I'd seen iris' name floating around the Aurora universe for quite some time......but never actually checked out her music. And then I was listening to a podcast called 10 Songs That Made Me with Aurora as the guest. She chose 10 songs that meant a lot to her life....all were excellent choices. And one of them was iris - lavender and heaven. So I looked it up....and WOW. That song absolutely blew me away. The song title perfectly sums up the vibe. It's haunting and ethereal and romantic and moody and slightly dark. The music video also perfectly captures the vibe of the song. I then listened to a few other random tracks....and quite liked all of them. Wish I had given iris a chance much sooner....because she's very good. And anyone who likes Aurora....will almost certainly like iris. I definitely recommend starting with Lavender and Heaven. :)

Important to point out that the song was originally a folk song sung by slaves. A few post-civil war white musicians created a co-opted version, but the original song also continued to be passed down. So there are multiple streams and versions over time. I'd love to see a new version by AURORA and Iris, who could capture the sadness and explore the undertones of this folksong

@@strugglingcollegestudent Thank you for the historical link. Interesting how there are these layers to stories that are told and retold in folksongs. After following the link you posted about the song's history, I realized that the original song -- at least prior to the Civil War -- was sung by slaves (not by slave owners or white culture musicians) -- thus not initially racist. Rather, it appears to have its beginnings as a folksong about the experiences of those who sung it. But as it continued to be passed down from generation to generation, it spread and evolved within the collective unconscious, especially in the Deep South, and was in some cases co-opted by white musicians who added racist elements. Overtime the song spread widely with various versions of the lyrics. In the 1990's, the song was in a sense rediscovered and became a pop-cultural hit in Europe (without racist overtones). I think this song is best viewed with an understanding of its history, and could perhaps be reimagened (or reclaimed) as a black folksong, harking back to its true origins. Aurora appears to sense the sadness underlying the song, and mentions considering composing a sad version.
