Australia's Dirty Secret | Aborigines | Documentary | History

Australia's Dirty Secret - Exploring offenses practiced by popular media, big business, police forces and Governments helping the Australian 225 year campaign of genocide continue against Aboriginal Australians.
Australia's Dirty Secret (2013)
Director: Alan Lowery, John Pilger
Writers: John Pilger
Stars: John Pilger, Jon Altman, Pat Anderson
Genre: Documentary, History, News
Country: United Kingdom, Australia
Language: English
Also Known As: Utopia
Release Date: October 2013 (United Kingdom)
Synopsis:
An epic film in its production, scope and revelations, UTOPIA reveals that apartheid is deep within Australia's past and present and that Aboriginal people are still living in abject poverty and Third World conditions, with a low life expectancy and disproportionately high rate of deaths in police custody.
Reviews:
"A good documentary should derail your entire day, unless you had planned ahead to watch it, in which case you are one together human being. Enough fluff, this is a very good, and extraordinarily surprising story to see for a Canadian who already feels that human rights are not shared equally in this world. I was planning to sit around, and watch network crap until I just started watching this to see if I could watch it later, and I was immediately hooked. The first thing shown to you is a 70's era anchorman talking about the plan of sitting ministers to simply round up people for no reason, and move them away, then taint their drinking water to sterilize them in a "Humane" manner. Yes hooked I was, so I stayed to the end, and learned a lot that I thought I knew, but even I had thought that these things had stopped, and that things in "1st" world countries was getting better in how we were treating one another. Just shows how deluded we all are. I Enjoyed the no holds bared journalism from John Pilger, who has been trying to get people to pay attention to this issue for almost 30 years. Just because their ancestors roamed the land like the herds they followed does not mean they did not own it like all men(at least that is my take). If the act of observation changes the observed, then could not the aboriginal peoples say that by observing nature they shaped it?"

Great documentary. The minister of health of the Aboriginals also has an attitude. While they eat and live their best thes people and their generations are hungry, disadvantaged and left behind. Wickedness always starts from the top

I left high school in 2003 and was taught very little about the history of aborigines in my own country. I learnt more by working with and forming friendships with many aborigines in the min8ng industry. I used to fear aborigines because I grew up with parents in hospitality who had a lot of issues with aborigines but now I have a very strong admiration for their culture and who they are, very soulful and spiritual people with strong connection to country. I hope the younger generations realise how important their culture and customs are and learn them to carry them forward before this valuable information is lost.

It's not 100% accurate. Some of this is based on knowledge from propaganda information. It's hard to prove it's all true. So, to teach it in schools, parents can sue the education board for pushing propaganda. It may be all true. Who knows? But not all of it is proven

It simply isn't true that Australia has failed to invest in remote communities. There have been many instances of quality housing being provided, but the communities burn them down. These are a nomadic people who have spent millennia living outside under the stars, cooking over a camp fire and constantly on the move. They do not understand how to live in one place and don't necessarily value western ways. The problem is not one that can be solved by simply giving them houses, electricity, showers, toilets and stoves.

This is typical of Labor and the Liberals. They treat the Australian public like fools. Albo is worst. He is misleading Australian people with a vote based on ethnicity. Anyone can practically claim to be Aboriginal because the Liebor party made it is for people to this. The Uluru Statement of whatever it was is totally misleading. Many Aboriginal people did not support it but a select chosen number of people were involved. The Voice is totally dishonest because it fails to explain the implications of its implementation. It is vague. How can anyone come up with this nonsense?

Hi, this was made 2013 the nation has been going through truth telling for a while the genocidal history is compulsory in our education , hence the shift in the nations conscious, what started off with a few 1000 non Indigenous protesting has evolved into over a 100 000 marching each invasion day ( Australia Day)

  • @Factchekka

    @Factchekka

    9 ай бұрын

@@annanudniduck They are all brain-washed, mindless lemmings who have been indoctrinated over almost 40 years from a young age. The vast majority of Australians love celebrating Australia Day and have not voted for this to be changed. Every year in Perth 300'000+ people turn out for the Skyworks celebration until last year when the local council decides it is not going to do it any more. This isn't because of public opinion, it's a small number of people forcing others to conform to their minority view of the world. Question: Tell me, when you are marching in your protest rally, raging against the horrible outcomes of colonisation, do you ever think of the hypocrisy of doing that while you are wearing clothes and footwear, walking on a road between buildings, having driven there in you car, waving banners with written language on them, using public address systems that run on electricity, probably stopping off sometime during the day to buy instantly available food and water before using a flushing toilet to relieve yourself while recording everything on your mobile phone to share with the world on the internet to get validation? All of which you wouldn't be able to do if the culture that was here for tens of thousands of years continued into the present day unchanged. Just saying...

I went to a private school all through primary and remember well what we were taught in school about colonisation. For the lack of a better word..it was a white washed education when it came to indigenous Australia. As a child of a Maori father and a Samoan mother i can speak first hand at the effects of colonisation on an idigenous population. When i compare what happened In NZ, Samoa, and Australia i can't help but see the similarities but also the vast differences and i feel sad for the indigenous Australians, they by far have suffered the most at the hands of their colonisers. The commenter is clearly impressed with the documentary and found it to be very thought-provoking. They were surprised to learn that such atrocities were still being committed in "1st" world countries, and they enjoyed the no-holds-barred journalism of John Pilger. The commenter also makes an interesting point about the aboriginal peoples' relationship to the land, arguing that just because they did not own it in the same way that Europeans did does not mean that they did not have a right to it. I agree with the commenter that this is a very important documentary that everyone should see. It is a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights, and it shines a light on the dark side of colonialism. I also appreciate the way that the documentary challenges our assumptions about the relationship between humans and the land. It is a timely and important film that everyone should watch. Here are some additional thoughts on the documentary: The documentary is well-researched and well-made. Pilger does a great job of presenting the facts in a clear and concise way, and he also does a good job of weaving in personal stories to bring the issue to life. The documentary is very disturbing in some parts, but it is important to watch it because it shows the reality of what is happening to aboriginal peoples around the world. The documentary is also hopeful in some parts, as it shows the resilience of the aboriginal peoples and their determination to fight for their rights. Overall, I think this is a very important documentary that everyone should watch. It is a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights, and it shines a light on the dark side of colonialism.

Oh wow.... It's just mind blowing how cruel people (of all shades clothed in all kinds of excuses) can be over and over and unapologetically! One thing is clear though. The reason why even the greatest and most majestic ancient civilizations are now glorified in museums and history books is because we continue to fail to acknowledge that we all need each other. Humanity keeps making this mistake over and over... And over and over we will fall. We need to be one to progress perpetually.... . Why can't we just get it?

18:00 proud of the past - "the corregated tin was newer." We lived in West Aus couple of years 1981ish. At Cragie Senor High School there was a couple of Abos. And where they sat - there was a wide circle around them as they never washed. Pilger does lay on the kindygarten accent a bit thick. I was told by uncle of Abos being set up in a house - they made a camp fire in middle of lounge and were using bits of the house as wood- I was told this around 1979. But -I had a friend in NZ who said he was over in Aus and was destitute - and Abos such as those huts took him in and were good to him when he really needed it.

Im confused. They showed aboriginal people living in a shed, under trees and said this is how they live now? suggesting its not good? But compared to what- they have been living on the land thousands of years. No houses, no airconditioner, no power, no indoor shower or running water. They were nomads, moving around, living in huts, caves, animal skins, they were happy. So why did the reporter say it was sad to wash your child with a hose? Most aboriginal people don't shower or wash! They swim in the river, ocean. They always cook outside, they danced, hunted, shared stories, have inter regional and family wars, they stole women from their enemies, they were violent, the killed, ! Their culture doesn't get passed on because they have no rules, no elders telling the young ones what to do? Before white settlement they didn't have the langue, words for Science, Biology, architecture, progression happens everywhere with good and bad results. You cant just say all the bad points without the good, vice versa, you cant say all the good and omit the bad!
