The LRB is Europe’s leading magazine of books and ideas. Published twice a month, it provides a space for some of the world’s best writers to explore a wide variety of subjects in exhilarating detail - from culture and politics to science and technology via history and philosophy. In the age of the long read, the LRB remains the pre-eminent exponent of the intellectual essay, admired around the world for its fearlessness, its range and its elegance.
As well as essays and book reviews each issue also contains poems, an exhibition review, ‘short cuts’, letters and a diary, and is available in print, online, and offline via our app. Subscribers enjoy unlimited access to almost 15,000 articles in our digital archive. Our website features a regular blog and a channel of audio and video content, including podcasts, author interviews and highlights from the events programme at the London Review Bookshop.
The London Review of Books was founded in 1979, during the year-long management lockout at the Times. In June that year, Frank Kermode wrote a piece in the Observer suggesting that a new magazine fill the space left by the temporary absence of the Times Literary Supplement. The first issue of the LRB, edited by Karl Miller, appeared four months later. It included pieces by Miller and Kermode, as well as John Bayley on William Golding and William Empson on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and poems by Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney.
Edited by Mary-Kay Wilmers since 1992, the LRB now has the largest circulation of any magazine of its kind in Europe (2017 ABC: 74,157) and offices in London and New York.

so nice to know. really presumptuous of me to just suppose he only appeals to an English audience. there are some wonderful clips here on youtube of a programme he did called A Night In With Alan Bennett (something like that) where he's picking all the old TV clips he grew up with that influenced his writing and talking about them, completely worth a watch

Mini Mc I must admit that I'm surprised that someone so quirkily English (and northern English, at that) has even made an impact in Texas. I had always assumed that Bennett - like cricket - didn't travel well.

4dorno I do so agree, what a national treasure. I used to buy all his diaries on CDs. What a brilliant discovery to find all this on you tube. I was once lucky enough to glimpse him near his cottage in Yorkshire . I was rooted to the spot and would have loved to have had the confidence to have spoken to him to tell him how much I admired and appreciated him.

His father's lifelong dislike of sport as a result of a cricket bat being taken back by the photographer at a sitting had me chuckling . Alan Bennett is indeed a national treasure , even though it's a term he cannot abide .

@Steve Sandford ... a great man that many should appreciate for more than linguistic skills and humour. He's an absolute delight. Maybe I'm a little biased coming from a Lancs/Yorkshire family, but I doubt it. Beyond beautiful. There is a Spanish word for this that we don't have in English, and that is duende.

Quite a long while ago I was a domestic in the home of a movie mogul. Aneswering the doorbell one afternoon I was surprized to seeTyrone Power standing there. I had not been warned so awestruck led him to the living room. Of course, I later put it together that it had been the son of Mr. Power and Linda Christian. Shortly after that I was let go for having had a quickie in the beach house with Peter Lawfords brother, a dead ringer for his sibling. I was very young.
