AUDI Adaptive Light Defective, VCDS Error 02629, A4/A6/A8/S4/S6/S8; 2.0t, 3.2, 4.2, 5.2 V10

A common error on the Audi A4/A6/A8/S4/S6/S8 (2005 to 2010ish): Adaptive Light Defective Error. From VCDS, 02629 - Sensor for Swivel Module Position. The dash error shows a symbol of a headlamp with a left turn arrow on it. That's how you know it is specially a Swivel Module Position issue (Left and Right). This function turns the HID projector headlamps in unison with the steering wheel, somewhere around a minimum of 20 mph. The error is caused by #1 Broken wires inside the headlamp from the swivel sensor to the swivel motor, because of a factory design flaw of not having enough slack on the black wires (my video) #2 A broken wire, at either of the headlamp harness plugs #3 Corrosion at either of the headlamp harness plugs #4 Corroded or mouse chewed wires from the fuse panel to the headlamp harness #5 Widened prongs on the main headlamp plugs, or "socket" if you will (female side), because of being connected and disconnected so many times.

Thank you, I just bought an Audi A6 and it came with this problem. I am hoping the dealer will pay for it. I bought the car online and had it shipped, I so wanted to give this dealer a 5 star rating because I love the car, but I have had to do things that should never leave a dealership without being done. Thanks for your help with this video.

I know this is an older video but I thought I would pass on some info. My 2006 A8 had the exact problem. I went I had and took everything out. I fixed the broken wire and test it quickly and it worked so I end up cutting all the wires and adding a little bit of length. I did it in both sides. For some reason from talking to people it seems like the driver side is the one that everybody has the most problem with. Excellent video good information. I always go back and look and see if someone has come up with a better system that's how I came upon your video. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. And you are absolutely right about how much it would cost to replace that light. And the dealership will not fix the wire they will charge you for a brand new light. My friends 2008 was quoted $1,800 and that's why he asked if I could look at his. Again it was the driver side and the exact same wires were broken. So I fixed it is like I did mine

Fixed mine today. all of the wires were cracking and frayed. Lots of shrinkwrap and liquid tape. I had to cut the bottom out of the housing with a vibrating multitool to get to the broken wire. It was on the position sensor. Glued it back with superglue and some plastic welding. use a flashlight to make sure you have it sealed up tight.

Issue is inside headlight. Inside of the headlight are a dozen black thin wires.Under the influence of the cornering light system, the insulation of these wires is rubbed.Damages only in places where the wires are fixed with plastic fasteners. In these places, the wires rub against these stripes. Finally, there are short circuits between these wires. This can be repaired by insulating all the wires.Unfortunately, access is very difficult and sometimes the wires are damaged in several places.Usually you need to remove the lampshade from the lamp to gain access to all damage.

I tested the draw with a mili amp reader and ended up pulling out the 10 steering col. Switch module and it dropped from 7 or 8 to 0.02 but I think think it started with the adaptive light issue.

Thank you AZK303. Unfortunately it will need coding done to remove the error from your dash, after installing the non-AFS headlamps. Also, even with the error and current headlights, someone with extensive VCDS experience could disable that feature even now.... But that coding is a skill- might be hard to find that person.

If it isn't a broken wire I will consider a junk yard replacement for the complete headlight.

I've swapped electronics from right to left - error stays with the right headlamp. Matt grab your other headlights and sit down with one in your lap, open the cover and use a flashlight to inspect the swivel motor wires inside, very close. If you see a crack in the insulation, you NEED to strip the insulation away and look for copper strands of wire to be broken. Just because you tried 2 more assemblies doesn't mean the wires are fine. The HID inside those causes so much heat, i have seen 7 assemblies so far that look the same. Also do your best to check the hardness off the car, to see if there are any frays on the wires leading up to the headlamp harness. If you have ever had any mice evidence under the hood, you never know where there could be a fray from a bite in the wires. Also check every single fuse related to the headlights for corrosion on the tabs after you pull it out of it's place.

izzy sorry about the wait on this reply. Yes you would still get the error since it's programmed into your ECU that the car has the headlamps with that feature (when it was built). It takes advanced coding knowledge to know how to disable it. Some vehicles it's not as hard, like on my F150, i was able to download freeware from the web, buy the right blue tooth OBD2 dongle, and get into the ECU coding to disable the double horn honk F150's make when leaving the keys inside the truck and walking away from the vehicle, keep the fogs on when putting the high beams on, enable perpendicular parking when it's not allowed in the US, little things like that. I have the VCDS software for Audi/VW but i just don't have the coding knowledge to disable certain things except- turn side marker lights off, or enable the DVD while in motion, window control from the key fob, minor things like that.

The power sun roof in the car is malfunctioning but I have read a TSB that says the fix is to recalibrate the motors. The TSB gives the proceedure. Any other advice or things to look for?

It is not easy to repair. You need to peel off the lampshade which is very difficult. Then you need to check every single wire if there is no damaged insulation. Most used lamps will have the same damage. Because it is a factory defect. The new lamp costs about 800-1000 $.

Shane Broussard Shane I fixed one last year, I had it for a couple weeks. Some of the O2 sensors can't be replaced without pulling the engine, no joke. My friend had one that he was sold with a slowly leaking air shock, and he didn't know until the next day after he had already bought it because it took overnight for it to deflate. Rebuilt they are $1650/ea. It had so many other issues that I couldn't offer more than $6,000 for it from him. Front crank seal was leaking, the alternator is water cooled and his was failing, the self closing doors stopped working in the rear, just one of the most expensive cars to own. I am an Audi enthusiasts through and through and that poor car was just one thing after another. I would not buy one of these with real miles on it, it's just a time bomb. Such a gorgeous car and I love big cars, but if you won't be doing all the work yourself just be prepared for Audi to be the only one that can do it. There's so many recalibrations that only the dealer can do like the sunroof issue you're talking about. My Ross Tech diagnostic software is great for Audi and Volkswagen but it can't do everything. I would get the C6.5 S6 instead (2011+), same engine.

Tonight I was going out after dark and noticed that my headlights go up and down on start up before the ding then the warning light comes on, but to make it even stranger is when I turned a corner you can actually see the headlights turning with the steering wheel, why would I be getting the warning light?

  • @MidknightMechanics

Tom- on such a newer model, who's headlights are working properly as you described, there's definitely something more complicated going on, like a bad headlight control module (computer) or an aftermarket headlight put in place of a factory headlight, or a bulb replacement gone bad where they stretched a wire, or pinched something that caused a short. I would pay Audi to run a diagnostic. Feel free to reach back out to me after you do. Or go online and order yourself a ross-tech vag-com cable, like I have.

Nope. That error is only for the swivel motor for your low beam. If you have a turn signal or cornering light that is out, only a VAG-COM software (running on a PC) would show you the error that the light is out or won't power on.

Hey Kamil. That means the motor that turns your projector headlight when you go around corners is being hung up inside the housing, or malfunctioning in a wiring/electronic way. You'll have to pull the headlight out of the car, take the back cover off and look inside for issues or moisture. Or just replace the headlight (expensive).

Riccardo unfortunately you'll need to scan the car with a good OBD2 reader. Some of them won't tell you which side is faulty, but others provide more detail. I use Ross-Tech when it comes to VW/Audi products. I think even my SnapOn scan tool probably wouldn't be able to tell me which side. Since the bumper has to come off to remove them, you could just check both headlights for the issue my video describes.

Steve is your Tiguan a SEL? There are level sensors on the lower control arms, on a VW it will probably only be on the front, and only on one side, not both. It will be black plastic and have a little arm going to it. So if this sensor senses the control arm is moving up or down, it will automatically adjust the headlamps so you aren't blinding people on the other side of the road. Or, if you are going down a STEEP hill or road, it will make sure the car adjusts your projectors UP, so you won't outrun your headlamps. Get on the ground and make sure your level sensor on the lower control arm is still connected, or unplug the sensor, blow out the connector and plug it back in. It's possible yours could just be junk since it is very close to the ground and all the weather and nasty stuff that our cars run over on a daily basis. By the way- if your Tiguan doesn't have projector headlamps, (that is the style that looks like a half-sphere of glass inside your headlamp and usually an HID bulb)- it will not have this level sensor, but the fact that you have that error on the dash would mean that you do have them= check that sensor.

Gerry check things like voltage coming out of the alternator, should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Then have the battery tested- try and find the date stamp of when it was made. Older than 5-6 years, replace it. You have a voltage problem or a short somewhere. Make sure you don't have water damage with wet carpets from a poorly done windshield replacement or something of that sort.

Rob that's the thousand dollar question. I lean towards no, but with all the advanced programming that VCDS can do- there must be a way, right?. But since it's dangerous if you don't know the specifics of programming/adaptation, you'll have to find someone with the details who has done it before. Maybe email someone, like Ross-Tech.

This does not exist above the B6 chassis. I'd like to see you find a fuse chart with the description for just the adaptive function on an Audi, 2005 or newer..

That link you sent- was for a B6. Like i said, that fuse no longer exists for a 2005.5 and up (B7 or newer), or C6 A6/S6 and newer.

Faris Bsoul And I'm sure it was on an older model being D2 or older, correct? They got rid of that fuse later in the model line.

nicktech360 actually i have A8 D3 2005. I am just waiting my cable to arrive to check what is the code. Honestly, am not familiar with the fuse design after 2005 models. I believe you know better than me :).
