The Australian $2 coin started life in 1988 as a plain coin but by 2012 it showed its true colours

It's worth noting that the red poppy $2 coin and the circulation issue gold poppy $2 coin reverses were struck from two distinctly different dies. The gold poppy die has the raised gold poppy centre whereas the dies used to strike the red poppy dont have the raised poppy design. The micro wording on the red poppy $2 coin is covered by the red paint that was used. There were also two carded types for the red poppy $2 coin. The RAM carded issue and the R.S.L carded issue. It's the R.S.L carded issue you want. All 3 have secondary market value ranges.

Thanks again for a terrific comment. Your comments are so on point that you have inspired me to make my next video about these dissimilarities and how they can be used to identify “Nail polish Poppies” for people new to the hobby.👍

It definitely reduces the value of the coin, if that is what you mean but it is far from uncommon. Many 2012 Red Poppies were circulated and got knocked around a fare bit resulting in damage including the loss of pigment. Having said that, having an imperfect Poppy is better than having no Poppy at all.
