funkypharaoh See our Muslim civilization in Africa before Europe knew about civilization. Mali (officially Republic of Mali) Present-day Mali was once part of three West African empires that controlled trans-Saharan trade: the Ghana Empire , the Mali Empire , and the Songhai Empire. During its golden age, there was a flourishing of mathematics, astronomy, literature, and art. At its peak in 1300, the Mali Empire covered an area about twice the size of modern-day France and stretched to the west coast of Africa. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oaOtstOxdtKYh5s.html

I didn’t think this would be as emotional as it is, but the manuscript of this brother writing what he could and the Quran, and prayer for the future was what he could remember was beautiful. I can assure you with 100% accuracy as someone who used to read Arabic and have forgotten most of it you peace together what you know. His heart was in the correct place, in service to Allah. I was taught the words mean nothing without the heart. What we have here is a Muslim telling his story and praying. Thank you. May Allah bless you for your continued pursuit of knowledge. May Allah bless you and your family

Salam.I m from senegal, I lived in the US for many years before resettling back home, and I have people from fouta toro in my ancestry.I watched several videos on Sheikh omar ibn said and I read the book a while back.I m glad that you made certain clarifications as a Muslima and a seeker. Indeed this brother lived as a Muslim and died as a Muslim, having to strategize and cope in the midst of his enemies and oppressors. I really wanted to touch on his origins in futa toro which are misunderstood even for present day Senegalese people. Fouta toro is an area where the mali empire (12th-15th century),the songhai empire(14th-16th) and the wolof empire(14 th-16th) overlapped.its people are called tukulor and halpular.tukulor aka tekrouri from the ancient kingdom of tekrour (8th-12th)in Central present day Mauritania.and halpular meaning "those who speak pular".pular meaning also fulani.I ll explain. Tekrour was inhabited by the sereers and fulanis tribes under the soninke tribe-a mandinka/mandingo subgroup.they coexisted and mixed to a certain extend over a 1000 years until the 12 th century.from that mixture will come the people of futa toro and the wolof of senegal. in the 12th century the soninke converted in mass and joined the berber/almoravids to invade Spain where the term "moors".no wonder some of Omar Ibn Said enslavers called him "moor".whereas the sereer and the fulanis refused conversion and migrated massively south along and across the senegal River into senegal, and south on the northern bank of the river respectively.remember there is already some mixed elements and that the river is not a physical barrier. subsequently, there will be more black migrations south from tekrour due to waves of Arab and morrocans invaders in the next centuries. In fouta toro the sereer and the fulanis kept on mixing across the 2 banks of the river along with the mandingo/mandinka groups.400 years later around 1550 koli tengalla a fulani prince raised an army and defeated the songhai empire.he created a fulani kingdom the great fouta englobing "fouta" toro and "fouta" djallon in northern guinea. Under the fulani hegemony fulani/poular became the "official"language where the term halpular.between 1550 and 1776 the fulani culture and language infused with the other languages and groups created a melting pot called the tukulors inhabitants of fouta toro.needless to say that from the 12th in Tekrour to 1776 Islam continued to trickle in. And by the 15th and 16th most people in fouta were Muslim. in 1776 there was an Islamic revolution concocted in Coki in middle senegal by students and scholars from fouta toro against the remnants of the fulani aristocracy ,and an theocratic state was created under thierno suleyman Baal and the Torobe ie inhabitants of toro. Fouta toro broke away from fouta djallon. however, it was still surrounded by the mandingos in the east and the wolof in the west.those later states had large populations of Muslims.however, they were tolerant and coexisted with pagans and animists.due to the momentum of the revolution The leaders of fouta toro called for jihad against their neighbors and, fuelled by the Europeans and the slave trade, chaos spread across the land. Endless fightings went on back and forth, an prisonners on all sides were sold into slavery. Unfortunately it is soon after that Omar ibn Said was captured and deported to the Americas. He was from a place where Islam was part of the fabric for 600 years.it was part of his culture and his identity.we salute him and honor his memory. He is a cornerstone of American and Senegalese culture. "Which sign of your lord will you deny?" Jazakallahu khayran

السلام عليكم و جزاك الله Thanks sister for this clarification This very instructed scholar in Islam would never replace TAWHID for trinity belief (it just doesn't make sense) but as he said we do not blame him if he had to show to his "master" some "signs" so that it would ease and soften his journey as a slave he was surely aware of surat Nahl 16 verse 106 ...إلا من أكره و قلبه مطمئن بالإيمان... ...Except under compultion and his heart remaining firm in Faith... We pray for our brother Omar ibn Said May Allah forgive all his sins and replace all his suffering in this world into great joy in paradise with prophet Muhammad and the ones Upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those companions Amin...

Masha'Allah sister, great review!!! I sometimes get so frustrated that we are never taught these stories in school, or that movies aren't made about our Muslim brothers and sisters who struggled and made huge impressions in history, only because it is not the trend to see Muslims in a softer light. The Internet now, if we use it for good, helps us discover all these treasures in our history and I am so thankful to Allah that He Preserves that which He Wills for those lucky enough to come across it. We are put on this Earth to Worship Our Creator, and to be tested with hardship, and I ask Allah to reward our brother Omar ibn Said with Jannah for his struggles, and all Muslims who die as believers. His story also reminds us why it is so important to memorize the Qu'ran. We never know what will happen to our physical copies, and no one can take the Qu'ran from our hearts when Allah Wishes to protect it for us.

Thank you so much for sharing a lot of information in this video about Omar ibn Said. I read some of his writings and I thought it was interesting that he wrote a lot about and from the Quran and Islam and only a little about Christianity. Also the fact that he constantly linked Christianity to the violation and the cruelty that he experienced made me question what they said about his conversion. Lastly, when he described the way the masters would read to him from the bible, and him saying that they would read to him OFTEN, shows that there was a lot of pressure placed on him to convert. I truly appreciate you for doing this review and shedding the light on his writings, may Allah bless you sister. And may Allah grants Omar Ibn Said Al-jannah and all of us, Ameen. Thank you so much again.

confirming this wonderful concept of equality in Islam, prophet Muhammad, in his last Sermon, Said O people, Your God is one and your father is one. You are all from Adam and Adam is from dust, An Arab is not Superior to a non-Arab, and a non-Arab is not superior to an Arab A white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have superiority over a white. You are all equal. Nobody has superiority over others except through piety and good action

Jazaaka Allah sister, we appreciate the time you took to bring clarity about the life and legacy of Omar Ibn Sayiid. I had the same concern when I came first across his story and it was mentioned he converted to christianity; I never believed it, never seen any solid arguments that proved it. In Fayetteville North Carolina there is a Masjid called Omar Ibn Sayiid. I appreciate the clarification you brought about the Arabic/English translation. The story of Omar Ibn Sayiid touched me deeply as I am black muslim from Senegal and been living in the states for years. As for the African language he might have spoken since you mentioned it ,my guess is he spoke Fulani also known as Peul which is one the predominant language in Futa Tooro the area where Sayyid was from. He might as well spoke wolof which is the mostly spoken language in Senegal. In addition I wanted to add that wolof and fulani as well as other African languages were written back then using the Arabic alphabet. Anyway I am glad you brought some light to the story of the great Omar Ibn Sayiid aka Uncle Moroh aka Prince Umaruh. Thank you so much sister.

Sister, I am watching you from Mauritania west Africa, and with all due respect I would like to clarify for you that what one could mistake it as a mixing of two sourate is in fact a talismanic writing of the QURAN aiming at strengthening the effect of the help needed from Allah. He didn't mixed up quranic verses by mistake he was using some esoterical quranic science very widely spread in the west Africa and more in Fouta Toro he originated from May Allah hold his soul with the saints and the prophets. This said, in my understanding of your reading Arabic wich my native language, you absolutely very well understood what the late Omar was meaning in his letter. Jazzaki Allah Kheiran

As Salaamu Alaikum, Peace to All! I am a book worm and never heard or knew anything about Omar Ibn Said and born and raised in Camden NJ, I ended here in Upstate South Carolina about 20 miles from Clemson University. The transcibers who transcribed couldn't get it right what the American sister was saying in English so we should not miss the message Brother Omar was doing in such a perilous time. I hope to share this with all my associates of the thinking class as I know they will enjoy this. Long ago I heard a story that an enslaved man woke up in America and wrote a Qur-an. Back in the 70's my firstborn I named Hasan Atif and the Africans at college were astonished that I cast off the slavemasters' attributes. Shortly after I reverted. All these references will hopefully shape the minds of our youth in HISstory. I thank Allah for my 70+ years on this Earth and my 7 sons and 2 daughters- All Praises to Allah -Al Hamdu Lillah!

Very interesting. Solid scholarly critique. The importance of knowing the language of one's faith is important. Arabic to Muslims. Hebrew for Israel. Hebrew and Greek for Christians. Excellent that you can read and study Qur'anic texts. You are convincing about Omar Ibn Sa'id not converting. I am a Jew who lives around Muslims and Christians, and much cordial acceptance of many identical beliefs are discussed and acknowledged respectfully all three faiths. See our Muslim civilization in Africa before Europe knew about civilization.

My thoughts on the brother's combining ayat(may Allah have mercy on him) is that maybe he was using another verse as tafsir or showing that the Help of Allah came. Allahu 'Alim. And the times when he changed Arabic letters from what's familiar to us, could be from him reciting from a different dialect or qiraat of Qur'an. Jazikilan khair wa Barakallahu feeki

However, in the case of one who is forced to speak words (of disbelief) that are contrary to what is in his heart of faith, in order to save himself from his enemy thereby, there is no blame on him, because Allah may He be glorified, will only bring people to account for what they intend in their hearts. He came to America in the late 70's and met a few men who knew my father. The more he learned about them, the more they realized how much they didn't know about Islam. So they accepted him as their Sheikh because he taught them what true Islam is and how to value their lives and build a relationship with Allah Almighty to better prepare for the hereafter. I made a video with my parents, here on my channel, discussing some of their history under the tutelage of our Sheikh. Thank you so much for asking. its simple , to be christian you have to deny what came after, which he didn't, Islam is a correction to Christianity and therefore Muslim accept what wasn't corrupted in Christianity and deny what was added to to it which is the concept of trinity. therefore you never see Omar write "father , son and holly spirit". only One Creator God with no additions or modifications.

    Yes sis you said nothing but facts.. For me Arabic is my first language so when I read what he wrote I didn't take it as if he became christian at all. He was like he's telling us (his Muslim brothers) what happened to him and what they wants him to do.. that's all. First of all you can tell he was very very educated about islam; the fact that Arabic wasn't his tongue language at that time it was very hard to learn other languages, yet he didn't only memorizes Quran verses but he also knows how to write in Arabic!!. At that time ppl use to learn Arabic just for Islam.. Moreover, the fact that he said يسوع about Jesus peace be upon him, shows that he was very educated about the prophets from an Arabic/Islamic prospective, because clearly he didn't have an Arabic translation for bible! And for me I believe that it's impossible for someone who actually prays 5 times a day and practice Islam and believe that God is one and have NO other partners to changes his beliefs in Trinity!!! For someone who knows why the concept of trinity in Christianity is forbidden to change from believing to God (the creator) to pray for Jesus the (creation)!! Changing your concept of the Abrahamic god!I just can't believe it 🤷🏽‍♀️ -قال تعالى: {يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لاَ تَغْلُواْ فِي دِينِكُمْ وَلاَ تَقُولُواْ عَلَى اللّهِ إِلاَّ الْحَقِّ إِنَّمَا الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَى مَرْيَمَ وَرُوحٌ مِّنْهُ فَآمِنُواْ بِاللّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَلاَ تَقُولُواْ ثَلاَثَةٌ انتَهُواْ خَيْرًا لَّكُمْ إِنَّمَا اللّهُ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ سُبْحَانَهُ أَن يَكُونَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَات وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ وَكَفَى بِاللّهِ وَكِيلاً} [لنساء/171] -قال تعالى: {وَقَالُوا اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَلَدًا (88) لَقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْئًا إِدًّا (89) تَكَادُ السَّمَاوَاتُ يَتَفَطَّرْنَ مِنْهُ وَتَنْشَقُّ الْأَرْضُ وَتَخِرُّ الْجِبَالُ هَدًّا (90) أَنْ دَعَوْا لِلرَّحْمَنِ وَلَدًا (91) وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لِلرَّحْمَنِ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا (92) إِنْ كُلُّ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِلَّا آتِي الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدًا (93) لَقَدْ أَحْصَاهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا (94) وَكُلُّهُمْ آتِيهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَرْدًا (95)} [سورة مريم/88-95] -قال تعالى: (لَقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ ثَالِثُ ثَلَاثَةٍ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَهٍ إِلَّا إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْتَهُوا عَمَّا يَقُوْلُوْنَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوا مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيْمٌ) [المائدة/73]

The author, cant understand anything about that writing. for example. ida ja a nasrulah.walfat hu. and Nasru minalah wafat hul gariib wabasharul mu miniin. We know it s two different surah. but the take is Patience.and istagfara. and tasbeeh. because at the end of the surah says fasabih behamdi rabika. that"s what you do when you have a hard time.and good time. both. be thankful. because in laha ala kuli shey an ghadiiran. that is what he is trying to say SHEIKH SAID.. Thank you My sister. i just subscribed.
