I used to think this was a love song about being gentle to one another or losing your virginity with someone who genuinely loves you, but then I read exactly what Aurora meant and I was disturbed. I must have misheard some of the lyrics, or maybe it was the sweet accompaniment in the beginning, but it made me feel warm inside because I thought it was about trust and safety. Now that I understand it better, I think that my misconception actually adds to the art of the song, because many times abuse doesn’t look like abuse from the outside. It is hidden beneath deceptive sweetness and seductive lies. Lies that make you want to believe desperately that there’s nothing wrong with a situation. Now I understand, but I also have another interpretation; the process of healing with a new partner who genuinely cares about you and listens to your story. I hear the survivor recounting the traumatic events in the details that their brain hasn’t blocked out. It almost sounds like the male voices are supporting the survivor when Aurora asks, “Are your dreams as dead as they seem?” I hear the survivor being swallowed by their abuser’s voice at the end when the male voices overpower Aurora’s, making her fade away into silence, because many times the survivor remains silent. “Love is wild.” Trying to pretend that abuse is love. I hear the pain now. The eerie harmony feels like a burning tear in raw eyes. This song is a masterpiece.

As a victim of sexual abuse, this song holds a very special place in my heart, hearing it like THIS, amplifies the feeling of love I have for it

After years of nightmares, living next to him. Pretending nothing happened. It was like l was somewhere else in my head every time he came over. Years later I met him again. I had nightmares for a long time. I didn't think about it until I wrote this. He's not guiltless, but he didn't tell me to get over it like my Mom did. He broke down crying while I hugged him. I don't dream anymore, I don't think about it anymore. I've forgiven him. I moved on, I don't know if he ever will. He was my friend. I'm meeting someone for the first time in years. I don't know if I'll tell them. I'm alive, some days are better than others. Sometimes numb, sometimes not. To anyone who knows what it's like. Don't forgive, Don't forget. Unless you decide it's time. Dwelling on the past as cliche as it sounds, doesn't help anyone. Especially you. Whoever you are reading this. You matter.
