Guus Hiddink magic was amazing

Fun Facts: 1.The assistant manager of Socceroos at that time is none other than the current manager, Graham Arnold. 2.Australia reached the Round of 16 in two occasions. The ironic fact is that the opponents that denied the Socceroos' dream (Italy and Argentina) went on to win the whole thing at the end. Italy and Argentina also won their World Cup after beating the same opponent on penalties (France). 3.Japan beat Australia in the next year's Asian Cup held in 4 ASEAN countries. Aloisi got another goal, but the Socceroos lost on penalties in the quarter final. They also lost to the same opponents in 2011 Asian Cup Final held in Qatar after extra time, still with the same golden team from the 2006 World Cup (minus team captain Mark Viduka).

Also in both 2006 and 2022 it took penalty shootouts against a South American Opponent to get Australia to the world cup.

When the final draw came out in Leipzig, Australia was still the OFC member. Now they couldn't be drawn into same group due to the same confederations.

I was in Spain at the time, was emotioned of the Japanese chances to make it to at least the best 16. The loss still hurts, but not more than 2018...

One of the best formations of australian team footbal I ever watched. Many of these players were really great football players.

It's all conjecture, but I thought the team that really should have gone through were the 1997 and 2001 teams. And with the confidence grown from making a world cup we would have seen it.

日本のダラダラ守備が気になる。当日相当暑かったそうだが、それならそれで体力ある選手をスタメンで使うべき。まして、初戦から足をつる坪井は本人もそうだがメディカルチームの責任もある。あとは、守備のシーンで1 topならまだしも2 topなのだからもっと降りてきて守備してほしい。中盤のディフェンスも相手に時間を与えすぎ。全体的に日本の守備にあまりルールが無いのがわかる。 総じて、監督とその監督をここまで引っ張った協会の責任。負けるべくして負けた。

この頃のサッカーのブロックのなさや中盤のスカスカさは本当に爆笑もんだな😂

ドイツのサッカースタジアムの雰囲気は素晴らしい

Iraq lost to Jordan, where a player that scored the goal when the game was 2-1 up was immediately sent off for the 2nd yellow card after performing an illegal celebrations by running through the pitchside, despite not taking off his shirt. This is literally a disgrace.

I remember this match. It was a fun game. I knew Australia will defeat Japan and go to the next round. It was Coach Guus Hiddink who famously led South Korea to semifinal in 2002 whose magic made it happen again

​@@viditsharma5514yes the whole world know that South Korea cheated. They cheated against Italy and Spain. Spain had 2 goals disallowed and the ball was clearly inside the field for the second goal. The evidences are so concrete that Korea cheated! I just feel sorry for them that despite all of their cheating and dirty plays yes Koreans are well known for their dirty plays they sti have not won the Asian Cup since 1960 Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha Haha that's 64 years ago. Japan has won 4 Asian Cups since 1992.

3-6-1 formation. When it's still anyone's game, punish heavy touches and don't give the ball away cheaply. When you've got nothing left to lose, pile forward and don't let them breathe. We managed to get like 45% possession against Brazil that year and "only" lose 2-0
