My brother and I were in the Chicano movement in Milwaukee. It was a wonderful times!! The racist teachers we had stopped punishing us for speaking Spanish and would refuse to call on us when we knew the answers . All of a sudden TACO BELL CAME AROUND. THAN BECAUSE THEY WERE MAKING MONEY FROM OUR FOOD. IT WAS THAN ACCEPTED.

Thank you for this! Even now-a-days Chicano people from Austin are very unaware of the history. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping expand ours!

Aw man, come on, are you kidding? You're words are more likely to create division than unity. And right now, we need unity more than ever. I have heard of Chicano Park in San Diego and I would love to visit. You know why? Because of Chicano Park in Austin. If someone in Austin doesn't admit they are Mexican, they probably have had a negative experience. Austin is/was a difficult place to be Mexica. So you and your family should come visit us too. Maybe we could do an intercambio or something like that. And if you got a badazz ride, bring that too. Sending you good vibes primo. Take care.

If you are born in Mexico you are Mexican if you are of ONLY Mexican descent and born in the United States you are Chicano.💪🏼 I am proud of my Mexican culture and customs but I am also proud of my U.S. ( American ) culture and customs. People in Mexico do not accept us Chicanos as Mexicans and that is correct because we are NOT Mexican we are Chicano. To me to be Chicano is a thing of honor and pride. Chicano Pride & Power💪🏼 Born in El Paso Tx. and my family has been in Texas since the 1890’s. Raised in Dallas Tx. and proud to call myself a Chicano NOT a Mexican/Mexicano or Latino.

@@xavibustilloz779 Being Chicano is not something that comes automatically in your birth certificate. It’s an identity that you take on. There’s no such thing as American culture that’s white wash bs. According to the godfather of the Chicano studies. Chicano is person born in the USA or Mexico and raised in the states with a non Anglo American view of himself. Basically someone who doesn’t care to assimilate. That’s what makes a Chicano and not a pocho.! I’m from El Paso también. My family migrated there before the border was even up. We always call ourselves Mexicans because that’s my culture. And like many of our native cousins we don’t see ourselves as Americans. America come to us we didn’t come to America.

Associating “low riders” as Mexican culture is exactly one of the many reasons why the word “Chicano” is not widely accepted.

I´d like to add some thought to these stories; I grew up in San Antonio at the start of the 70's, from El Salvador, both my parents from El Salvador, with the difference that they were professionals, having made the great effort to study and get ahead, my father ended being the Dean for the Radiology Department at the University in San Antonio; I was the only Spanish speaker in my school, Lock Hill Elementary, and yet I never had these negative experiences; the teachers never saw down at me, and the only difference was that I spoke English at school, Spanish at home. And I liked to read. So I´ll leave this thought, maybe it’s more important the attitude than where you come from; sure, its hard, but its hard for many other people too.

Hope y'all are well! Thank you for sharing your experience. If I may ask, do y'all still call San Antonio/central Texas home. I meet many people that still call Texas home as 1st generations, but later moved to the Northeast/Midwest and stayed. Funny thing, many if not all, that called California home all ended up in Texas because of the economic opportunities that happened over the years for them. I am seeing many elderly from Latin and Asian Counties returning to their home lands as time goes. Take Care & Safe Travels!

Lmao girl please, Salvadorans are looked at worse than Mexicans, and only because Mexican American, chicanos fought for equality did you and other Latinos reap the benefits …also you need to realize as you’re not a native Texan, Austin and San Antonio are two entirely different beasts, I’m familiar with 1970s San Antonio and Texas in general…..SA was a hell of a lot more tolerant of Hispanics then and now! So I leave you with this thought…… unless your people , your alleged educated parents, and family were displaced on their own lands WITHOUT having to migrate to the USA where our people were discriminated against and more on their own lands, I’d suggest you open your eyes and look at the reality….we ran so you could walk! Know that in your self righteous ignorance ….if you’re parents were so educated why didn’t they go further up north where most real educated immigrants go?

@@catmejia6109 wow, your answer is full of intolerance and bigotry, so I will only tell you this: even my grand father, as a simple teacher, worked in Texas in the 40s, and because of his education, nobody could look down at him. We did live in northern New York and New Jersey, and it was always the same, you have to prove to yourself and to others your worth, no free rides. There is discrimination every where, even in Mexico if your indigenous you are discriminated. But it can be overcome, with education.

Which btw is extremely rare being from El Salvador at that time, I have family there so I’m very aware…San Antonio at the time your alleged educated family was there was NOT like Austin , WHICH this video is about…..this isn’t about your supposed educated privilege d family….Mexican Americans ran so people like you could walk…I know what it’s like in El Salvador in the era you’re alleging, perhaps you should come off your high horse because Austin was very different as it is today and the Mexican Americans were treated horribly, Salvadorans EVEN WORSE!
