In its current form, Nightingale combines the arduousness of the survival materials grind with the unsatisfying gear-score chase of an out-dated MMO. Coupled with poor combat and storytelling, Nightingale has an immense uphill battle ahead of it if it's to earn its place in the highly competitive survival scene.

    Agreed. I don't care who you are, tbh, because you didn't make Mass Effect. You didn't make Morrowind. You didn't make The Last of Us. You may be a talented (insert job), but you were still one often very small part of an often very large team that came together to make a grand whole. When you bring a new team together, that's an entirely new situation with an untested dynamic. Your skill in isolation doesn't mean nothing, but it does mean very little.

    @daaaah_whoosh

    I don't think gear score has a place anywhere, it's a lazy contrivance. But the 'survival' genre is definitely about personal growth, often through upgrading gear. And I'd say the 'survival' genre is more about surviving than exploring, though you are often pushed to explore either to find more diverse materials or because you've run out of resources close to home. Games like Breath of the Wild or early No Man's Sky were exploration games with survival elements, true survival games usually push you to create a home base and return to it often, limiting how much you can truly explore.

  • @sirfeni

    You say that, but as someone that loves exploring in games, the last thing I ever want is to be forced to grind resources & craft crappy gear, over & over again, for many hours. That doesn't encourage me to explore, it stops me stone cold dead, "Survival" genre is all about surviving & you usually never have enough time to explore properly. Enshrouded for example actively discourages ANY exploration by killing you on a very short damn timer, or even immediately if you turn left instead of right. You're to busy trying to SURVIVE, to explore.

    @@standylixgames7757 Personally I like the combat. Impacts feel weighty, all the weapons feel different, and it's really satisfying to get a heartshot. And our group hasn't even gotten to magic yet. But I guess that's mostly personal opinion. In terms of dungeons and enemy variety, I mean a lot of the dungeon layouts are pretty different, but mechanically they're too similar, that's true. Between the two enemy factions I've seen (not counting animals), there's like 7-ish enemy types I've encountered, and I know I haven't seen all. In terms of other inaccuracies. There is a loot all. You can rename storage. You can move items and destroy them in the build menu to get your resources back. I'm not sure how Austin missed that because it is just in the build menu. Granted, the game could do a better job of tutorializing but a reviewer missing fundamentals like that feels like poor due diligence. It did not take me and my friends long to figure any of that out.

  • @farli
    @farli4 ай бұрын

    One small correction for Austin - you don’t have to manually destroy buildings! On keyboard, X brings up the quick menu for repair and destroy. You pick Destroy, then can target what you want to remove. It then returns your resources! I do like a grind, but Nightingale definitely needs clearer guidelines, and pull from storage needs to be added for sure. There’s also a lack of Fae interaction - so far. More of these entities please! I will say, they’ve been very receptive to feedback and I’m hoping QOL updates in future will address some of the pain points. I hope Austin will review the game again in a year or so when early access is further along, I’ve really appreciated his review here.

    If I can give you a steer, Enshrouded was a really pleasant surprise for me, there’s a LOT to love there…and for 27€ it was an absolute steal. The building your own base mechanic is very satisfying, unleashing your inner child / Lego builder. The various biomes are beautifully realised and wonderfully different. It’s early access, but you’d be hard pressed to see that. Enshrouded was going to take me GOTY award (for pure innovation and aesthetics)…..but then Helldivers came along….

    I'm 60hrs in and my main thoughts/comments on this review as I follow: If they only did a better explaining a lot of the qol that IS in the game I feel the experience would be a lot better for people who aren't as inquisitive in figuring out that kinda stuff since he got so much wrong in this review that I figured out within my first few hours (hold e to grab all items nearbv, x engages build mode and you can reposition or delete anything youve built as well as quickly copy and make another, chests can be named by holding e on them). I actually quite enjoyed the augmentation system and had no problem getting all the bonuses and recipes, but there is also a minor realm card that remove's the placement requirements and massively boosts durability on all crafted tools and gear. Will agree the first gun did take too long to craft and felt like too much compounding tedium at once. Should state that recipes of equal tier are also unlocked when completing any of the random world events (which do increase in difficulty in the higher realms ex. 5 or 6 pillar tones to memorize the order for that are also hidde but 100% need more variety in their execution), and that doing a single fae portal will have you set for essence of the tier its at for quite a while (takes about 30min at most). You could have literally jumped over the gate and unlocked the next area still btw: gates are extremely easy to get around if you so wish and the gear score is mostly arbitrary so I havent thought about it at all and just look at stats. Those "Bosses" are just regular enemies placed as checks on your understanding of the basics: use bludgeoning instead of ranged as it gets decreased dmg making them look 500% tankier than they are but still agree they 100% need better AI or even just an actual boss type Bound enemy as when the game actually summons the full cast together the combat becomes quite enjoyable, obviously not game changing but better than I've seen in enshrouded with equal play time (mixes of fast rushers, slow heavy hitters, fire bois you wanna stay away from, and ranged miasma throwers you wanna shut up). 100% tho they need to add more variety and random effects to the realms you spawn as well as a major increase to the ai intelligence and a rebalancing of the "end game" to be properly threatening to warrant having other players around without ruining the combat experience

    There are 1 or 2 little things that I love about this game - the blueprint hologram building is really cool and you can load up you companion with tonnes of wood and stone and he'll put them into the building for you. The rest of the game is death by a thousand paper cuts and it's a real shame because it had so much potential. This is early access and I hope the devs see the feedback and improve the game.

    2 things that makes me crack a cheeky smile is that 1) You can tell that majority of this budget went to the art assets with dressing up the aesthetics of this game and 2) The UI is that bland generic monochromatic sterile template, there's no texture or whimsical font to it, just bland spreadsheet white against shaded black background.

    Yeah, the gear score thing is utterly bizarre, why take a system from looter shooters and just plunge into a genre that already does the same thing but in a much more organic way, Valheim did this beautifully using the biome bosses, once you defeat a biome boss you gain access to a tool that unlocks the technology that allows you to brave the next biome. That said there is literally nothing stopping you from going to the next biome any way, I'm still at biome 3 (the swamp) and only defeated the first two bosses (Meadows and Black Forest bosses) but I went to the next biomes (Plains and Ice Mountains) explored a little, got some materials and ran back to my base in the Dark Forest (several times, lots of deaths involved but I was having fun with how dangerous it felt to explore those areas), there is no "gear score" that stopped me from doing that, what a baffling choice!!!

    Not that it helps too much with the overall experience, but you can label containers by aiming at them and holding E then using the selection wheel for 'rename'. You'll then see the name by just looking at the container. I do wish these were external labels you can visibly see like small signs/labels physically on the containers so you can see them all at a glance.

I was enthralled by his writing, narration, and production values. It felt like everything he said in that review was coming directly from the heart, and that passion has permiated almost everything I have seen this channel produce since then. Seeing this channel grow, try new things, and introduce new people has been a pleasure. I may not have been an OG fan since the Division days, but as long as these guys continue to be themselves, I'll stick around. Now the real question looms, will we finally get that 2hr Outer Wilds review at 1M subs, Ralph? ;)

    13:19 Don't know when this was added, but you can label your containers and even your gates by holding the "E" key. This will bring up a menu to enter a new name. You can also auto-collect everything loose in a small radius by holding the "E" key, does work on logs and loose stone, but not rocks ("pebbles") or plants. To destroy buildings fast, you can use the build menu ("X) and press "V" to deconstruct those parts while getting all the resources back. 13:41 I totally agree, by far the worst part is that there is that T1 parts don't stack, because they are slightly different (stat wise) than other T1 parts that look identical but are e.g. either prey meat or predator meat. And not being able to search when searching through containers (the filtering is basically useless) and no crafting from containers is really awful in 2024. 15:24 That's why our new base does not look like a cosy cottage any more, but a structured modern warehouse. I hate it... Especially, since those augmentations also work against the build limit of 300 (whatever unit they use). 16:00 THIS! Also, that you can't queue the item (you can only pin the recipe to your journal) and then first have to craft all those other lower part components (which are listed in the in game glossary), physically transport those to another (augmented) station and so on. Really tedious in 2024. :( 21:35 This is why my male companion "Archie" now wears a dress (the one from the Twitch drop :D ). Because of an enormous boost to the gear score. I don't even care, because the friendly AI is even more stupid than all the modern Elder Scroll games. And that's quite a thing. 23:18 LOL. Same tactics I used for most of the bosses, I was slightly ill prepared for. :D I really hope there will be an overhaul to most of these things, but I guess some are far too deeply intertwined with the rest of the game systems.

I am 4k hrs into NMS, 3k into Valheim so not a noob but this game holds such promise, yet delivers so little in such a half assed way I am sad beyond belief. You hit the nail on the head regarding the crafting. Man, it's really bloated and goofy, the building limits which you didn't mention much of are 350 per realm and that includes everything but structure pieces which means with the augmentation system in place now, you're screwed. Well, time to go back in and spend another 5-6 hours killin the same stuff all over again. Sure hope Light No Fire comes out soon. This nonsense is painful. Again, thanks for this very well done review., really appreciate the time and effort you took. Can only pray the devs watch it and make some very needed changes. Travel safe.

    As far as crafting stacks by material lists go, Dwarf Fortress had that figured out clear back when I was in high-school.. then they just kept adding stuff. And adding stuff. And more stuff. And now, it's back to being a nightmare to navigate which of the 735 types of leather you want to use. Rhesus? Ox bull? Ox cow? Pangolin? Lemur? Another kind of lemur? Yet another kind of lemur? Boar? Sow? ...you see the problem. All this to say, it's probably a good solution if they're going to have, say, less than 15-20 potential sources per material. Much more than that, they're still going to need a more robust system in place there, because continually tacking more on is still going to bring a material -> source list to its knees eventually.

    While I 100% agree with Austin’s recommendation and assessment I would point out a few things: 1) There is a mass pick up, you just hold down E and it’ll hoover up all loose items in a fairly large radius 2) There is a way to deconstruct building parts without manually tearing them down or destroying them and you will get all your resources back. 3) You don’t have to build new crafting stations when you run out of augment slots because everything (other than actual building pieces) can be moved around. Is it still unwieldy and overly complicated? Absolutely. But you can just move them in and out of range to get the augments you want activated. Other than those few small points I’m in 100% agreement with his opinion here. It’s copy/paste procedural boredom once the initial intrigue wears off and you realize the grind at the heart of a gameplay loop. And ‘suddenly MMO’ is a dealbreaker if you’re a solo survival crafting fan like myself.
