AURORA - northern lights 4K timelapse compilation & relaxation

Ever since I started chasing the aurora about 7 years ago in Denmark, I have had requests to make longer videos featuring only the aurora. It has now been more than two years since I established on the beautiful island of Senja in Arctic Norway, which is in my humble opinion the best place on Earth the experience and capture the phenomenon. I have been pointing all my cameras skywards for three consecutive aurora seasons. Every time there was a break in the clouds or with the guests of the aurora borealis observatory, I headed out in sometimes extreme conditions. The result is staggering and is well beyond what I was expecting when I first started chasing the lights on the island. I had been in Iceland, Canada or Sweden before but never was I able to get so much good footage so fast.
The main reason for that is because Senja island is located right in the middle of the auroral zone. Whenever a substorm quicks in, we are usually right below it. To some extent we see aurora every night but being around solar minimum, we see fewer big shows. So we have to make do with what we have. Still the past 3 years have delivered handsome as this compilation suggests. The goal here was to put together almost about 60% of my aurora footage in a 14-minute time-lapse compilation. I really want to show all the facets of this fascinating phenomenon from the simple arch on the northern horizon to the explosion of colors during a corona, not to mention the electric pulsating aurora.
The aurora is obviously not experienced in the same way in real life and on film. However both have their advantages and drawbacks. Nonetheless the secondary purpose of this video is to give the opportunity to stay at home and enjoy beautiful scenes of Arctic Norway while relaxing. You can either watch the video as it is or put it on your background screen a for your guests to enjoy. Many people requested this type of compilation, especially in these times of confinement, so here it is at long last! This video represents 72 sequences of about 300 photos each on average, so over 20K photos in total. It also represents countless hours of working in extreme environment taking the sequences, but also joy when the aurora exploded! It is also a way for me to celebrate my own achievement and to come back on three years of extra-ordinary experiences.
All was shot with the Sony a7s, a7rII and the Canon 6D astromodified and a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 500mm. For motion control I used the Syrp 3-axis Genie I system and also the Vixen Polarie. All post production was made in Lr with the special timelapse plus plugin, Sequence for mac, TLDF, and final production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. All content is of course copyrighted AMP&F (except sountrack licensed through Epidemic Music), and no footage can be used in any way without the author’s permission. Please contact me for media and purchase inquiry. Please share and comment if you liked the video and follow me for more videos like this one! More at nightlightsfilms.com.

While working one night in Deadhorse Alaska in 1975 I witnessed a display of the Aurora. It was sixty below zero that night. I was alone and sawing off the ends of dunnage beneath the pipe racks. In the distance was the Arctic Ocean. The lights looked like a giant theater curtains. They were in different colors, red, blue, and green. They moved slowly and gave off an eerie crackling sound like radio static. I had seen the Northern Lights before but never like this. It was a once in a lifetime display. I spent four years in the outfield but only once was it like this. It made the hair in my head stand up!

Las coronas son fascinantes, los reflejos en el agua, los fiordos.... tienes planos absolutamente increíbles. Y la intensidad de la música se conjuga con las imágenes de forma perfecta. Enhorabuena. It was my long cherished hope to have a view on Aurora Borealis, when it appears in impressive form. Your outstanding video recording has enabled me to see and appreciate how beautiful can an Aurora Borealis be when time, season and places are properly chosen. Also, your camera is highly capable to record accurate picture, as if, in original form. Addition of appreciate sound as background has given the view an extra dimension. My humble request to you, Dear Arden, if you please add a few lines on the causes of appearance of Aurora Borealis/Aurora Australis in nature it wil be more enjoyable to the viewers. Thank you and congratulate you on your success on preparing such an attractive natural scenario. From::::::Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
