An Essay on Man is a poem published by Alexander Pope in 1733-1734. It was dedicated to Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, (pronounced 'Bull-en-brook') hence the opening line: "Awake, St John...".[1][2][3] It is an effort to rationalize or rather "vindicate the ways of God to man" (l.16), a variation of John Milton's claim in the opening lines of Paradise Lost, that he will "justifie the wayes of God to men" (1.26).[4] It is concerned with the natural order God has decreed for man. Because man cannot know God's purposes, he cannot complain about his position in the great chain of being (ll.33-34) and must accept that "Whatever is, is right" (l.292), a theme that was satirized by Voltaire in Candide (1759).[5] More than any other work, it popularized optimistic philosophy throughout England and the rest of Europe.

Any essay on Man By Alexender Pope Home work by Idress Dev It is a poem in which Alexender Pope ponders on the nature of human and defends the ways of God where humans arise questions. There are four parts in the poem. 1. Of nature and state of man with respect to universe. In which he says that man can't judge with his own system as man is not perfect. 2. Of nature and state of man with respect to individual. In this part he says, man's bussiness is to study himself and to study his flaws not to judge the God and His flaws. 3. Of nature and state of man with respect to society. In this part he says universe is the single system. Reason and instincts make the individual good. 4. Of nature and state of man with respect to happiness. In this part he says that humans have the false ideas about happiness. Idress Dev.

“An Essay on Man” was published in 1734 and contained very deep and well thought out philosophical ideas. It is said that these ideas were partially influenced by his friend, Henry St. John Bolingbroke, who Pope addresses in the first line of Epistle I when he says, “Awake, my St. John!”(Pope 1)(World Biography 1) The purpose of the poem is to address the role of humans as part of the “Great Chain of Being.” In other words, it speaks of man as just one small part of an unfathomably complex universe. Pope urges us to learn from what is around us, what we can observe ourselves in nature, and to not pry into God’s business or question his ways; For everything that happens, both good and bad, happens for a reason. This idea is summed up in the very last lines of the poem when he says, “And, Spite of pride in erring reason’s spite, / One truth is clear, Whatever IS, is RIGHT.”(Pope 293-294) The poem is broken up into four epistles each of which is labeled as its own subcategory of the overall work. They are as follows: Epistle I - Of the Nature and State of Man, with Respect to the Universe Epistle II - Of the Nature and State of Man, with Respect to Himself, as an Individual Epistle III - Of the Nature and State of Man, with Respect to Society Epistle IV - Of the Nature and State of Man with Respect to Happiness

🎁 An essay on man by Alexander pope. Published in 1733-1734 (anonymously). Written in heroic couplats. On St John friend of (poet). Comprises four epistle. Pope did not admit Authorship1735 .🎁the first epistle is subtitled :of nature and state of man, with respect to the universe. Pope says that God's ways can not be under stand by humans. God has no special favorite person or creature. Every God's creation is a part of hierarchy where men are above luasts and birds but below angels. A deviation from this order of hierarchy disrupts the cosmus. The universe is ordered so perfectly and highly that humans can't understand. Everything in the universe fits in perfectly into God's purpose. Pope says that everything is right, everything is for the ultimate best and part of God's plan..
