I think we need to take a moment to appreciate how unique this song's arrangement is. First we get a full verse followed by a vocal breakdown, then a second verse, then a unique interlude that only happens once in the whole track, then we finally get the first chorus, then a third unique interlude that only happens once, then back to the first vocal breakdown, then a second chorus, then a unique outro section that only happens once, and then it ends on the verse hook. It's a very unrepetitive structure, with a lot to appreciate in terms of pacing and musical vocabulary. Good shit.

Fuck. "I refuse to die" is such a raw line especially with the way she sings it at first as if through almost gritted teeth.

somehow i'm convinced that with each song she creates, she blesses it with some kind of spell that is activated when someone listens to it. i feel like there are so many artists who would release a song like this and it would feel lacking soul or heart or intention in some capacity. but because of that piece of magic she imbues it with, it somehow feels just as magical as the soft folky songs she releases. i don't know how she does that. how does an 80s synthpop sound make me feel the same as a gospel church choir? it makes no sense

It's the blue tones. It's frequently used by Norwegian folk singers. It gives this otherworldly call that ensnares you in a way that we rarely see anymore. It's honestly fascinating and I highly recommend looking into Norweigan blue tones. I particularly like the video where a shepherdess calls her cows home with her singing!
