Audi Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro: One of the best all-rounders in the SUV market

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A high performance hybrid SUV
The Audi Q5 is one of the best all-rounders in the SUV market. But does adding a plug-in hybrid system improve it or just add extra weight and expense? Rebecca Jackson finds out in this CarGurus UK review of the Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro S line Competition.
Written review: www.cargurus.co.uk/research/A...
Pros
Quiet and comfortable
Quattro four-wheel-drive models cope well with bad weather
Plug-in hybrids make great company cars
Cons
Not as fun to drive as a BMW X3 or Porsche Macan
Looks may be too subtle for some
A premium badge means a premium price, whether you are buying new or used

I received my Q5 TFSI E Vorsprung Competition 4 weeks ago and I have to agree with pretty much every point in this review so well done. I would like to add that yes the real-world electric range is between 20-25 miles, but on a £60 tank of premium fuel, I drove 750 miles! I have a Pod-Point 7KW charger at home which completes a full charge in 2 hrs so just topping up the car whenever it's on the drive is easy. I think what people don't realise is although the real-world range is not great, whenever the car is stationary the engine is off, when you pull away (even with no charge) the electric motor still moves you away before the engine comes in providing excellent efficiency. The drivetrain on this car is superb - even on the motorway when using the petrol engine, the electric motor picks up some of the torque and variance, so when motorway cruising the engine is pegged at 2,000 RPM and the electric motor is providing additional power where necessary to reduce fuel. The hybrid drivetrain on this car is superb, the way the car helps you drive by pushing back on the gas pedal and automatically slowing to recoup energy when you approach bends or junctions is excellent. There is a lot of intelligence behind this system which until you drive it over a period of time you cannot appreciate just how clever it is and how it all works together to provide some amazing cost savings.

Just taken delivery of one and Audi were doing crazy discounts. Got mine for £44,000 and it is amazing. 31 miles of charge if you don’t switch the air con on. Don’t need the charging cables in the boot as only charging at home so boot issue sorted. The silence of the engine is the best with a hint of space age waft. Great review Rebecca

I’ve just ordered mine with a bit of extra kit and I got a similar price. Totally agree with you comments re:charging. Having owned a diesel Q5 for four years I wouldn’t go back to that. This car feels miles lighter than my current Q5.

I don't see the point of these plug in hybrid vehicles. I prefer self charging hybrids like the Toyota prius or many others like that. Why not just buy a full on electric vehicle its green and it has a good range. Then the icing on the cake is for these plug in hybrids is you have to charge them up for 2 or 3 hours and you get 30 miles if your lucky absolutely pointless.

I think the main advantage is it serves two purposes: short trips (groceries, commuting to work, etc) and longer road trips. We have a Tesla model 3 and just took our first road trip over the battery range. Charge times we’re about 45mins at a super charger. The battery range was reduced by about 30% from rated capacity because we had skis on top, the temp was cold, and we had four people in the car. So, we had to charge every 200 miles. That was inconvenient and the anxiety goes way up when trying to make it to the next super charger. Overall, the Model 3 is much better environmentally, but long road trips are a challenge.

  • @djdoomy

Losing time with charging is bad but electric cars are better than hybrids? Funny. At least with a hybrid you do not depend on charging points for long trips as you would with a fully electric car. Many countries do not have enough charging points so you cannot really use electric cars for long trips.

26 miles of electric range wont be enough "for many people to cover a large proportion of their driving" as you state it - that would mean going to and from work (or just using it for shopping) if you live in a city - but then why would you buy such a large/expensive vehicle if you are mostly going to cover such small distance in a crowded city? colossal waste of money better spent on buying a small city electric car and still having enough money to buy a second larger vehicle for everything else..

@@fug33 There are lots of people in the San Francisco area that live in apartments and have good salaries (150k+ USD). Parking spaces can easily cost 400 USD a month. A cheap electric car has about a 200 USD month lease. Plus insurance etc, at that point you will be paying more to drive a less luxurious electric car around all the time. Cities/Areas like SF bay area is where these will sell like hot cakes.
