Yes, this world cup was the turning point. To be more specific, exceptional ball McGrath bowled to Lara to disturb his wickets. Australia was in trouble. And league match against WI was kind of do or die situation. After dominating win in that ODI, Australian team never looked back.

Yes the only weaklinks in this team was moody and paul reifel ...after this world cup the arrival of Symonds Hayden Lee made them even much stronger than before and even the players who are not selected for this 1999 worldcup like Gillespie and bitchel selected for 2003 and they played their part beautifuly and then due to Kevin Pietersen arrival Gillespie vanished from international cricket and then cake bracken Stuart Clark Shane watson Hogg hussey heyyyyyy every body played their part excellently and they can defend 200 targets and they can chase 280+ totals even the present Australian team couldn't match the 2003-2007 Australian team.. even some of the ipl finals won by Australians dominance Shane watson in the final latest final starc 2008 ipl Shane Warne captaincy Mike Hussey for csk Gilchrist for Deccan chargers

Saeed Anwar and Inzamam Ul Haq were Pak's trump cards in anchoring the innings. But again, as a team, Pak played well as a team in that world cup and thats why qualified for the finals. You don't want a team to win a world cup which depends on 1 player. Not many teams would win if they just have 1 or 2 good players.

@@macster1613 i know cricket is 22 players game, just remember previous two innings of anwar (two consecutive centuries) and this innings' starting (may be 3 stunning boundaries). Anwar in-form is one of the most eye-soothing possibilities of cricket.

Being a very little kid in 1999, I remember the glimpses of the match being watched on the national television across the whole Pakistan. It's still heartbreaking and i do remember that after the match the streets near my house turned like a mournful funeral. It was the best squad of Pakistan Cricket team, I don't know how they got defeated by Australia. 💔💔💔

I remember how we won our second match from Australia and were sure we'd win the final as well. But our batting badly failed in this world cup. Only Moin khan would come and do 50 to 60 runs out of the whole lot. Our bowlers (shoaib akhtar specially) were lethal back then. I think we lost to India and SA only in qualifying matches. rest of the matches we won. And wete sure Aus would lose. Aus had a bad start in that particular world cup

This was a 270-plus pitch. Complete batting collapse by Pakistan. After playing so well in the tournament, they looked tired and ineffective in the final. Pakistan, unfortunately, has always relied on raw talent. They never developed a scientific approach to the game. Things are changing now, but it will take a while.

It was a fixed match. That was the match which ended my interest in the game of cricket. Pakistan cricket never recovered from the damage that was inflicted upon it by the defeat in that match .

It was not a fixed match. Pak just did not play well, they won the toss and elected to bat, that was what was required. Post a total and defend it.

Its a game, its a sport, as a sportsman, u try to give 100%. Pak played the whole world cup beautifully, just could not bat properly in the final, in a way, the batting choked, the batsman choked. It happens in cricket. Bowling did not lose the final for Pak, it was the batting. Wasim Akram is a bowler, so if u are saying that match was fixed, which batsmen fixed the match and got out cheaply. Tell me which batsmen because they just made 132, so if you are accusing this match to be fixed, tell me which batsmen.

Fun Facts: Australians dominated both formats of the game but whenever they had consistent records over the period of time India and Pakistan stood up to them: 1) In 2011 World Cup Australia won 34 World Cup games in a row before losing to Pakistan and India in final group stage match and Q/F respectively. 2) Twice in the test cricket Australia won 16 matches on the trot and both times India have beaten them 😊

Abe 2011 mein aus apne peak mein nahi tha india aur Pak ne 1999 to 2007 aus ku kabhi knockouts mein haraya in prestigious events. Only Sri Lanka haraya tha in 2002 champions trophy semi finals and England in 2004 champions trophy semi finals as well.

Meanwhile what Sri Lanka defeated in champions trophy back in 2002 they had all those players which was also a squad in 2003 wc. And Pakistan never defeated them in any knockout game back from 1999 to 2007 uptil too.

I think the worst finals were 1999 thanks to Pak's batting collapse against Aus and India's bowling nightmare in 2003 finals against Aus. To chase a score of over 350 against Aus was one-sided and Sachin got out in the first over against McGrath made it one of the worst finals in the history of world cups.

One of the finest match it is. Wish to see it ball by ball please......

What a pathetic final this was to what had been an absolutely great tournament till then..

@@muhammadsharif1205 this is as far as i remember, the last memorable world cup.. full crowds, great atmosphere, players like klusener, akhtar becoming legends.. even the uniforms in this world cup are discussed and tried to be replicated till date.. and the attitude that was given a green signal here "Pakistani are an unpredictable team" is something that they keep carrying till date thinking and knowing nobody expects them to take responsibility.

This was the worst and heart attach match of the best pak team. Alas.

I was 10 year old at that time a dye hard cricket fan but felt extremely disappointed on that day the reason was Pakistan was dangerous with bowl and Bat they lost Australia that is also one-sided very badly.OZ ruined Pak like any associate county.Till today's it is a mystery was that match played with full honesty or it was fixed. Whatever is the reason on that cricket was murder and stabbed. If Pak had scored at least 235 Pak bowlers were had contained OZ for sure.
