Painting day at the vinyl village garage!! Finally going to put the shine on the great pumpkin. Going back to the original color, Autumn Bronze! Wow does this color highlight the body lines. This part was a lot of work getting here and now it will show why all the time was invested.

As a painter in a body shop, I commend you for doing your own work, especially in a home garage! However, invest in a good spray gun, and you will get even better results!!! Last suggestion, Pull your door down onto a fan, and block the space beside the fan with some plywood or something, and you’ll get much cleaner results as well. I’ve sprayed many many vehicles in places like this, so I’ve learned the tips & tricks on painting in a shop that’s not ideal… 😂 Great Job!!!

No problem Sir, You earned my Sub! I have them all, and I could tell you which are good spray guns and which that aren’t. However, You’ll have to pick one that suits you best. Tell ya what.. I’d be glad to send you a few to test out and see how you like them and then you could send them back to me! If I were you, The first spray gun I would purchase is the Ani F-160! Everyone needs a good budget gun, and the F-160 is unbelievably priced at under $150 Non digital, and around $250 for the digital, and they perform better than 75% of the guns I have that were in the $700-$800+ range. I’m not sponsored by them in any way, Just sharing my experiences with them all. They have a premium gun that’s super nice & sprays great, But the F-160 is unbeatable in that price range… Lmk Sir, I’ll be glad to help out any way I can! I may sell, or possibly even give you one of my older guns!!! Take care Sir!!! P.S. Funny I ran across this video, Because there’s an Original, Orange 68 Firebird sitting behind a house near us that’s been sitting there for many years just going to waste… I tried to buy it years ago but they just weren’t quite ready to sell it then…

Car looks good i have done many cars a run is to be expected at some point. I was taught you walk a fine line with runs if putting on paint correctly. One tip not a criticism when doing vinyl roof cars always paint the roof just like the rest of the car. This gives you one more barrier to avoid rust, the factory didn't that's why vinyl roof cars develop rusty roofs. Good color choice though love the color.

I just stumbled on your channel after a long search on how to restore a classic car with zero experience. I'll try to make a long story short. My knowledge of working on cars is very limited. Years ago, my dad bought a rundown 1968 Firebird convertible. Very rusty, bad shape, & not running (400 engine, not original, & frozen). He was going to teach me how to work on cars by working together on it. But then he passed. It's a bittersweet inheritance. I have no knowledge of what I'm doing, & no longer have his guidance, but I'm determined to see this through. I just don't know where to begin. Your videos appear to be exactly what I need. You have so many videos, & they look like they'll be gems guiding me through this process, but I honestly don't know which video I should start with (& an order to follow) to begin this project. I can't emphasize enough what an absolute beginner that I am & would appreciate any suggestions you have on order of viewing. Thank you so much for providing these videos!

The sentimental value alone makes it worth while to try for sure, sorry for your loss of course. You have a great car to build plus there is so much aftermarket support for the 1968 Firebird so that makes it easier to build. So where to start maybe The play list for the Great pumpkin which is a 1968 Firebird coupe would be a good place to start. I did probably 80% of that build all on KZread so it will cover a lot of the process. Now the current build Is a convertible so it will show you a little more on that part once you get to that part.

Nice job, looks fantastic. I am amazed you get such great results in your garage with the door open. I get so much "stuff" in my clear spraying in my garage. I need to upgrade my home built booth to some type of filtered down draft air flow. I used to be the king of runs and hated them and the fixing process. I recently upgraded to a DV1 clear gun with the C1 & C2 caps and it was night and day difference for my novice skills with my cheaper gun. The C2 cap is the one to use. Sure that $750 eBay price was a bit steep, but the result is pretty amazing even when I think I am putting on too much and will surely get a run. It just flows out smooth with a factory peel look. No buyer's remorse. Easy to cut and polish for the smooth as glass look for your pretty birds. I hope the pumpkin finds a great home when you are done and look forward to your next project.

@@VinylVillageGarage I sprayed it primer black and then 2 coats of flat black and it actually looked pretty good. $3 x 40 cans = $120 paint job. Earl Scheib was charging $700 at the time and their paint was only slightly better quality. The body was straight so that helped.

That GTO in the driveway is going to be covered in overspray....

Yup it’s had about 3 paint jobs worth of over spray.

It’s in line to get restored
How did you not get any overspray on the GTO? it is so close and it looks like clouds of overspray are going right over it.

It’s covered in overspray from the last few cars I did. That car looks decent from a distance but needs a refresh and plan to do it soon on the KZreads
looks tidy as well done. are you using any kind of fans or extraction
@VinylVillageGarage

No fans, the sealer and base sprays with almost no over spray. The clear is a little tricky. Next car I might build in a way to Evacuate the clear when done
Looks great! 😎🤘 I had a quick question about your wheels that you restored before this. How many cans of each color of paint and primer did you have to buy to do all four wheels? Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 😎🤘

I used two cans of silver and one can of Greg. I also painted the inside and backside of the rims silver so it used more,
Awesome job Jon! I think you may have inspired me to try painting the GTO I'm restoring in my garage. How much paint and clear did you need? What brand of paint did you use?
@VinylVillageGarage

Typically 1 gallon of color that needs reduced and same with the clear will do an entire car Jambs and inside the trunk lid. I use PPG products. Spend a few More dollars but it hasn’t let me down
OMGGGGGG!! I WAS HURTING LOOKING AT THE JUDGE TAKING ALL THAT SPRAY DUST. 😮😮😮 I usually paint in my garage and park my cars way far so I don't have to clay them later. Still get spray dust😡.. Is the Judge OK??

Well yes overspray goes everywhere, I had the miss’s take her new Malibu out for the day. The gto is actually in line for a refresh. It looks ok from 20 feet but it needs some love.
great garage job. how much overspray did you get on the GTO

Lots of overspray actually it has a couple cars worth now. I finished that car 20 years ago. It has held up Well considering the heck I put it thru. I have plans and it is line to get a redo again.
Great job. Thanks for sharing. Did you have any issues with overspray on the GTO parked outside?

Yup sure did. That car looks decent on camera but it’s been sitting outside for Over 6 years and needs to be redone. It’s last restoration was 22 years ago

@@VinylVillageGarageThat's good to know. I'll make sure I clear my driveway before spraying. I like the simplicity of just spraying in an open garage, but I'm thinking to use a couple box fans for exhaust with filters in front of them to collect over spray and keep air moving.
Beautiful job. Great video series, Jon. It just proves that it can be done. Advanced prep and thorough planning has paid off. One question- I see you didn’t cover your daily drivers and the GTO? No concerns of over spray? It looks like the inside surface of the garage door has developed a permanent Autumn Bronze tint as a reminder of this project 👍👍

Over spray is all over the GTO I am not Concerned about it, it needs a refresh so this just gives me another reason to do so. Now the miss’s 2022 mailbu you don’t see because I didn’t want to mess it up. I did just take a week off and went to South Carolina for a visit. I am ready to get back to playing cars

I agree best to move Anything you don’t want overspray on. You don’t see the wife’s new Malibu for that reason. The gto looks ok but it’s in desperate need of a Redo. I did that car 20 years ago and the paint looks decent but the body work well let’s say 20 years of experience I can do a lot better this time
Every time you wash the car your slowly removing paint .Looks great .Less is more sometimes ?
