I'm originally from New York & moved to Boston!!- And I started over,best thing I've ever done!!! I never will forget this song or band ...I love Boston & absolutely love Augustana still in 2024

My Dad passed away this morning I'm sitting in a cafe with my fiance who will never be able to meet him now. This song is playing over the radio. I was, not as active in my Father's life, we lived on the other side of the country for most of my life. Far from him, and unable to regularly visit. He didn't have many friends and relied on me and my sisters for company via calls. I wish I'd taken more of those calls. I wish that I had picked up the phone last Saturday. Oh God how I wish. I miss you Dad, even more now because your voice is gone, your laugh, your booming presence. You were so goofy Dad. So good. I will always miss you. I love you Dad

I've had my own struggles in life, but always managed to talk myself back from the edge of the cliff. When I was 8 years old, my older sisters boyfriend taught me this song on piano. He started my true love and interest with music. In 2019 he lost his life in a car crash, now every time I hear this track I can’t help but appreciate how important of a person he was, not only for me, but for many others through his life. Hope he’s doing well up there.

Great song. But people are misinterpreting it. It does not sum up Boston. It's not about being from Boston and missing it. It's about someone getting out of the life they're used to and going somewhere new, where they can start fresh - no one knows his name, he can be someone new. I myself am feeling kind of the opposite; I'm from Boston and would love to move to California. This song is about anyone wanting to move and make a new life for himself.

I remember leaving home after high school, feeling so desperately that I wanted a fresh start, Away from the judgemental eyes of the people that used to know me.. that was 10 years ago, and while I didn't go to Boston, I went out and found places that felt like home, and people to love. born and raised in California at the end of a bad relationship and then this same came out. played it over and over daily and ended up in Florida instead. Boston was too cold. but this song. wow. magic. like real tears. the emotion and the songwriting reminds me of jackson browne. love it....

Where has the time gone? Just turned 30 but this was my jam hanging with friends in highschool when it came out. Hope they’re all doing good.

It's funny - this song is written from such a sad perspective, but whenever I listen to it, I hear it from the girl's perspective of starting over somewhere new and finding out what she wants. For me it always feels more empowering than sad.

Finally found the song Leonard was singing 😂

I played this song when I was 15 and my first boyfriend broke my heart on a school trip to Boston 8 years later I danced to a Augustana song with my husband as our first dance. I sang Augustana to my son when I carried him. Dan Layus autographed vinyl hangs in our first home. This song is what started it all. Thanks for breaking my heart 14 years ago dude.

This was so cringe...

One of the most meaningful songs I grew up listening to. "I think I need sunrise, I'm tired of sunsets" - such a beautifully painful metaphor for relationships, beautiful things, and people who come and leave. I think everyone has this same tragedy.

I figured he was just talking about east coast sunrise vs sunset on the west

So I actually did this a few years ago -- just up and moved thousands of miles away one day with very little planning or forethought, bringing nothing with me except a suitcase full of clothes. It actually is cool to have a reset and become a new person and get rid of all the baggage you had where you came from. You can't completely run away from your past, but overall, I would recommend it.

Yes, and if you notice his piano keeps getting drug in the ocean and he gets another one, hence their all floating out to sea, but he never stops, he gets another piano and keeps going..Thats life and you keep going, let nothing stop you. ❤

@ Angela Brezenski What a subtle and observant comeback to an equally great initial observation on sunsets and sunrises! I’ve never thought about that! In both cases! And you’re right! Florida has both a west coast and an east coast. And now that you make me think about it the same thing is true of the Cape in Massachusetts, and probably a few other places. His experience may not have been as profound, sentimental, and touching but at least moving expenses would’ve been a lot cheaper for Augustana had he lived in Florida, or some other land where the sun both sets and rises over the ocean or oceans on both its coasts. Lol! I love subtlety! Thanks!

Actually that’s not what it means at all. It means he or the implied person is tired of heartbreak and bad times in life hence a “sun set which leads to darkness”, and life filled with darkness. They want more “sun rises’s” which is a metaphor for light in your life equating to happiness and and purpose. It’s actually way deeper than you originally thought.

Nah man, this is a once in a generation song. It’s not like every song was like this when it was released. It’s not fair to judge todays average music against a timeless masterpiece

I dropped everything I was doing and drove away to start over somewhere new. Ended up traveling 3,000 miles, settling in NH 40 mins from Boston. So this song has extremely personal meaning to me.

i suppose there are times that we all want to run away from the present moment of life. i have contemplated moving to boston from california twice. of course from a broken heart, from disappointment or something -- maybe that sunrise would be inspiring. maybe no one knowing me would be interesting. not really sure. but i'm very sure that we all walk our individual story alone...... thanks Augustana.... very cool song that helps the heart.

This song reminds me of a time I don’t at all remember, but I remember the feeling well. I honestly don’t ever cry but a randomass tear fell down my face. Something sad something that was once beautiful, I wonder what happened.

This song makes me think of my younger brother, who moved to Boston to escape his Midwestern roots and be his true self... This song also reminds me that my brother and I have not lived in the same state for almost 17 years(sucks)... and this song also reminds me that no matter where you move...you can never really run from where you are from or your past ...
