LYRICS:
Long ago when I was just a lad
The other boys hated me, said I made them mad.
I guess I didn't fit in with the norm.
I'll never know why people are so desperate to conform.
Then I remembered something that you said.
Those 9 words of yours stuck inside my head.
You said "Prince Charming, ridicule is nothing to be scared of"
So I took it as a rule.
I slipped on my finest suit.
Shined up my pirate boots.
Put a medal on my lapel.
I thought of you and gave them hell.
We're captains all and we run this show
And we only sail where we want to go.
And we live at ease doing as we please
Like pirates drifting out at sea.
All of us have weathered through a storm.
You know they say what doesn't kill you often makes you better.
We live to tell and carry on.
After all, it's nothing but a touch of nasty weather.
Some of us are still around.
You're still the dandy highway man that they're too scared to mention.
And when you board you make us proud.
It's "Admiral on deck!" and we're standing at attention.
I slipped on my finest suit.
Shined up my pirate boots.
Put a medal on my lapel.
I thought of you and gave them hell.
We're captains all and we run this show
And we only sail where we want to go.
And we live at ease doing as we please
Like pirates drifting out at sea.
That's right we're captains all, we run this show
And we only sail where we want to go.
If you have orders, oh!
Keep them to yourself 'cause the only ones we follow are our own!
As for the ones whom we adore,
Those of our friends who still are lost out in the storm.
We raise a glass to you
And leave on a light or two
In case you ever make it home
There's always room on board because...

How I see this song: This in my opinion is a song about acceptance and understanding of a fellow person who suffers from bullying, depressiong and etc. The line ''As for the ones whom we adore, Those of our friends who still are lost out in the storm, We raise a glass to you And leave on a light or two In case you ever make it home There's always room on board because...'' kinda indicates how the ones who got out of suffering are trying to help or at least support the person who is still ''lost in the storm''. This is how I see it, and i think I am not far off. This song is beautiful.

Okay, when I first heard this song the only thing I could think of was how it described a character from one of my favorite book series. Jarlaxle Baenre from the Legend of Drizzt. Seriously, the lyrics just come off to me as something the guy would say and do when going off into adventure... even when he shouldn't.

This is what I like about most Voltaire (aside form his sense of humor and sarcasm in a lot of most of his songs) all his songs speak to people who don't fit in right telling them really not to care at all about what other people think or to wear your weirdness and be it with pride.

there was a version of this song that was on your sound cloud that i heard years and years ago when i was in high school. it was like a percussive version? the instrumental was mostly drums and the like, and i really loved how bright and cheery it was. I would often listen to it in the wintertime, early in the morning on the way to school and would sing it as i walked with big swinging steps. I loved to imagine running through a small fishing or trading town and catching a ship at the docks, how bright and blue the sky would be despite how chilly, crisp, and refreshing the sea air was. I was wondering, what happened to that version and would you ever post it again? I'd be super stoked if you did

I love this song Voltaire, and I love the sound of it all done up, but... I honestly preferred the song as just the drum and acoustic, like you have on soundcloud. It sounded more melancholic, and to me that's the way this song should be played, upbeat but with just the right of melancholy in the lyrics, as well as the feel of "you can't tell me what to do anymore." so I just have to ask.. would there be any way to get the Soundcloud version of this song?

Every song about pirates should sound like every other song about pirates? How dreadfully cliché and creatively limiting. This particular song is an homage to Adam Ant ( who's even quoted in the lyrics). He made alternative pop songs in the 80s while styling himself as something of a pirate. Perhaps that's why this homage sounds a bit like an alternative pop song from the 80s as opposed to a sea shanty. 🏴‍☠️

Cmon, believe your opinion. I never watched all episodes of One Piece(ended after 20 episodes- 2long4me), but this song surely fits the anime. Soon there will probably be AMV out there, like for When you're evil.

Shade Even though I haven't seen much of it as of yet, I personally think it would fit really well with One Piece!
