I'm a Seattle native and have skied at Stevens Pass probably since before I could walk. I am very saddened to see this news. My heart goes out to their families of John, Jim, and Chris, and hope they are skiing infinite fields of pow-pow in the afterlife.

I was at Stevenspass that day riding, I swear to God my thoughts that day after riding a little “slack country” powder was that the snow was weird that day. There was a dense layer slightly icy on top of the powder. I heard about the situation that happened the next day and I felt terrible.

The warm weather in the previous week may have lead to some surface melting which can later freeze to form an icy base surface which was later covered with the recent fresh snow. Is so that would be a condition known to increase avalanche risk. People can reduce the risk by staying away from slopes steeper than 30 degrees if there is an elevated risk condition. I can barely imagine what it would be like to be caught in an avalanche. More could be done about this, worldwide.

Meg Oliver: "could have been even deadlier....device that inflates to provide some air to breathe if they are buried in snow". Wrong. It's an airbag that provides buoyancy, not 'air to breathe'. RIP to those guys that didn't make it.

Anybody can keep on skiing/snowboarding inbounds or in the BACKCOUNTRY as long as people go by the book... also when in the BACKCOUNTRY, it's anywhere between "Intermediate to Double Black Diamond in a instant,(there is no easy way down per say.)
