Never seen this before. After trying it, it works pretty darn good. It's entire purpose is for IT to hold the tension in the rope so YOU don't have to. Most people know they lose some tension when 'pinching' the line and then trying to tie it off. You CAN also avoid the pinching thing by tying a regular Trucker's hitch then simply going back down and around the anchor with a Round Turn and Two Half-Hitches. The round turn holds all the tension and leaves your two hands free. But your little 'trick' is pretty good and don't know why I've never seen it before. (btw I would still secure it with half-hitches just to be on the safe side).

I have used this not for 50 years and never once had it fail. Here's a tip, when you put the tag end through the loop, pinch with you thumb and index finger to hold it while you make the first knot you showed. It is amazing the amount of strength you can hold with just your thumb and index finger. Love your jig, looks like it would work great. Also love your going around the loop twice and how easy it releases when you want it to. Great video, should help a lot of people.

My first instinct was, what a great idea! Then I tried it a few times with a rope.... Remember that loads will shift in a truck so your rope may often go slack for a few hours after the truck hits a bump, and the guy in the cab won't necessarily notice. If you let tension off this knot, it can come undone completely! So, for critical application it needs a slipped overhand loop at the end so it can't come undone when tension is off. As shown, this knot would be great for a tarp or a tent where tension will be consistent and where the implications of a disconnect are innocent enough. And you've got a great solution to my frustration about reaching up a tree to tighten the knot in an awkward position, only to lose tension as I complete the knot. But for a trucker's hitch, this one needs a failsafe backup knot so that your load doesn't become a missile that could hit oncoming traffic.

I like how the extra loop holds the tension while tightening, instead of having to pinch, have not seen that one, so for that reason I'm liking, subscribing and commenting. However, for an actual trucking situation, I think it needs to be followed up with the traditional slip knot at the end, to keep the 'blackwall hitch' from coming loose under road vibration.

This is so awesome! Also instead of an Alpine Butterfly for the top loop you could use a slip loop I think it's called but it's tied the exact same way as a marline spike hitch but you pull the loop in the direction opposite of how you would pull it when tying it to use for a marline spike. So you'll need to tie it flipped to use the slip loop for a truckers hitch. So when the truckers hitch is untied it all comes out. But I guess if the line is always used for a truckers hitch keeping a fixed loop could be desired.

When I was 17 I used to load and tie down stacks and stacks of 100 and 150 lb bags of drilling mud on the backs of flatbed trailers after school and on Saturdays. It was 1977 and there were no ratchet straps yet. We used rope only with these knots to tie down 70 mph truckloads. We weren't smart enough to figure out that 2nd pass through the loop. We made a 2nd loop altogether. By passing the rope through this 2nd loop and pulling just like the first one, it acted like a tensioner. Pull one then pull the other and it took up the slack. I always thought that was genius.

Just secured my Marquee using this method. I've known the Truckers hitch for a good ten years, always struggled with the last minute tensioning. Especially with slippery paracaord and Plastic ropes. This is a game changer. We had mad winds today which broke one of the Marquees poles (that might have been me a bit too...it was chaotic). I just went all around the marquee with paracord guylines and large stakes and managed to get the tension so tight I could play a note on the guys. Awesome method. This would be useful also if you had to operate one handed...as I may have to do so in the foreseeable future or as you may have to in any emergency. Could even be useful as a Tourniquet tying option.

That's brilliant !! Never thought about adding another loop, such much easier than trying to pinch it and tie it

I’ve been looking for this for SO long I knew there was a way you didn’t have to pinch the knot! I just couldn’t remember how to do it!
