Makes me wonder if there’s a realizable form of nonpsychic combustion bending. We [haven’t actually seen but can infer] that with enough practice, training, experimentation, and refinement certain bending arts can be turned into a psychic bending form, as seen with Yakkone. In all likelihood he specifically was the inventor of psychic blood bending, though we don’t have much evidence or even content in that regard to make a case either way. So it’s entirely possible for other bending arts to be adapted for psychic bending, or vice versa. Sidebar I think Amon’s chi severing was actually developed not just from blood bending, but from healing as well. Likewise that meant that (except for avatar bullshit) the way to heal severed chi paths would specifically require the usage of blood bending based ‘healing’. The full art may also or instead use the knowledge of chi blocking, which we do see used by the equalizers. I think. It’s been years ok, I watch a lot of stuff and things can get buried. This is kinda nonsequiter to the first part of my comment. By the by, Yakkone’s psychic blood bending may not be a purely psionic bending form. Y’all are acquainted with the concept of phantom pain, right? A person feeling pain in a body part they no longer have, like an amputee having a sore elbow in the arm they lost. Pair that with the concept of the subtle body, which we technically know exist because of the usage of astral projection and the knowledge of spirits/souls existing, you can potentially develop the art of performing bending forms with just your subtle body while (trying to) keep your physical body still. One of the body’s senses is knowing/feeling where it’s parts are and the shape it’s in, so if you focus on the sensation of moving your body and the neuroimpulses involved in specific movements, you can recreate that movement with actually moving your material body. You’d get a bit stiff and potentially twitchy while doing this, as seen by psychic bloodbenders when they are blood bending. There’s even less textual evidence for this though than the other stuff, especially because this sort of “phantom” movement is something I discovered/developed myself, by myself. The groundwork is out there already, but nothing has been developed into using this specifically as a concept that I’ve seen. Also I never named it because I didn’t need to since I’ve never talked about this to anyone in a way where I’d need to call it anything. I’m using phantom because of how it is in part developed from the phenomenon of phantom pain, but any of you can come up with and use a better name for this lol.

It does make sense because combustion benders are able to fire bend using mind alone so doing it with fingers could work the same way

If pli was the incarnation RIGHT after sparky sparky boom man, she would be 71 when she died. Probably pli is 2 combustion benders after sparky sparky boom man because of the time periods and when sparky sparky boom man died.

I admit I always the thought the combustion bender tatou was actually a birthmark as part of the benders born ability but at least we can all agree the tatou has a different design depending on the gender.

Want to know the weird thing about this? In Smoke and Shadow, Azula had an ally that looked just like P’li and of course she is a Firebender. That could possibly be P’li’s grandmother and then gained dark spiritual powers which is known to be combustion-bending

So, exactly how many Avatars have there been? In Korra it's stated that it's been 10,000 years between Wan and Korra. We know of at least 9 named Avatars (Wan, Korra, Aang, and the 6 before him), but we're never given an exact number for the rest of them. Assuming that the humans in the world of Avatar live the same lifespan as humans in real life (around 80 years), there can't have been more then 125 Avatars. But, there are cases where some Avatars like Aang have lived a lot longer then that, so it could be even less the 100.

You have to take into account that these are ancient time and infant mortality is extremely common. There’s probably plenty of Avatar to have died in childbirth not to mention both Aang and Korra were hunted as children so it’s also very likely many were killed while young. Then there’s cases like Kuruk where he dies at 33 and cases like Kyoshi where she dies at 230. Even in the image we get of all time past Avatar when Korra gets her bending back, we in some instances see elements missing in the cycle which suggests that some Avatar died before becoming fully realized and showing up as past lives.

Combustion Benders are somewhat familiar to AirBenders. What if sub-bending has a connection to your bloodline. For example Bolin lava-bending. His dad was an Earthbender and his mother was a firebender. Earth+Fire= Lava. So what if combustion benders have Fire and Air bloodline. That might be the connection to their fire bending and their spiritual connection with the Air nation?

Combustion busters

I think that combustion bending revolves around the heat in the head. Seeing as the heat comes mostly out of the head, trained firebenders can manipulate it and form the energies of that heat into the explosive blast they shoot out. The third eye is just painted on as a focal point for the bender to focus their energy before shooting the beam out.

A few things with this theory. The initial combustion "avatar" would've needed to touch the spirit portal while "possessed" during Harmonic Convergence. Without that happening the spirit would mearly kill the host sometimes after transforming them. Without this, the possibility of combustion bending being 1/2 energy/spirit bending is closer to nonexistent. Now combustion bending could rather be a mix of fire and air bending (similar to lightning.) The reason for this is because you need oxygen in order to have an explosion, as without air, a spark likely couldn't even be produced. Oxygen in its purest state is also one of the highest combustible elements and can create massive amounts of damage. If combustion bending is part air bending, then that type of bender can control almost exactly how much oxygen is being ignited (so as to not set the whole atmosphere ablaze) and effectively make it seem like a "spontaneous" combustion.

@@Eric-py8yy that wasn’t really combustion bending because lightning bending causes explosions as seen when Zuko reflected lightning back at Ozai so what really happened is that his lightning bending failed and caused a short lightning beam which exploded early instead of on contact due to his inner turmoil

I could’ve sworn that someone in the show said that combustion bending was a rare mutation of fire bending??? Maybe it’s like lava bending where a fire and earth bender can make a lava bender so what if an air bender and fire bender makes a combustion bender considering it requires spiritual energy. That’s just my guess cause I doubt that there was any type radiation in the atla universe to actually cause the mutation or fire benders interbreeding with air bender during the 100 year war.

I just found this channel as I was rewatching avatar, can confirm they do this all the time and it's always a theory that has a few big holes in it.

If u look at raava and vaatu's design, u can see that there's a diamond shaped eye on their forehead. I know vaatu can't be the spirit for combustion benders but what if their are others like them?

My guess is that it is a dangerous and rare skill, not something you are born with. The tattoos might simply help the combustion bender focus better, or a mark of mastery like airbending tattoos. Unlike the airbenders, there isn't any religious or cultural reason to learn this. The tattoos are also unique to the bender, while still having the eye motif. Sozin did wipe out a lot of history of the fire nation, and combustionbenders could simply be reviving an ancient technique or skill

Combustion may be an obscure technique that can be learned. Remember what happened when Zuko tried lighting? He created an explosion. At close range and not very powerful but an explosion. Maybe with training and the weird tattoo to focus energy in that chakra, it's posible to learn it.

cool theory... I have my own theory also which is based on bloodlines... i got this when i saw who are the family of Bolin which consisted of fire benders and earth benders...which led me to a conclusion of combustion benders being an offspring of air nomads and fire benders

Hmmm. While I'm not fully on board, this is probably you're best Avatar theory. It's possible that reincarnation is a thing for everyone but the Avatar is the easiest to track across lifetimes. However, I don't believe that a spirit is involved. I believe it can be taught but similar to blood bending, the amount of teachers are scarce. Some people are naturals like combustion man and Pli. However, they may still enroll in secret assassin schools for those specific skills like The League of Assassins. Another reason against a spirit-involved reincarnation is Pli ability to regularly fire bend. Combustion Man was never shown with this ability to bend fire like other fire benders. That tattoo is most likely a graduation mark like air benders get but from a secret school or secret teacher

P'lis explosions are much smaller but more accurate and can be redirected, I think that her tattoos design reflects that. Combustion man's tattoo is more ridged and with thick lines because his explosions are bigger and travel in a straight line. Imagine what kind of different qualities would come along with the ability depending on the design of the tattoo

in the first season in one of the episodes you can see how air and fire created combustion, so maybe someone did like Wan but only got air and fire instead of all the four, and merged with a spirit, and after a while he discovered the ability to combustion bend, and after few lives he could fire bend and combustion bend, but the ability to bend just the air was gone. this is my theory :)

I always believed Combustion -Bending was the combo Fire and Air-bending .... Like how a lava-bending seems to be Rooted in Earth-Bending, with inert fire-bending genes.... Perhaps not all Air-benders were Celebate, or those that were born Non-Airbenders, perhaps were sent out into the World, leaving the Airbender gene Recessive
