Autel Evo 2 Dual Thermal Drone-FLIR: Should you buy this drone?

Ғылым және технология

The Autel Evo 2 Dual has a high resolution thermal sensor. It's been out for about 6 months now but there's still not a lot of information about it. Is this drone a good fit for public safety? What kind of quality can I expect from this camera? How does it compete with the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise? In this video I'll provide more details about this drone and and help you decide if it might be a good fit.

    Excellent video! The best piece of advice at 8:36 into the video: First figure out and understand what functionality you need, then start looking for the hardware that can deliver. Not only applies to drones really. However it is the single biggest (and costly) mistake made in organizations every day. Like you say, one thing never fits all.

My question is, im planning to buy a Thermal but the differencie between V2 and V3 is significant to me, do you think its worth to buy the V2 now that V3 is available, or you think support of V2 ending in 2024 is not important and can ignore that part?

    The version 2 units are discontinued and will be sold out soon. There are a few differences: The V3 has an upgraded transmission system. V2 had a dual band (2.4 and 5.8ghz). The new version 3 has a tri-band transmission system (900, 2.4 and 5.8 ghz). Other upgrades include: * A slightly upgraded optical camera that is better in low light. *Compatibility with the newly released Live Deck 2, remote receiver *Compatibility with the FAA's remote ID standard which will go into effect in Sept. of 2023. The version 2 units will require the use of an add-on module.

I have a few questions about the new firmware that addresses the thermal Added radiometric support for infiRay 640T sensor in picture-in-picture mode. Don't really understand what that means the thermal camera will or won't do. and I can't find anyone that can explain it Thanks

  • @BillBongle

    @BillBongle

    3 жыл бұрын

    If I understand what you're asking, does the new firmware add radiometric capability? I think that Autel is about to release a new thermal sensor that has radiometric capabilities. The Boson sensor I reviewed does not have radiometric capabilities. Radiometric is a capability that records the temperature of each pixel. There are software applications which can read and interpret this data (FLIR Tools).This data is helpful in commercial applications like solar panel inspection or measuring the temperature of components on a power grid. Public safety personnel typically do not use this functionality with possible exception of firefighters who may find that information helpful.

    Great question! Adding thermal capabilities to your assets is vital for missing person searches. A quick google search of "drone finds missing" will reveal thousands of results. There are countless examples of drones being used to locate missing, endangered persons. While your existing drones can be a great asset, without a thermal camera you could fly right over a missing person and not even know it. You may consider partnering with your local emergency government office or a local fire department. As far as grants go, I would focus more on local organizations and businesses. In my community a convenience store chain donated money to purchase drone equipment. Optimist clubs, business organizations and cities groups. You could consider holding a fund raiser. Come to them with a clear plan on what you would use the equipment for and exactly what you need to get it. Contact me for an official quote so you know exactly what you need. The model featured in this video has been replaced with another that has more capabilities. Email me at info@titletowndrones.com and I will explain the many options. Good luck!

    amazing review! do you know of any thermal FPV drones? what are your thoughts on the concept of one?

  • @BillBongle

    @BillBongle

    2 жыл бұрын

    I am curious to know what application this might have. Thermal imaging systems are typically used for analysis or locating heat signatures. FPV flying is usually fast moving. What are your thoughts on how thermal imaging might apply to this type of flying? Thermal cameras are very expensive and may not hold up well in collisions which are common in FPV flight applications. Those are my thoughts.

  • @tobyadog

    @tobyadog

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@BillBongle Thank you for your response! To be honest I just want to fly at night hahaha. As someone who owns a couple of PVS-14s, I know that image intensifiers don’t provide a wide enough field of view to fly with. Something which thermal might be able to do. FPV cameras are often low resolution, many being 640x480, which works out nicely. And while FPV drones are often used for racing or doing stunts, at the end of the day it’s just a more immersive method of long distance observation. The thought of breaking a 10k thermal camera in a crash sounds heartbreaking, for sure, but that’s nothing that the Evo 2 isn’t immune to either. If such a camera exists I’d love to try it, otherwise I suppose I’ll have to do with slapping a bunch of IR lights onto a drone ahahah.

    How does the thermal image & refresh rate quality compare to DJI H20T thermal camera?

  • @BillBongle

    @BillBongle

    3 жыл бұрын

    The thermal resolution is the same but the sensors are from different manufacturers. Each has a 30hz refresh rate. Some users believe the Autel sensor produces superior thermal imaging, it is a genuine FLIR product vs the H20T which is manufactured by DJI. This is a subjective evaluation and up to the viewer. The H20T has additional thermal capabilities such as radiometric. I do not currently have an H20T to compare it to. The H20T has a 23X optical zoom whereas the Autel uses 8x digital zoom so the zoom capabilities of the H20T would be superior to the Autel sensor. From a public safety perspective, the thermal cameras have similar resolution and each would produce excellent results but there is a big price difference in these systems. The H20T camera costs nearly as much as the Autel Evo 2 Dual rugged bundle. Once you purchase a Matrice 300 and batteries you are more than double the price.

  • @socalbadger1

    @socalbadger1

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@BillBongle Thank you for your insight. I think the newly announced Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced uses the same thermal sensor as the H20T - with the only exception coming from lower digital zoom - 32x visual / 16x Thermal. I think the reduction in zoom power is a result of the smaller payload size. Just assumptions here, but based on the discussions on various forums, this is the most plausible setup they'll have. The rumored price is also in the range of 5.5-7k, most likely $6.5k - significantly lower than Evo 2 Dual. I was ready to purchase the Evo 2 Dual, but on the day I had planned on purchasing DJI announced their new M2EA, so I'm just waiting to see what their official pricing is before deciding. I agree the FLIR sensor may be slightly more clear - but not worth paying an additional $3k if that ends up being the case.

  • @BillBongle

    @BillBongle

    @@socalbadger1 I don't blame you. There is only speculation on what DJI will price the Mavic 2E Advanced. I am guessing its going to be a bit higher than those estimates. I would point out that the Autel is not burdened with flight restrictions. Lots of things to consider but it's going to be interesting to see how the M2EA plays into this. Having options is a good thing.

    Hello MJ. The drone featured in this video is an older model, the Autel Evo 2 Dual. That version was equipped with a FLIR Boson Sensor. Later versions like the Autel Evo 2 Enterprise 640T utilize a different thermal sensor made by another company, Infiray. The 640T was featured in a different video that I produced comparing it the the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise. There was a period when the customer could choose a FLIR branded sensor on the Evo 2 Enterprise (Version 2) but this have been since discontinued. The current versions (Version 3) are all equipped with the Infiray brand thermal sensor. I hope that clears things up.

    The resolution fo the thermal camera is a big part of the price. I think there are some great commercial opportunities here as well with roof and solar panel inspections. Before I purchase a piece of equipment I do a cost benefit analysis and try to determine how long it will take for the equipment to pay for itself.

    @@BillBongle what would you suggest charging for solar panel inspections?

    @@scottdufour I would start by contacting potential clients and see what sort of detail and report they need from an inspection and the size of the job. You can ask them outright how much they might pay for such a service. Some solar fields are enormous. This will help you determine the scope of work. Next, calculate the cost of insurance, 3rd party software reporting tools, prep time, post processing, estimated flight time, travel time and any other expenses you may incur. Don't forget taxes, for a small business owner this could amount to as much as 38% of your gross income. Will you pursue the thermographer certification? This credential may help you better prepare to operate a small business that specializes in thermal inspections. Consider the cost of the equipment you are using and the specialized nature of these inspections. I am sorry that I cannot give you an hourly amount but a common business mistake is to charge too little for specialized services. You may find some guidance by attending some webinars offered by Drone Deploy, Pix4d and others. I wish you success.

    Yeah thermal cameras are expensive. The new 640T saves some money though.
