Article Version: www.cleanerwatt.com/articles/...
The first US deliveries of Audi’s more affordable all-electric SUV the 2022 Q4 E-TRON should be happening soon - With a starting price of just under $44K USD (before $7,500 federal tax credit) this SUV has a lot to like - but just how does it compare to the EXTREMELY POPULAR Tesla Model Y - and is the MODEL Y worth the extra cost?
NOTE: Towing numbers quoted in this video are the MAXIMUM AMOUNT, but the ACTUAL TOWING CAPACITY will vary based on a number of factors. For example, although the Model Y is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, the actual towing capacity varies all the way down to 0 lbs and up to 3,500 lbs based on tires and numbers of passengers - see Tesla Model Y owner’s manual for more information. Softer suspension, better cruise control - only the part for keeping and adjusting your speed according to speed signs, curves ahead and such and tighter turning circle. If you like it the Skoda has the nicer, more homely, more cozy interior. Much like in a real lodge in the woods or a lounge in a high rise instead of the cool modern Tesla look. Also MS 2014 was free charging but any new tesla charge about 25p per kW. This is similar to non super charge chargers in the UK. My main problem was that when I first had my Tesla, there was no model 3 so always free charger. Now many popular chargers always busy and full. Also there are about 50 miles between superchargers here in the uk. Now with q4 I would need dc chargers which are literally everywhere. I won't have to drive outside my planned journey, just pop into a service station and charge whilst going for a pee.

First of all, I think you’d rather compare the Tesla Model 3 to the Audi Q4 etron. And then, because of the body style, it should be the Q4 etron Sportsback. It has less air drag (like the Tesla) which has a huge influence on energy consumption (less) and range (more). On top, the pricing gets them closer. In Europe these days, the most popular “offspring” of the new Volkswagen MEB platform is the Škoda Enyaq. No idea if they offer this in the US. But to the understanding of German car buyers, it’s the better car for less money than the Audi Q4 etron or the Volkswagen ID 4. By now there is no fastback version of the Enyaq available, still the air drag coefficient of the SUV-style body is way better than the one of any of its siblings (less air drag, more range!). What has to be said is, Tesla has an edge over most of the other battery car producers (BEV) by battery technology, lightweight design, superchargers and the navigation software. The only cars that have caught up to Tesla so far are the new Mercedes-Benz EQS and the already introduced EQE (not yet available). In some fields, they have even overtaken Tesla (e.g. active suspension, additional rear wheel steering, head-up display, just to name a few). And at least in Europe, most of the cars are available with LED matrix lights (don’t know why the US have banned this feature, it makes driving at night so much safer). One thing, talking about top speed in a US video sounds a little strange to me since I wonder where do you want to go to drive these speeds? Are US drivers really able to drive top speeds of 160 mph +? Would other drivers be aware of you driving that fast? How would the cops react? Sure, this is possible in Germany in some cases (Autobahn with little traffic, no speed limit at the particular road, enough energy on board), but German BEVs are usually limited in top speed because the impact on range is so dramatic (double the speed = four times the consumption, makes absolutely sense). Regarding the acceleration, I wonder if people can handle that rocket behaviour of the car in real traffic… . It needs a lot of experience and estimation skills to do this in a safe style (space, other driver’s behaviour and perception of your driving style, …), so you better don’t do it as long as you aren’t absolutely sure. But, thanks for the interesting report anyway.

From a vehicle production point of view the key question is what margin is Audi making per vehicle produced? That interior looks expensive to manufacture, especially compared to the minimalist Model Y dashboard and interior. On another note, I think everyone knows that there is a new federal tax credit arrangement being worked out in Congress as we speak that will make the Model Y eligible for the $7500 reduction as well. It might be worth holding out for the deal to pass before buying.

I ordered a Q4 (Europe). First of all, the price difference is much bigger here. Second, and that is more important even: Tesla has really bad after sale service (maybe only in Europe), I have a friend with an S model and it took months to get a repair on his car (it is not the only case I heard off either). As for the tesla chargers, it is an advantage especially in the US, but in Europe where there is a big push for green tech the alternatives are growing very fast. Now that France is also jumping on electric cars, I am no longer too anxious to take one on a longer drive during summer/winter holidays.

Compared to some previous vehicles you have chosen, even the top-of-the-line Prestige version is dirt cheap. I personally would prefer this to either the Model 3 or the Model Y. Oh. And the Audi still qualifies for the $7,500 tax credit, even if the proposed extension and expansion of the tax credit to save GM, Ford and the UAW doesn't pass. I could even see myself getting this instead of the Model S LR I have on order. The downside, of course, is range and charging network." I've had 5 Teslas so far. Loved the two Model S. Had too many unfavorable aspects to the Roadster and the two Model 3.

Sounds like your better off with the Model Y. It sounds like the Audi has a bigger battery but achieving similar range specs compared to the Tesla. What that sound like to me is the Tesla Model Y is more efficient than the Audi. So yes, pay more for a more efficient car that has a cleaner and less busy interior, faster acceleration, access to the best charging network on the planet and retains more of its overall value. Sounds like an easy choice even if you're factoring in the tax credit. Mind you, you might not qualify for the full $7,500 since it will be based on your tax liability.

Both the Audi and the Tesla are remarkable vehicles. Tesla has giga factories in Germany, China, and the USA while Audi does not yet have equal capacity. Audi is saddled with legacy internal combustion Tesla is all electric. I suspect that given the cash burn in this industry it will be difficult if not impossible for all of the legacy auto manufactures to survive. We will see bankruptcy and auto tech evolve and only the strong will survive. Tesla is vertically integrated, others are not, causing consolidation industry wide. My guess is that the electric auto will morph into a integrated system connected to your place of residence, charged by solar on your roof top, placed on the electrical grid, able to fully provide 100% electrical home backup.

Lastly, you failed to mention a $7500+ federal tax credit may come back to tesla with new proposal being worked out in congress. you are trying too hard to be "fair" and not highlighting the strengths of the model Y. the Y is so much more fun to drive and with autopilot/FSD it will be practically better in what matters most

Two things. 1. Although the video explained how inappropriate it is to compare EPA est range between different makes, the video still continued to use it as a measure to give Tesla an advantage. For eg: I don't understand why the video used miles added per charging based on EPA range and making some conclusion. At least the test results from KZreadrs should have been used. Both cars won't be far off if done that way. It was very unfair. 2. An important point with Audi would be how they will list the prices on yearly maintenance cost. The original E-tron had some prepaid maintenance plans as costly as their ICE cars. If Audi does it the same way, that won't look good.

For years the Germans went on and on about how their spartan interiors were more classically spartan. This went on for Decades. German manufactures constantly panned the more luxurious American Cars over their German contemporaries. I think the Japanese Luxury cars made them change their game. It is funny to see the tables being turned. I am not sure 36000 is truly an affordable vehicle.
