    One reason for Åland being a part of Finland is also that there is an archipelago which connects it to the Finnish mainland. There is almost only open sea between Åland and Sweden.

    3:10 You've made a major historical mistake. Finland was never a part of USSR (which is important for us in Finland), since Finland became independent in 1917, and Soviet Union was founded in 1922. The October Revolution was slightly before Finland declared independence, but the state called "USSR" wasn't found before 1922. Before that there was a Soviet Russia, which in the beginning struggled of the sovereignity with Russian Provisional Government, which had come into power in the February Revolution. Also, the borders were different back then, you are using the post WW II borders before they existed. Also the borders or Kalmar Union are anachronistic.

    This is slightly pedantic - but it is true that Finland was never part of the USSR, but rather of the Tsarist Russian Empire as was. This may also explain (I'm not sure) why Finland is the only Scandinavian country to be a republic not a kingdom.

  • @patrickuotinen

    @patrickuotinen

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@markgourley910 It is not pedantic, for us it is very important, that we have never been part of Soviet Union. It is also the truth. Finland is not Scandinavian, but it is Nordic. Iceland, also a Noric country, is alsoa republic. As for why Finland isn't a kingdom, when it became independent, it didn't have a king. Monarchists and Republicans competed as should it become a monarchy or a republic, and with a temporary majority in the parliament, the monarchists chose Friedrich Karl of Hesse-Kassel from Germany to be the king, but as the First World War soon ended to the loss of the Central Powers, Friedrich Karl abdicated before he was installed, at request, and so Finland became a republic.

    Literally every subdivision of Spain is called an "Autonomous Region" (or "Autonomous Community") according to the Spanish Constitution. There are 16 of these Autonomous Communities plus the "Chartered Community" of Navarre and the two "Autonomous Cities" of Ceuta and Melilla. In addition to this, the Spanish Constitution recognises the following nationalities: Andalusian, Aragonese, Balearic, Basque, Canarian, Catalan, Galician and Valencian.

    6:47 The thing about Denmark-Norway is that Norway was a separate kingdom in a personal union with Denmark (same king, different goverments, laws, succession laws etc) for most of its history, the Faero islands etc was a part of the *Norwegian* kingdom. As for those wars... There was more then one war, but the way I remember it Denmark-Norway didn't truly join till the UK violated Denmark-Norways neutrality and attacked Caupenhagen, stealing most of the dual kingdoms navy... So it wasn't really Sweden that declared war on us, but rather they took advantage of the situation to start a new war with their arch nemesis the Danes on the same side as the quite powerfull Brits... Then there was Bernadotte...

    Many autonomous regions have their own football federation and they play in qualifications for World Cup and own federation's championships. For example Faroese team does that in UEFA, but Åland doesn't. Their players represent team Finland. The best club team in Åland is IFK Mariehamn, which plays in Finnish top tier league Veikkausliiga. In 2016 they won and became champions.

    Aland was always part of the province of Abo (Turku) which is in Finland and it is on the same land mass as that of Finland. Many people on the Finnish mainland have spoken Swedish for centuries. Even the name Aland derives fromm an ancient Finnish word.

  • @pontuxdanex

    the name Åland does not derive from finnish. It has a complete different meaning in finnish (ahvenanmaa) Which translates directly to perchland and Åland translates to Riverland roughly. Not to mention that Åland was swedish several hundred years before finland became swedish. And at that time Åland belonged to Uppland in Sweden. Please stop spreading false history.

  • @weepingscorpion8739

    @weepingscorpion8739

    Well, I thought Ahvenanmaa was adapted straight from the Proto-Norse or Proto-Germanic form of Åland which would be something like *Ahwolanda, the word å being a cognate to Latin aqua. But either way works, I guess.

    Åland was part of Sweden since the 12th century. Made absolutely no sense why Åland would belong to Finland. With that being said, most Ålanders don't mind Finland today and will probably never leave.

    That was not the reason for the joining of the crowns and the formation of the united kingdom. Scotland was bankrupted after trying to build what is now known as the Panama canal. The Lords of Scotland were offered money, land and titles to sign the Act of Union, which they did, betraying both the Lowland Scots and Highland Scots. Most clans refused to sign, it was mostly only the Lords located around Fife that signed over Scotlands independence. Thankfully Scotland will be independent soon enough, as will Wales.
