Australian-based Māori man refused restaurant entry because of his tā moko

Good on him for educating people, just a misunderstanding. I love that light skin Maori, learn and embrace the culture and history from their ancestors lands like anyone else, it’s his blood and culture. We should be proud. I hope more Kooris, Murris, Palawa, Nunga, Noongars and other mobs here in Australia don’t lose their roots to this country and continue to listen, learn and maintain culture while sharing with the rest of our nation. We’re all here now so we gotta work together.

I wasn't anyway) glad I came across this video and could learn more about the meaning behind the tattoos. It does look intimidating to those who are not aware of the culture. We as Aussies need to better learn the culture of our ANZAC brothers! :) I hope this gets decent exposure to the Australian Project viewers and general public!

You see, in the Māori world, all it takes is for you to be a descendent of a Māori. Nobody in the Māori community thinks less of a white Māori. If you are a descendent, it is your birth right. It's just a policy that's being introduced into australian bars & clubs. I myself being australian get refused entry into venues because of neck tattoos. They think anyone with lots of tattoos is a bikie, which is bullshit. So it's not a understanding of the Maori culture it's a rule for everyone that has tattoos from the neck up. Not much we can do, I wouldn't want to give them my business anyway if they treat people like that.

A bit frustrating because they had a booking. A million food places so who cares, but it would be nice to know in advance. I have tattoos. I can cover them up, and do for work, but I don't want to do that when I am enjoying my free time. I wouldn't care if a restaurant didn't want me eating there, but please put that on the website and mention it at booking, so that I have the opportunity to book some place else.

@@nicholastautuhi5031 It's relevant in my opinion because anyone who has any sense knows that if you have tatoos done on your face, nobody will ever give you a job, women will all run away, people won't talk to a man with a tattooed face because they think it's weird. Normal people know these things and won't get anything like that done, even if they would secretly like to. For a man whose ancestors were eating other humans only a couple of hundred years ago, it's an entirely different story. He thinks it's cool.

@@paulmorgan4369 normal? Dude, I know plenty of people with tattooed faces who have good jobs, it's not the 1950s anymore. Just because someone is tattooed doesn't make them automatically a violent psychopath. And your whole kōrero about "normal people" is, honestly, just weird. You ever met someone with a tattoo on their hands, neck or face and actually spoken to them? Again, I think you're really reaching to validate your comments on cannibalism being relevant. As far as you saying he thinks he's cool, that's incredibly reductive and smacks of condescension. Right now, we Maori are trying to reclaim something that was nearly lost to us in traditional tattooing among many, many other things. Is it really that offensive to you? Comments about him moaning about not getting let into restaurant in Australia aside. Why would they give a shit over there? I get it, a little silly.

I think it more comes down to the dress code policy. For example if you came in with hair that looked like it hadn't been washed in years it would be the exact same situation, they're not going to state "clean hair" on their dress code. It just comes down to if they make exceptions for one person they will have to make exceptions for everyone including gang members with full face tattoos.

I think he's kind of naive to commit to a full face tattoo like that and never expect this to happen. Not everyone shares the same cultural beliefs as everyone else. For instance, I bet he is the first person to get picked out of the strip search at any airport overseas. It's just what comes with these decisions. Looks dope tho, respect
