I think you're missing an idler pulley for the air conditioner. If you ever decide to hook the a/c back up you'll have belt slap with that missing.

Is that secondary dampener supposed to go all the way into the bore? My carb is a later one with the spring, but the piston binds up about halfway down - where the top of the "piston" is about level with the top of the notch in the bore. The bore is clean. Can I sand the piston a bit to get it to drop more?

The dampener was stuck when I tore it down. It was difficult to get the top of the carb off due to this. You are correct, even after a good soaking, it did not want to properly slide into the chamber. I cleaned the piston really good with a green scratch pad. I took a piece of light emery sandpaper to the chamber. Rolled it like a cigar and worked it in a circular motion in the chamber. Make sure you clean it good before reassembly. I also used a little WD40 on the dampener piston to help the assembly. Hope this helps. Best wishes and thanks for watching!

Why do all ford v8s have that exhaust manifold leak? Do the castings crack over time or what?

Great question! Answer that question, fix the problem and you will make millions! You would think it is the gasket but they are pretty much all the same material. I have seen everything from broken studs to cracked exhaust manifolds. I wonder if the exhaust temp is higher on a Ford??
