I haven't studied the fight or anything, but I'm betting it's a similar thing to what we subtly see throughout the show. Katara likely picked up a few tricks Pakku had never seen before, by watching Aang airbend

I kinda feel like the character development for Zuko's crew didn't get enough attention. They basically went from being Zuko's underlings who were only following orders, to becoming more of a second family of misfits whom understood one another. It's too bad that they were taken by Zhao for his invasion fleet.

We all knew Pakku would be one of their favorite characters

Sokka discovering the rizz in just being himself.

The water chambers are designed after the Panama Canal. It helps to protect the city from unwanted ships. Interlocking water canals are inspired by the waterways in Venice, Italy.

They have those on the Mississippi, too. It's actually cool to watch them do the whole process.

Katara doesn't have as many standout fights as Angg and Zuko but hers are some of the most enjoyable to watch. She probably has my favorite fight in the series actually.

The director was encouraged to add the moon in the background whenever possible.

There was no way Katara was gonna win against Pakku. But she did amazingly well, considering how short a time she's done it, and all self-taught. By the time she's his age, she'll likely be a better waterbender than he is now. (Edited for clarity/typo)

Chief Arnook is the leader of the Northern Water Tribe. He is not a waterbender, but was trained for many years as a warrior.

Perfect example of how to make an awesome, powerful female character tackling issues of sexism without destroying worldbuilding or making it unbelievable. You don't need to win a fight or be naturally superior to every other person in the world to make a change. All you need to do is to stand up for what's right with everything you've got.

Indeed. It wouldn't have been nearly as effective a lesson if she just suddenly beat up a master and was like: "Girl Power!". Instead it simply shows her passion and potential. Her standing up for what she believes in. Now obviously in real life we don't have bending, but US citizens have access to things that let you defend yourself just as well whether you are male or female.

I don't much understand Pakku. Why did he do a complete 180 on all of his cultural beliefs after realizing Katara was Kanna's granddaughter? He had already fought Katara and was impressed by her skill, but refused to teach her anyway. I can't imagine him just flipping on a dime to the other side after finding the necklace And a tangent, later on we find out that Pakku and Kanna got back together. Why? Kanna didn't love Pakku. She left her entire tribe and went to live at the literal opposite end of the world just to avoid Pakku and the tribe customs he followed. So why'd she get with him?

@@j0hn00 My reading: Pakku was deeply in love of Kanna and she likely did love him as well (though not as much and not without reservation). But she could not live a life in which she had no choice. She could never be confident in any feelings she had if she had never been allowed to freely explore them. So she left for a life in which she was free to choose. Pakku, losing the love of his life, had nothing left aside from his tribe and waterbending. He became fully dedicated to both, becoming the greatest waterbender of his people and holding the traditions and values of his tribe closer to his heart than anything (or anyone) else. Then, after all those years, seeing the necklace and realizing what had happened and why made him see that those traditions were themselves what had caused him to lose the love of his life and had been a source of pain and turmoil for her to the point that she was willing to leave behind everything she had known and loved. So, realizing the damage they had caused, he was willing to train Katara and let go of the problematic traditions of his people. Upon arriving in the South Pole, Kanna saw the understanding man he was rather than the bitter or ignorant people he had been (neither of which she could have loved). Then, between this, the mercy mission he was on to help rebuild their home, and their past relationship, their feelings were rekindled and they got married.

"without destroying worldbuilding or making it unbelievable" She goes on to master waterbending in, like, a day. Zuko still has the bruises he got in this episode's pirate attack when he shows up to capture Aang next episode. The show generally pays excellent attention to injury/physical appearance continuity (for example, you can see Zuko slowly losing muscle mass over the course of Book 2 as he wanders around the Earth Kingdom not having enough to eat, and then slowly bulking back up in Book 3 when he's no longer starving,) so the evidence implies that she went from being outclassed by Aang at waterbending to being good enough to be his teacher after a day or two of training. Almost all stories of this type have the characters learn implausibly quickly. You notice it more when female characters do it: it's not as common for them to be put in a position where the plot needs them to master a skill at impossible speeds. In a good story, you don't notice that the timescale is impossible because you're too invested in the characters, and you tend to give it more of a pass in stories you have nostalgia for.

@@Talisguy This comment was regarding this episode specifically, not future events. Katara, Aang, and (especially) Sokka all have training arcs that are implausibly quick due to the overall timeline of the show. I think explanations can be made for each if pressed but, yes, it does seem unrealistic. Still, it doesn't compromise the integrity of the story, doesn't convey bad messaging, and serves a good purpose to keep the plot moving. If Katara got a win in this episode, it would compromise the integrity of the story in making their journey to the Northern Water Tribe (the central goal of Book 1) pointless, I would argue the message conveyed would be bad, and it would not serve a particular purpose.

I need a couple of 'Uncle Iroh and the Hot Teas' concert tickets...yesterday.

When Zhao sees the blades on Zuko's wall, he takes one and swings it a few times to see if it's balanced as a real sword, or just a display piece. Next, he inspects the edge, to see if its sharp or not. A display piece would not have sharpened edges Zhao is smarter than a lot of people give him credit for. I think he should have gotten more screentime than he did, scenes that show his intelligence In the next couple episodes, he talks about visiting an ancient library and learning all about the moon spirits and such. In season 2, we find wan shi tong's spirit library, where the entire fire nation section is destroyed. Its a subtle detail, but Zhao managed to find the spirit library, study up on all the spirit lore, destroy the entire fire nation section so that anyone coming after him couldn't potentially find information on the fire nation, and then manages to escape wan shi tong's wrath unharmed He's a badass character that we're unfortunately only directly shown getting beaten by the more important characters

Zhao's not Ozai/Azula-smart, but yeah, he's often underrated in that department. The main thing that held him back was his temper.

One thing I love about avatar is how non-essentialist it is with the four nations. Instead of a simple "fire nation all bad, water nation all good" narrative, we spend some time seeing the bad side of the northern water tribe. Namely their patriarchal customs of arranged marriages and relegating women to healers. It adds some complexity and depth to the worldbuilding that I really enjoy, and without spoilers this trend will continue throughout the show.

The master is looking out for women, they're women.. they're specialty would be in nurturing. it's so irresponsible to just let them into war, unless they are that careful with their superpowers and have regular to super special dodge awareness or quick enough to make shields with superpowers, this applies to fictional stuff. But the women principal still stands. It's not bad at all, plus you women contradict it, "Let me join war", now it's.. "Wahh, I want out and protection" Also parents can know the difference between a Man from a Simp to have their daughter marry, or vice versa.

Many years ago, the Southern and the Northern Water Tribes were all the same people, and they lived at the North Pole together. But after some citizens were upset about the customs and rules, they left for the South Pole to start their own Water Tribe. Hence, the Southern and Northern Water Tribe.

Master Pakku was originally going to be designed after kung fu consultant Sifu Kisu. But they did use some of his personality to add to Pakku's character.

The symbol on the entrance represents the moon and the tides.

Unlike the Southern Water Tribe, in the Northern Water Tribe, there are waterbenders everywhere.

The water tribe was sexiest for at least 500 years during avatar Kyoshi and avatar Yangchen time. It didn’t come out of nowhere. We just didn’t know the history of the North.

I mean they made it pretty obvious; benders on the ships, in the town and the pupils performing with the master = all male. Yet we all tend to ignore this/didn't see it. It's truly telling something ^^

Katara has shown to be very gifted because of her ability to use her emotions with Waterbending (she's like a Saiyan in that regard). However she still can't "fight" worth a damn. It's a good thing Waterbending doesn't NEED one to be able to fight. On the flip side, Zuko makes up for his lack of Bending by being an excellent fighter. His inherent Martial Arts skills only help his Firebending.

7:14 ngl here aang has ALL of the bargaining power, like yeah it would technically be an abuse of his power, he is essentially using the world as a hostage but also what he is demanding is very easy, he's not demanding they teach all the woman, he's not demanding they change their culture, he is demanding they teach his one friend, i think if this exchange went public no matter how trad-pilled the city is there would be a very vocal protest to either get paku out or to force him because c'mon dude it's just one girl, saying no to his request after he threatens to not learn from you is pettier than using the world as a hostage at that point even if you think a woman learning combat water bending is like the biggest sin ever (which is pretty fking dumb) 14:40 but you know sort of kinda nepotism is more moving than having millions of deaths to your name

I like that they make Pakku a complicated character rather than a simple sexist or misogynistic (sexism and misogyny are not the same thing and sometimes exist together and sometimes do not) stereotype. I know I might anger some by saying this, but I think there was a reason that the Northern Water Tribe segregated its water benders by sex: To increase their population. Over 100 years of war, this might add up. They certainly seem to be doing far better than the more 'egalitarian' Southern Water Tribe, which is practically extinct, though I think it's possible the Southern Tribe has been raided and attacked alot more. Now, to be fair, the story is still rather dumb because 1) Katara is not a member of the tribe and it could justified to treat an 'outsider different and 2) Katara is with the Avatar and it is in the Northern Tribes interest, arguably to make an exception for her. So Pakku acting so stubborn in defense of Tradition in this particular case doesn't necessarily ring true. Still, overall a good story and it gave Pakku a bit of a small 'story arc' which is good characterization.

That’s a good theory, though I still like my headcanon a little bit more. Lol I always thought the somewhere in the distant past, there was a female water tribe avatar. That avatar apparently sucked so bad at water bending that it spawned a generational segregation where female benders could no longer fight in the Northern Tribe. 😂

I mean i can imagine that if I went to Pakistan and asked where I could get a nice cold beer there would be plenty of people judging me despite the fact I would clearly be an outsider. Some people are just more set in their ways than others. Plus it could be that pakku was upset with women in general after his fiance left him but maybe he softened up his attitude once he learned that kataras grandma kept the necklace all those years

One of the reason this show is as beloved as it is, is because of all the thought and planning that was put in to everything surrounding the main story. The mechanics of how the world works and how every nation has their element ingrained in to the very core of how their society works is exceptionally well thought out, even down to how people act and think as a reflection of their element. Since i know you have already seen it, im gonna repeat my favorite Iroh explanation: "Fire is the element of power. The people of the Fire Nation have desire and will, and the energy and drive to acheive what they want. Earth is the element of substance. The people of Earth Kingdom are diverse and strong, they are persistent and enduring. Air is the element of freedom. The Air Nomads detached themselfs from worldly concerns and found peace and freedom (also apparantly they had pretty good senses of humor). Water is element of change. The people of Water Tribe are capable of adapting to many things, they have a deep sense of community and love that holds them together through anything" Iroh simplified this in to a quick lesson but it summarises this world very succinctly and it begins to scratch the surface of how deep the lore is and how almost nothing is accidental. This functioning world was created first and then populated with characters that drive the story forward. To me this whole show is a masterpiece in storytelling and worldbuilding. The really cool part is that most of this isnt told through longwinded exposition, its shown organically through the story and environments.

While the show frames it in a way of injustice towards women, the harsh reality is that while the women are forced to not go to war, because they're a protected class, Men are forced to go to War, because they're considered expendable.

@@rainofkhandaq6678 I am not cut out to be a soldier. Neither are some men. That doesn't mean no women are. And women have been fighting for the right to do dangerous jobs, including combat and special forces roles in the military, for decades. Autonomy means allowing the women who DO want those roles to decide whether they should put their lives on the line for them, not for a panel of men to take that option away in the name of protection. We aren't children, babies, or puppies who require protection in the form of control, though that's essentially how the rules made and upheld by men treat us. The men in charge are the ones maintaining this status quo at the expense of other men, it's up to them to step back from that position of control. Women have been doing their part to seek that right for a long time, but patriarchy puts the power into the hands of men who would rather continue watching men die disproportionately rather than open the ranks. Take up your issues with them.

@@angelalurtz3638 Correction: a Small group of women fought got the right. Many didn't even fight for the right to vote because they didn't want to fight in wars. "Who require protection in the form of control" - the interesting thing is that there are many, many cases of women's bodies being destroyed on the inside from the physical stress of war. On top of that, women in general can't meet the requirements that have been given to men. The "Patriarchy" has allowed women to volunteer for these roles, and the only way to actually let them participate is to lower their requirements vs Men. So there are only two options, little to no women in these roles because they don't actually meet the requirements, or allow them in for less work than the Men need to accomplish, to be rewarded the same privileges.

No offense. But I don’t understand how I watched this as a kid and understood that the water bender wasn’t sexist, it was the tradition and culture of the tribe. And that in real life ancient civilizations practiced that too because war was a horror they thought women should never have to witness. Damn, maybe you still haven't understood the point of the episode, it wasn't 'Paku isn't sexist because Traditions and Cultures', it's literally that 'your archaic traditions and culture are inherently sexist'. Would you say women not allowed to drive or leave their home without a male in Middle Eastern countries isn't sexist because it's their 'Culture and Tradition' ?
