed rock. Or how they boil Zuko's character - probably one of the most intriguing characters and redemption arcs in tv history - down to a "suave bad boy" archetype when anyone who's watched the show knows he's not like that at all.)

"Don't injure Appa!" AHAHAHAHAaHAHa ahahaha haha ha ...Oh, I just made myself sad :(

This episode and the guru episode are my favorites. The depth they go into how we are all connected and the illusions we face in our lives is incredible. Especially in just 20ish minutes. This may have the goofiness of a kids show... but this is not a kids show. The deeper meanings and symbolism for humanity and morality is off the charts. I’m glad y’all enjoyed this show.

I would very well be feeling like Zuko when Iroh was himiliated like that for a gold piece.. People like that dude are jerks.. >.> I had the same reaction when they were hauled to the ground. No wy they would have survived that xD I love how Appa and Momo are both animalistic and humane in their intelligence etc. They are smart to a certain level becaus ethey sorta understand humans (esspecially Appa) but at the same time they do stuff like Momo wanting to call Aang with the wistle which makes no sense and Appa going wild bull in that cave when hit with some fire. Very animalistic AND humane at the same time and that is very special and greatly done :) I wanted to give Katara a big hug when she thought she saw her mom and it was a mirage and she cies. That was heartbreaking.. I can't even imagine what that must feel like.. Thankfully, I still have my mom and I love her dearly. Beautiful exlanation of everything being connected to each other!
