Autism vs. Ubers/Taxis: Why Ubers and Taxis Suck for My Autistic Brain

Places My Autistic Brain Hates: Taxis & Ubers
What happens when you combine uncomfortable smells and temperatures with whiplash, unpredictable jolts, a little bit of horrible music and maybe a dash of small talk? If you're getting into an Uber or a taxi in a lot of cities I've been to, you have the perfect recipe for sensory overload. 😫 Join me as I share my personal struggle with taxis and Ubers, stemming from my ADHD and autism. From the sensory onslaught of nauseating smells and sudden stop-go that can induce carsickness to the anxiety-inducing encounters with overly chatty drivers who sometimes get lost, join me as I unravel the discomfort of riding in an Uber or taxi with a horrible driver. If you've ever felt ready to hurl before you've even gotten to your destination and compounded it with a sensory overload, this one's for you.

Oh my god, I relate to so much of this. Late brakers/jerky drivers in particular stress me OUT. That’s why, as a Lyft driver, I take extra care to be as smooth a driver as I can. You put it nicely - coasting into that red light. Always going about speed limit, no sudden moves, no stupid risks, always signaling even if no one’s around. And no small talk if someone doesn’t actively show interest in it by asking questions and whatnot. And no road rage, surprisingly. It’s easy to keep that to myself with a passenger in the car. AuDHDer here, and I totally get you. I hope I’m a decent ride for my fellow autie passengers. It’s rough out there. 😊

I wish you would move to Taipei and teach a chunk of these jerky drivers how to absorb the inertia! I had to make an early exit out of a car yesterday because it was so bad. 🤢🤢

My dad was a taxi driver, west coast US, owned his own company for awhile. He did not drive really as you experience in Taiwan. He did take shortcuts around streetlights. In Denmark the taxi are really clean and usually Mercedes or Teslas now. If someone gets sick in the cab, they have to pay a fine and the car is taken out of service to be detailed. BTW, I did not learn to drive from my father, only how to steer the car, but I do drive like him. My logical mind racing forward to find the best route between A and B and staying at the speed limit. What is the use of rushing forward if you have to wait at a light, and they’re timed anyway. Also for fuel consumption moderate acceleration and not speeding are better. Then there is the wear and tear of the car when breaking. These logical aspects keeps me from driving like the taxi drivers you talk about. Plus, with the advent of map applications, I found out speeding only gains you stress and maybe up to 1 to 2 min at arrival time at your destination. I do not need the stress and the anger that usually comes with trying to get somewhere quickly. Trust me when I was younger, I was a speed demon.

Sorry, I have so much to say about this - ABSORB THE INERTIA! Simmer into that stop! I love it! I was lucky, when my dad first taught me how to drive, he taught me a little move to make that final stopping moment smoother, to take away that lurch forward and CLUNK backwards: When you feel that forward momentum come to a halt, let off the brake just a tiny little bitty bit, and it keeps the falling-back CLUNK from happening. I’ve gotten some nice complements on my driving working for Lyft. I love your channel all around, but low-key this might be my favorite video so far. I feel you so hard on all of these little details. Music is an interesting one. I’m a classical musician, and picky in my own way. Every genre has bad writing in it, stuff that’s lazy and gratingly repetitive. I’ve carefully pieced together playlists for morning shifts and evening shifts; morning is slow/mid-tempo, major-key songs with simple bass lines, drums, and melody. Chill with a hint of grooviness, without being elevator music. Nighttime playlist is a lot of funk, new blues, and stuff in between that has that mid-tempo groovy quality. Nothing too busy, energetic, or evocative. And always at a volume where it’s quiet enough to have a phone conversation but not so quiet that all you hear is the high hat, that “tss tss tss tss”. Hate hate hate that. Also: No air fresheners. Fragrance-free cleaning products where I can. Car is kept immaculate. I’m even picky about my deodorant and hair products, that chemical-y smell is the worst. And because of this video, I’m thinking about putting up a sign up in the back that says something to the effect of “tell me if you’re too hot/cold or want the music off”. And maybe some sick bags just in case. Thoughts? Edit to add: Also an AuDHDer. 😊

I get car sick too but sudden noice when opening the window isn't an issue. Concerning the music, I just put my ear buds and I distract myself with youtube or my own music. I can be okay with chitchat, depending of the subject. I like talking, ranting and learning new things but it REALY depend on the subject and the point of view of the other person, their values and principles.

OMG when they try to have a conversation with you! Like bruh, cars are my special interest STFU already so I can sit in silence and mentally sponge up every detail of every fiber and panel in the interior of your 2017 Camry LE 🙄 ... Are you really telling me you can't feel that your front brake rotors are warped? Do you even care about this car?! It just deserves so much better 😂

I grew up in a taxi, my parents had a taxi-ambulance business. Probably because I've been used to, I'm fine in a taxi, with a good driver. But I would never go in a Uber, if anything happens, their insurance is not ok for the client, and they don't have as many rigid rules as the taxi drivers, they could behave badly, and the client can't do anything. In France, there's been a lot of assaults on women by uber drivers, I find it scary. It's mostly about being able to trust the driver, for me. I'm autistic, but no ADHD detected, it may be helpful ! When you're in a taxi, you can ask the driver to have a smoother driving, he's supposed to respect that (at least in my country). Having severe back issues, I'm very sensitive to this point, and never found a driver who didn't respond well to my demand, in France and in Spain. I guess taxi drivers are better trained in my country than in yours ! Where I have a huge problem is when they feel more comfortable with the radio on, because I'm not good at small talks... And I hate the radio... And car perfumes are a nightmare. I always had problems with body temperature regulation, and I'm never really aware of real temperature, I couldn't tell about that.

On the flipside, I once got into a Uber, and the guy wouldn't speak, and he scared the crap out of me I think he might've had autism or a bad day but I'm autistic too and it's not that big of a deal to say hello never felt so awkward in my life and I just looked around helplessly Got the hell out of that car in like three blocks cause I said I needed to stop here and get a pack of cigarettes, and I didn't even smoke
