EDIT: Please note that I made a mistake in this video - I mentioned that the Audubon Bird Call has been issued by the National Audubon Society. I received this information from a dealer, yet it turns out that this is not correct. The NAS reached out to me, kindly asking to clarify that their organisation is in no way connected to the manufacturer of this instrument. Hereby I am sharing their message with you. Sorry for the inconvenience caused by this mixup!
As the NAS is still working for a great cause, make sure to pay them a visit via www.audubon.org

I found this at a grocery store in Oregon for $7.99. I laughed, thinking that was an outrageous price for such a silly device. Then I happily paid for it and have been playing with it ever since. It does a great job of attracting birds and they will come and watch you and study you as you make sounds with it.

That's an awesome price you got there. Thanks for sharing your experience, it is a great tool indeed. :)
My daughter noticed that I like to try and imitate birds that whistle but I couldn't manage to do the ones that chirp. She gave me this Audubon Bird call for my birthday last week and I love it!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing your story with us 🙂
I got one for Christmas as a stocking stuffer. Whenever I go out on hikes and stuff with my husband (he's the one who loves all that), I always bring this. It's almost like the birds will follow you through the woods singing along. It's quite fun, I highly recommend. In the spring and fall, I'll put birdseed out and just sit on my back porch and play with this thing. Birds come up and look at me, and chirp back. I try my best to replicate their sounds with it. You want to get a birds attention? Well, it's this and bread, lol
I've had mine for 8 years and it's one of my favorite toys too! Sometimes squirrels are very curious about the sound too. No technique is really required, some animals are just really curious and will come near to see what's making the noise...

Hi Jason, thanks for your comment. I did not lure in any squirrels so far, weirdly enough. They only seem to go for the rations over here haha.
I have to say, I love my bird caller! It absolutely works and it’s amazing to see how many birds come to check out who’s making that sound. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Hannah, thanks for your comment. Can't agree more to what you're saying :)
I just found one of these while cleaning out a drawer at my parent's house. It was new in a blister pack and must been there for a few decades. I opened it and started making the most amazingly real bird sounds very quickly. I love birds and can't wait for the weather to warm up and try it outside, although it's addictive enough that I'm getting lots of practice inside. 😃
My favorite key chain. Don’t know if I’ve attracted too many birds with it but it definitely annoys my wife so worth it.

Hahaha well just watch out for slippers being thrown, head trauma is a serious injury. ;-)
when I was about 5 years old my father bought one of these and was very excited about it. while he was in the shower I took it out of the drawer and took out the capsule with spare resin. for some reason I decided to push on it to test if it would break, and sure enough, it broke and the powdered resin was lost. I felt sooooo bad about it. I'm 32 now and I just saw this device again for the first time, on a woodworking website. WOW!!! can't wait to receive and try it out!

@RathwulvenBushcraft

Hi and thanks for the comment. With a bit of practise, certain sounds can be emulated. But not every specific call of every bird. Where are you located?
Bought one for my dad who is now asking about the best way to renew the caller? He has a capsule of resin, he's just unsure how much to use etc.
@markussher5075

Just a pinheads worth. Dip the tip of a sharp knife in the resin and gather a little of the tip then tap it in between the metal and the wooden casing.

Hi, I've got one. Had it 30 years and it's been great! However I've just given it a wash and now the chirps gone! What sort of resin and where can I get some?
@donaldhamoy8030

Maybe try cornstarch or get some for a violin
@donaldhamoy8030

Idk where you are but you can find some tree sap
@RathwulvenBushcraft
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, thanks for your comment. Donald has a point with the cornstarch, but it poses issues when absorbing moisture. I haven't tried violin resin but I guess this is the better choice. Tree sap should not be used under any circumstance as both sap or resin will just stick and inhibit the movement. Hope that helps, otherwise you might want to ask your trusted outdoor shop - I know that dealers can get resin caps from the manufacturer.
@jasonmartin9530

It's my understanding that you can use the same as for a violin, a couple of bucks in a music store for a little block. You would just have to scrape some fine flakes off with a sharp knife and drop it in there? I still have some of the rosin dust that came with it 8 years ago!
Mine brought in some stray cats...guess I'll keep trying.

Could be, there was some misunderstanding between me and the Audubon society: I assumed, due to the information I got, that they produce those things themselves. Seems as if they just share the name but are not associated.
A glass and a wet cork will work better

In the US, Audubon societies view calling birds in as potentially unethical, for the reasons stated in the previous replies.
Do it and the cobra will find u😅

To subdivisions and open door one car garages everywhere (hair does not turn greasy): Do you think those are my values? Whether a bird... is what pokes holes in a parrot green bean bag chair in the office down the hall, spilling its beans everywhere? That's not going to be relevant to what millions of birds face in their own lives as problematic that we need to address on a first come bird feeder basis over eternity.
These things are great for calling small birds into shotgun range or if you hunt by falconry.
@RathwulvenBushcraft
