Very interesting. Could you build that into a car, truck and would it actually change to the lower gear if the truck suddenly got put under strain then change back to the higher gear automatically when the truck lost the strain? By that, i mean by going up hill with weight would it change down then change back to higher gear once on level ground again

@@1plaintext Just some basic lego vehicle would do. Jimmy the gearbox and motor onto it, test it and see what happens. In theory, it should work going by your already trial run.

that’s literally how these work though. some transmissions are built to switch at higher/lower resistances though. Really just comes down to if they can handle the power of motors

worm gear = genius. However, can you explain a bit more how it selects hear ratio please. I saw the locking mech, and next it was freely moving.. puzzled! but very interesting 👍🍺🇬🇧

Thanks so much. It is selected by the planetary gear set. At low load, gear train friction "locks" the ring gear, the input drives the sun gear, and thus transmits power through the (tan color) side gears of the differential; when output torque is not enough, the sun gear locks up and the input drives the ring gear of the planetary gear set, and transmits power through the ring (casing) of the differential. The second test shows this switching in action, the first test shows the benefit of allowing this gear switch. Thanks for watching!

@@1plaintext Am I completely mistaken if I think the locking of the low gear (barring locking it out directly) is mostly handled by the worm gear itself? Since force can not be effectively transferred from the Differential case through the worm gear back to the planetary, this prevents the differential from moving, which, if I understand my engineering correctly (please let me know if I'm wrong) is required for a differential box to work as a transmission?

One thing that I did not mention in the video was, there is a ratchet between the sun gear and the differential; at low gear, the ratchet "locks" the sun gear because for the differential to output through the sun gear side, it would be turning in the opposite direction. At high gear, the worm gear does prevent the casing from turning, but I suspect that is not a requirement because this is also set up in a way that friction in the low gear train is enough to direct power through the high gear train.

interesting but the difference in speed between the 2 gears is too high. This would be more useful if you did not use a worm gear IMO

Спасибо за просмотр. Суть в том, чтобы разрешить автоматическое переключение на более низкое передаточное число, чтобы двигатель мог справиться с нагрузкой, с которой он не может справиться иначе (как это было в первом испытании). Надеюсь, по крайней мере, часть замедления связана с тем, что он передает мощность при более низком передаточном числе (больше крутящего момента).
