Autism + Unhealthy Habits (Obsessive Diet and Exercise) | AUTISM IN GIRLS

Click my CoPilot link go.mycopilot.com/oliviahops to get 14 days FREE with your own expert fitness and health coach!
My name is Olivia Hops and in today's video I talk about how our Autistic brain's hyperfocus ability can come with a negative side affect: becoming too obsessive with things, including with unhealthy/bad things.
Autism and eating disorders are linked (check out my friend @Liv Label Free for more details), and in 8th grade, I myself become obsessive with diet and exercise to the point where I developed an eating disorder.
I've been scared to try to work out regularly ever since. But then I found CoPilot! Check them out through the link above.

Probably a topic for its own video, but SLEEP. I feel like I have a dysfunctional relationship with sleep. I either don’t get enough or spend half the day sleeping. On my night schedules in particular I often find myself in pre-noon obligations which then creates a night of just 4 hours of sleep.

That hyper obsessive part is very recognisable for me. Not taking breaks at work, not finishing until everything is done (which is impossible), having trouble to leave the workplace are some of the things I struggle with. So, the not going to the toilet thing … Yeah, that happens. Thank you for being so straightforward. Being direct makes it click. 🙏👍

When I told my docs about some of my obsessive hyperfocus and/or special interests, they pegged me with OCD. In fact, the doctors I worked with were eager to pin OCD, anxiety, and depression on me, and I had to convince them to give me an autism diagnosis. Even then, my neuropsych said "borderline aspergers". I feel like as an adult female, I learn more about autism from KZread videos (yours are my favorite!) than my skeptical old-school Midwestern doctors would ever be able to tell me. It was a disappointing experience, but the diagnosis itself is still important to me! Black & white thinking = need the diagnosis, no matter how reluctant or assumptive the doctors are.

They did the same with me as a pre teen anxiety, depression and ocd just additional symptoms on top of ASD 1, ADHD Inattentive, PTSD and RSD. It wasn’t ever OCD. The Anxiety and Depression also still exist especially when my needs aren’t met and hugely stressed.

I have a very limited vegetarian diet mainly consisting of carbs. I do avoid most 'junk food' though & I have never drank soda. I give some credit to my Asperger's for never having any desire to even try drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or vaping.

Sounds like we are the same person! I have a very limited vegetarian diet. My mom calls me a “carb-etarian” because I eat mostly carbs. Mostly I eat cereal, pasta, bread, and cheese. And all my sweets (so cookies, cakes, pastries). I do like vegetables, and I do like fruits but only if they are blended into a smoothie. “Healthy” things I eat are yogurt, lentils, beans, rice. I only drink milk and water. Occasionally I’ll have a strawberry lemonade at a restaurant. And I’ve never done any of those recreational activities you listed either.

@@OliviaHops This is fascinating that were so similar. My food pyramid mainly consists of bread, cereal, pasta, pizza, crackers, pancakes, cheese, & peanut butter. My friends call me a yeast-atarian because the only veggies I eat are potatoes & corn. I like ketchup, pizza sauce, & pasta sauce, but not plain tomatoes. I like applesauce, but it was incredibly weird when I tried an actual apple as an adult a few years ago. I used to eat pears & bananas as a kid, so I really should try them again. Also, I'm still upset two of my favorite cereals, Product19 & Quaker Puffed Rice, were discontinued a few years ago after being sold for decades. I got most of my good nutrition from them & now don't have as much cereal so I take a Flintstone's vitamin every day. Water makes up over 99% of the drinks I consume. I only have milk with cereal & Gatorade if I'm doing physical stuff outdoors & need something more than water. That's awesome you're a vegetarian! I've been one since I was 16. How long have you been one?

So glad youre feeling better 💓 I had the same obsession when I was younger...funny..it dawned on me at 60 that at 14 we are getting a new body as we mature and we think we should stay like an adolescent body. What a lie I believed. Anyway, now at 60 I continue to seek out my bodies and brains best interest and I find that as I got older and had kids my body was much healthier and so was my brain, after becoming a born again believer in Christ Jesus, He has become my compass! When I add a few pounds, it usually means I am going to get sick and need the extra weight anyway 🙃

I'm currently on my own journey of trying to figure out what is "wrong" with me at almost 25 years old, even though I've suffered from an ED (and other stuff) in the past too. I've always said I'm obsessed with controlling everything but I resonate with this video more than I care to admit. Keep going, you're doing a great job! This is so me! And so relatable. I often felt like my habits for being healthy and eating decently wasn't towards a visible goal for my body or me, but moreover that completionism goal and obsession. As you said, I must walk x amount of kilometers or complete x amount of squats or sit-ups. But I'm in general by my own habits and routines generally healthy without conscious effort and the conscious forcing myself to complete xyz health wise, added so much stress I didn't get the benefit. Now my days have an allocated time to complete a healthy task like go for a walk or do yoga, but also I know the signs better of also giving myself the rest. Walks for me are a form of stimming, but if I don't have the energy for them then I acknowledge that and do lesser energy stims until my spoon count is up again for walks. When tired, walking takes like 8 spoons, when I'm better rested walking gives me like 3 spoons. Learning this and being able to figure out my bodies cues has taken so much time and I still miss the cues 50% of the time, but that's such a big win that I can see it, recognize it and adjust to be kind to myself instead of bullying myself with fitness/health obsessions. Such a great video!

I’ve had an unhealthy relationship with food since junior high, and battled with binge eating disorder. I gained a lot of weight in my teens and 20s, and was finally able to get it under control just a few years ago. I feel like food was an obsession and a stim for me, and there’s a few trigger foods I’m definitely afraid of now that I’ve adopted pretty good eating habits and cut my body weight in half. 😬

It makes sense. All makes sense. Eating desorder and many mental health issues are under umbrella of Autism. I agree with one comment: one can learn about autisam from you tubers more then from the medical professionals. I have spent decades going to various psychological therapies only to learn recently that my problems are not psychological but physiological. I am more convinced in that theory as I did my level best to make my child to live minimally psychological demanded and she turned to be just like me! That was also A-ha moment! Diagnosis of Autisam, or whatever it is called is hardly going to bring us relief in living our existence but at least we know now why we are different. Withough diagnoses there was always that feeling that you are not the same as the others, yet you have hardly ever known anybody different like you. Or, often you have the feeling that intellectually you can do the same as others but something stops you to go for it and you end up feeling left out. And alone.

Yes, I became hyper-obsessed with exercise, with periodized endurance training firncycling and running. While it has given me many health and performance benefits, including ever getting sick from Covid despite not being vaccinated, it has also taken a toll on other apsects of my life. I focus on every minutia, like nasal breathing and avoiding mouth breathing unless under strenuous exercise. It’s tough to stop, but I’ll have to tone it down so that my work and personal life can go more smoothly.

Hi there, I think you have asked a great question to a legitimate, and probably to a common issue. I’m sure you’re helping others too so thank you. I can relate. I bought Puma Seamless laser cut underpants, and I think I bought them either from a sport store or Costco. They are a nice strong smooth spandex type fabric with no tags and the material is one same piece, which doesn’t change in texture or knit. There are two thinly stitched seams for ‘that usual’ crotch lining and they’re not as irritating as anything I’ve worn. They do creep up a little at the bottom of my butt but they are very comfy for running and wearing generally, and they don’t rub along your ligaments and skin folds, or irritate your lower abdomen, or move around with other clothing, like other underwear that I’ve not tolerated well. I like them and they are a good choice for me. Please don’t be afraid to even wear no underwear, or consider unpadded training tights as an alternative (they’re quick dry and not cumbersome), or something else that is tolerable. It’s very personal and it’s your body so please try to give yourself permission to be creative, if it removes an obstacle in achieving something good. Oh and please be encouraged to keep asking questions. All the very best to you.
