    musk tastes like rosewater (its turkish delight). aussies love musk. the chocolate bar always looks bloomed. its how they were made with low liquid and powder milk to not melt in our heat and it rehydrates and becomes milky in your mouth.

    I've lost count of the number of Aussie 1 Man Ration Packs I've consumed in my many years of service in the Army & Reserves....sadly most were eaten cold due to time constraints. Always found the main meals tasted 10 times better warmed up. The Vegemite is best paired with the Cream Crackers & some Cheese ...or lightly spread on the bread. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

    There are 2 pieces of advice that I would normally give someone trying Vegemite, unfortunately the first can't really be applied to this ration. 1. When making a vegemite sandwich the butter/margarine should be at least twice as thick as the vegemite. 2. It is highly recommended to have cheese with vegemite as it tends to round out some of the more intense parts of the flavour profile.

  • @RationNerd

    @RationNerd

    3 ай бұрын

    If I get to have another CR1M, I will try the vegemite again and be more knowledgeable on how to eat it. Even thinned out, I dont think it is for me. But I am always willing to try. I try to go into most rations blind, or as much as possible. It makes it a lot more fun to dig into the unknown, than to know if something is going to be great or nasty ahead of time.

  • @lesstockley4937
    @lesstockley4937Ай бұрын

    To save time in the field you place the main meals in your mess cup with water and boil it in the bag, you have a hot meal and then use the water to make your tea/coffee. As others have said, the cream crackers with a bit of the cheese and a smear of vegemite is the best way to use them. I've been out for over a decade but my 2 youngest sons are in the Aus Army Cadets, they come home from weekend camps with left over meals, love it. PS - the cheese is well known to stop you needing to sh-t for a few days 😀

    'Musk' flavour goes back to England a few hundred years ago, when 'real' musk was used as a breath freshener. It really only took off in Australia & England. It's made with an 'artificial' musk, so no deer were hurt in their production. BTW, you can also use vegemite like stock cubes, so if you don't like it on the bread, you can use some to strengthen the beef flavour in the stew.

    I know I have been out 24 years, but we used to sort through our rations to get rid of as much as possible, keeping the high calorie/energy items. Brit Arctic Rations - Breakfast muesli was crap, the hot chocolate had the same calories. When it was tins and tubes, the cheese/jam/butter mix on the pretty hard biscuits would be a meal - and lots of energy. You yomp with what you have so that was important. This looks like 2/3 days meals! Do they march far with this lot, and how do the troops break it down? More interesting than some gourmet experience....

    lol as 3 meals is a joke. Try breakfast smoko ( morning tea) lunch and dinner along with a snack. Vegemite is topically a breakfast spread on toast spread lightly or on a sandwich for lunch. Lollies are an extra treat for energy throughout the day as well. The drinks are usually coffee or tea with meal and the fruit drinks are for hydration throughout the day as Australia is a bloody hot country most of the year. 250ml is 1 cup measure here in Australia.

You did the old classic error of eating way too much, you don't slather it on like chocolate you just sorta smear a tiny bit on what you're eating, preferably with butter. Without butter combining it with that cheese or even the condensed milk might be nice, on the bread. Nobody really eats it on its own, but yeah once you get the taste you 'can' but it's not the way to do it.

    Vegemite is not jam. you arent supposed to put it on thick. its a concentrate and should be used extremely sparingly. try a thin strip of it on bread with a bit of the milk/

    Next time! I try to go into each ration as uninformed as possible. That way I am not influenced by another opinion other than my own. I do screw things up occasionally, but at least you guys get to poke fun at me! LOL. Thank you for the view and the comment!

    The only thing I like about it is that it is not so hard on your teeth. But with all food items, to each their own! I am sure someone out there prefers little rock hard beef jerky pieces! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!

    "That is a metric shit ton of food". I disagree. It is a huge verity of a little bit of different foods but the quantity as a whole appears to be relatively minimal for a 24 hour fighting man's rations. On top of that it looks like at least a quarter of the weight is in packaging. When I was in service, I would have eaten most of that 24 hour ration in one sitting. I assume that Australia still used mess kits since you can't heat up those pouches with just matches and what else are you scrubbing, the spoon?

    everything can be heated in the bags and eaten so you just need your kidney cup, hexi stove and water. everything else you need is in the kit. because these are designed for hot weather environments of australia mostly these meals are to be consumed with a large volume of fluids. you should be drinking a litre or so an hour and with the meals your drinking at least a litre in the drinks. the museli expands in your stoach and increases the feeling of being full as well as the powdered milk drink, museli bars, condensed fruit etc. I'm a big eater and i never felt hungry eating these.
