JUST LIKE THAT (MASTER)
THE HOLY GRAIL OF ALL UNRELEASED ABBA TRACKS
THE MOST MYTHOLOGISED RECORDING
"And they [Benny & Björn] said the verse and the chorus don't fit. And i said, 'What do you mean? They fit together perfectly' It's an incredible great tune - It's a hit!"
MICHAEL B. TRETOW, CIRCA 1994
(Carl Magnus Palm, "The Complete Recording Sessions")
"I remember it as a very good song and recording. I don't recall why they decided not to release it. A pity! But maybe it's going to be released one day."
AGNETHA FÄLTSKOG, 1983.

JUST LIKE THAT.
THE SAME ORIGINAL RECORDING WITH SAME VOCAL TAKE,
AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE MIX.
4 MAY 1982 / EARLY ROUGH MIX :
First stage of production, consisting of the recording of the working basic backing-track with vocals, without overdubs. This mix is often mistakenly called the "slow version".
17-19 MAY 1982 / EARLY ROUGH MIX + GUIDE-VOCAL OVERDUB :
This step consists of recording an additional vocal-track on the basic EARLY ROUGHT MIX recording. This is a guide-vocal overdub by Agnetha who guides saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft (to indicate the parts where he should play). This mix is often mistakenly called the "na-na-na version".
24-28 MAY 1982 / MASTER :
This final step consists of recording overdubs including Raphael Ravenscroft's saxophone. The mix is made on 28 may 1982. This mix is the Master. This mix is often mistakenly called the "saxophone version".
1983 :
Benny Andersson tries an alternate instrumental version with working title "When The Waves Roll Out To Sea".

In 2010, Carl Magnus Palm wrote : “the tapes […] started circulating among collectors when Björn’s car was stolen […] - this story has sometimes been presented as a ‘rumour’, but Björn confirmed to me that it did indeed happen. I also understand that one or two tracks may have been given in good faith to friends by people within the ABBA camp, or to people at the many record companies that released their music around the world. Inadvertently or not, these tapes have since ended up on bootlegs.”
The tape containing “Just Like That” have since ended up on bootlegs. Unfortunately, the first copy from the cassette containing the Master (also called “Final Mix”) seem to have been made forgetting to activate the Dobly-B filter when playing the original tape (we notice the very characteristic sound imprint that we usually have when this error is made). All the copies which subsequently circulated kept this bad range of frequencies (totally altered by the initial error), and the cassettes used for copies could not absorb these frequencies without the sound being very damaged.
By the end of the 80s you could find bootleg-cassettes and vinyl-records. Later, in 1990-1997, the parallel/bootleg market had "Just Like That" on CDs (all manufactured in Italy). Italy was in the 90’s a great producer of rarities, they released real manufactured CDs including beautiful booklets (it seems that controls were non-existent in this country at that time). Even if some CDs seem to offer better generation sources, everything that was released in the pre-internet era came from the same source (i totally exclude everything that is circulating on the Internet today, because those sources are all doubtful).

Typical ABBA sound (song) from 80's,saxaphone is "in".Great remastering. 🎤👏🎵❤🎼🎷🥰
Best version landed on the internet. We're blessed that somebody took time to work on this. thank you Philippe! By the way, if "Just like that" is the holy grail of the unreleased tracks, as a bibliophile I have to say that "The Complete Recording Sessions" is the holy grail of books about ABBA!
Oh Abba just release this brilliant pop song, its one of the best things you recorded close to The Day Before you Came ❤
This is probably as close as we would have got to the actual finnished ABBA track had they released it in 1982. I love the late Raphael Ravenscroft saxophone playing on this and it remains a big omission from the ABBA catalogue. This remix is definately as good as it gets, until B&B finally agree to release it.
It is really a shame Benny & Björn regarded this as "not good enough" and refuse to release this ABBA's masterpiece!!!

Well that's them all over. There's a list that goes On And On And On so to speak! Here we go: 'Free As A Bumbleebee', 'Rikky Rick'N'Roller', 'Burning My Bridges', 'Get On The Carousel', 'Hamlet III', 'Rubber Ball Man' or 'Under My Sun' (whichever's the better if ever finalised), 'Giving A Little More', and of course this gem, and in doing so they take no account of the fans do they, especially when all they want to do is relax, never make any more records and just rend their own catalogue for tacky, vile musicals that actually TAINT ABBA and embarrass and horrify it, to say nothing of what it does to us. Consider the above and how annoyingly wrong they get things-they make 'Rikky R' then decide it's too weak to release, yet feel content to rip important parts of music out of it to make a bloody instrumental and put THAT on the album in place of a song-which is somehow, to them, even more satisfying, but can only ever disappoint me-I want WORDS, SINGING with the music, not just the music. That can be an added vanity piece at the end or elsewhere in the album, which we can skip if he want, but at least put Ricky R' on there. With 'Get On The Carousel' it's even worse, they'd already intended that as the 4th and final piece to the "Mini-Musical" on side 2 of 1977's LP, so they must have known how it would turn out-why even then make it intentionally to then leave off the album. It doesn't matter that it's structure is repetitive-so's many things and it's SUPPOSED to be, but there's repetitive and downright simplistic and turgid basic-think S/A/W or slagdonna, and then there's 'Get On The Carousel' and it's ridiculous they left it off-yes it has a 'live' sound and that's the point. They make sure they use a live version of 'I Wonder (Departure)' as a B-side, yet that was already ON the album, just not live. So at least put 'GOTC' then! Defeated your own argument, B&B. Their reasoning for 'Just Like That' to stay away from us is equally puerile and pathetic, and kind of repugnant to us when they know we'd go mad for it. I mean several other things they griped and dismissed for ages they've FINALLY saw release of sorts: 'Put On Your White Sombrero', 'I Am The City' and 'Dream World' are 3 of the starriest examples. They even gave us 'Happy Hawaii' yonks ago, instead of dumping it offhand, and finished off the other 'Just' title, even though that seemed a lost cause to many. But oh no, too much trouble with 'Just Like That'-they'd rather give us a step-by-step paste 'n' strip job of a song already ON "The Visitors" then this song that should have been on there with all the other 5 from the 1982 sessions uncompleted. They're such jerks.
Agnetha the first second and 3rd voice on this ! Magic .
What a shame that they missed it out in their "Voyage" album...would have been an invaluable gift to all the fans

No. It’s completed and remastered. In 1994 while compiling the TYFTM boxset they finished it and it was going to be included in the boxset but at the last moment they changed their minds. Instead they allowed a snippet to be included in the Undeleted medley. You could tell it had progressed far beyond the demo stage. Their reluctance to release it is strange as I think it’s a brilliant song.

@@MarioDruet No, they were trying to get it on 2 albums, but weren't satisfied with the quality of the mix. They like it fine. But then ABBA broke up, and B&B sold the song, so it's not theirs to release anymore. What are you talking about they didn't like it?!?! If they didn't like it, they wouldn't have done like 10 mixes of the thing trying to get it album-ready.

@@anthonygrice That's not complete, they are all studio floor cuts. They sold the song and cannot release it. It HAD passed beyond demo, they were trying to get it on two albums, but were not happy with the mix. That's normal, it happens to all albums, and more songs than are ever released on album.
Das ist ABBA,dieses Lied ist für mich eines, der schönsten Hits, die sie je hatten ❤
No idea why people say Frida has no vocals on 'Just Like That' you can clearly hear Frida in the chorus

Great remastering!
In my opinion, this song should’ve been on their recent Voyage album, not “Just A Notion”. “Just Like That” is more complex, melodic, and interesting than “Just A Notion”. Even Agnetha herself really liked this song.

I'm glad it isn't, because then Benny would have reworked the song and turned a wonderful recording into a BAO song, like he did with Just A Notion. The original 1982 mix of Just Like That should be released, without changing anything!

Will you also remaster the version without the saxophone? (I swear as I look more & more about this song & try to find a good remaster I realize I'm the only one that likes the "Slow/Silent Version)
I know Benny is going to please us
This is such a brilliant song.
