Guys, use a garden hose. Not a pressure washer. The engine is designed to withstand rain and can handle a light rinse in most areas but pressure washing will force water where it shouldn’t be and especially when it comes to connectors that have wear and tear, you could easily get water in connectors and short circuit or cause corrosion.

I agree. These engines are not really even dirty. My old truck has never had the engine cleaned and it bugs me. This stuff looks like a good starter product with another wash with a soap based product to get rid of the oily coating which is only going to attract dirt.

I have a ‘05 Yukon XL Denali with the Vortec 6.0. It has close to 315,000 miles on it. It’s never been thoroughly cleaned. I have an oil leak somewhere and the build up is pretty thick. What is the best way to clean this engine, including plug areas without damaging the compartment? I once cleaned my wife’s Lexus SC 400 the way I always clean and had to replace the coil. So I’m gun shy now.

Hey, Scott big fan. I have a few questions. 1- if it has a petroleum base to it would that cause issues with the alternator and wouldn't it lead to grime sticking to it in the future? 2- If I have a 97 ranger and I'm not sure how the seals are doing for the electrical components would it be a good idea to cover them just to be safe? and a side note: I had an idea you knew how to work on cars because I remember watching another video about engine bay detailing where you talked about the brush assembly in the alternator and I knew if you could talk with confidence on that I had a feeling you worked on cars. Love the videos Scott, don't let these trolls get to you man!

If you get enough inside it, I would think so. Anyone who has worked on cars for a while knows that any type of oil leaking into an alternator will kill it prematurely. I wouldn't worry about clean water though, everything under the hood is designed to be pretty water resistant since the engine compartment obviously isn't close to water tight. Of course if something has been modified or there's deteriorated seals, hoses, spark plug wires, etc you could have problems from water including just driving through normal rain and puddles.

It’s funny. I was a detailer for years at a dealership in Daytona Beach. It was the mid 90’s, and the following is how we did an engine compartment. Soak the whole car, spray the under side of the hood and engine with full strength degreaser and pressure wash the under side of the hood and engine . We then took a water based protectant and sprayed everything down. Not saying that is proper, but it looked dynamite and I never ever had a problem. Not once. I didn’t invent that, it was shown to me by the dealership.

I have used it on my Sister in laws car. I was replacing her water pump for her and she bought a few cans of that crap because I told her that I would have to clean the engine before working on it because it was so nasty due ongoing oil leaks. It cut the light grease and grime on the upper engine compartment area, but the actual grease and sludge on the engine, it did NOTHING but create a horrible smell. I ended up getting it clean with LA AWESOME

I just used it and it definitely gets rid of any grease or oil. My 18 year old car hasn’t been cleaned and it did a pretty good job and I didn’t have to brush much and it still did pretty good. I also maybe waited about 5 minutes for some parts and it still got it cleaned. I will admit the smell is extremely strong even when using a mask. I would recommend honestly just scrubbing what you want extremely clean and anything else leave it alone. I would give it 4 if 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Scott, you know what you are doing. Back in the day, 44 years ago, I washed engines in the wishy wash bays, and I covered nothing. No problems except for starting old points ignition (every car made for the time and untill 1975) which was made possible by spraying with wd40. Yeah, that was new then. I really don't care anymore about super clean engine cleanliness because I'm older and have many worse things to worry about. I would worry about the proliferation of electronic devices these days being wetted than other parts in the bay. You might have problems if they aren't sealed from water.

I wonder how many sensors and electrical components he had to replace. You can get an engine wet just not that wet. Thats over doing it, that power that that power washer has can easily get into sensors.

I'm selling a 2005 Toyota Corolla and I'm planning to clean the engine with the Auto Zone product. What I'm concerned about is not covering the alternator.

I love your videos, but if you're going to test a product, why wouldn't you follow the directions on the product? If you agitate the product and don't let it sit for 10mins how do we know if it works or not?

Has anyone by any chance accidentally spray engine degreaser on the carpeting to your vehicle? I can't get rid of the smell and I've tried everything as far as cleaning it myself with tide, dawn, Lysol, downy softner and odorban.

The main active ingredient of many effective degreasers is just KOH aka potassium hydroxide, an ionic salt that when dissolved in a degreasing solution is odourless. Heck, in my part if the world Meguiars super degreaser and Super clean are hard to get and expensive, but the locally produced cheaper 4L concentrate uses the same KOH based chemistry, so I've had no problems so far and it has cleaned my engine bays and wheels effectively. Why do I have a bad feeling that this product is nothing but kerosine mixed with maybe some detergents and other solvents?

Can we use car wash soap for regular engine. It smells good. I just want to wash off dirt and to look clean I do not have any grease on my engine. Soon I will try car wash soap. I have pressure washer from harbor freight which I will use for this
